Asia Video Metrosexual (Hong Kong Version)
₱ 425.00
YesAsia
Yongyoot Thongkongtoon, director of the hilarious The Iron Ladies series, again plays with gay themes to offer an amusing film titled Metrosexual. A box-office topper in Bangkok, the movie can be enjoyed by gay and straight people alike. The story starts with young woman Pang announcing her marriage to Kong, a man who seems too good to be true - well-attired, stylish, skilled in cooking, knowledgeable about delicate cuisine, sensitive towards people's emotion. All these qualities seem to have disappeared from straight guys nowadays. Pang's four best friends therefore suspect that Pang's fiance is a closeted gay who is getting married just to disguise himself. In their meetings, resembling those of the four women in Sex and the City, the four cosmopolitan Thai women come up with all kinds of imaginative and even weird methods to test whether Kong is gay or just Metrosexual. The film may not be politically correct, but it certainly provides great entertainment with non-stop jokes!

The giver, the recipient, the occasion: every present holds a story. Presents - Aikagi is the first in a series of films based on Kakuta Mitsuyo's short story collection revolving around the theme of presents. Starring popular young actress Hirosue Ryoko (Wasabi) and rising star Tamayama Tetsuji (Heaven's Bookstore), Presents - Aikagi is the debut film from director Hyuga Asako, who previously wrote the screenplay for Way of Blue Sky. Aikagi means "spare key" in Japanese, and this film presents a story of love and remembrance. Even if the owner of the key has left, the memories remain. Yukari (Hirosue Ryoko) and Hiroaki (Tamayama Tetsuji) have been together for eight years. Though they are both constantly busy with work and do not see each other often, Yukari believes that they will always be together. Just before Christmas, the couple finally has a chance to meet up, but Hiroaki tells her that he has found someone else and breaks up with her. The next day, a heartbroken Yukari cuts short her hair. When she sees Hiroaki's spare key, all the past memories come rushing back. Yukari decides to give him one last present.

Asia Video Koizora (VCD) (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version)
₱ 400.00
YesAsia
Though "based on a mobile phone novel" may not sound like a ringing endorsement, one would have to be in Japan to understand the phenomenal popularity of Koizora (a.k.a. Sky of Love). Penned by an anonymous writer who claims the controversial heartwrenching story to be her own experience, Koizora sold over ten million downloaded copies in its first year alone, and went on to sell in the millions in published form. The story inspired a manga, spin-off stories, and now a feature film starring Japan's latest it-girl, Aragaki Yui. Already a popular model and TV actress, Aragaki made the leap to stardom in a big way in 2007 with both her feature film and J-pop debuts. Her performances in Koizora, Koisuru Madori, and Waruboro have already garnered her Best New Performer honors at the 50th Blue Ribbon Awards. Equally fair-featured teen heartthrob Miura Haruma from Catch a Wave and 14 Year Old Mother and rising actor Koide Keisuke (Kisaragi) star opposite Aragaki in this pure love youth melodrama. At the helm is popular television director Imai Natsuki (Orange Days), making her feature film debut. Koizora largely succeeds through its touching story and photogenic young leads whose onscreen chemistry may charm the most jaded of viewers. Aragaki and Miura star as high school sweethearts Mika and Hiro. Wide-eyed girl-next door Mika falls head over heels into first love when she meets bleached-hair delinquent Hiro. But love forces them to grow up too early as they face grave trials and tragedies together.

Asia Video Babel (Hong Kong Version)
₱ 575.00

Directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Golden Globe Best Picture Babel spans three continents and four languages to present an emotionally compelling account of intertwined lives and heartbreaking miscommunication. The cast includes such great stars as Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, who portray an American couple stuck in a Moroccan village. The alienation between husband and wife in the beginning and the mistrust among members of the Moroccan tour are ironically posing greater difficulties in communications than the language barrier. At the same time, two Morrocan brothers and the couple's Mexican nanny never expect to pay a huge price for just some apparently frivolous mistakes. On the other side of the world, a Japanese girl, deaf and mute, choose to communicate with others in ways that many people find too eccentric to accept. After the well-made 21 Grams, Inarritu now offers another thought-provoking piece that will satisfy movie-lovers looking for an inspiring title.

Asia Video Lump Of Sugar (Hong Kong Version)
₱ 400.00
YesAsia
If dogs are man's best friends, then, according to Im Soo Jung's (A Tale of Two Sisters) latest melodrama Lump Sugar, horses are woman's best friends. The career of director Lee Hwan Kyung (not to be confused with the writer of Yeon Gaesomun and Emperor Wang Gun) certainly defies expectations. After working as assistant for acclaimed directors like Lee Myung Se and Park Jong Won in films like Rainbow Trout, Lee opted for the less economically rewarding but safer road of TV producer at MBC. A couple of years later, he was back in cinema, directing the romcom He Was Cool with Song Seung Hun and Jung Da Bin. Lee Hwan Kyung now presents his second film, Lump Sugar, which earned both success at the box office and good reviews, especially for Im Soo Jung's (and the horse!) performance. Growing up alongside her horse CheondungI, motherless Si Eun (Im Soo Jung) builds an increasingly strong bond with the animal. They don't need words to communicate, just gestures, eye contact, and trust in each other both on and off the racing field. One day the horse is sold, and Si Eun's life seems to stop in its tracks. Two years later, Si Eun is striving for her dream of becoming a successful jockey when she meets an old friend on the field.

Asia Video Sparkling Red Star (VCD) (Hong Kong Version)

Adapted from renowned writer Li Xintian's same-titled novel, animated film Sparkling Red Star is a heartwarming, colorful, and patriotic children's story set in 1930s China. Naked Ambition and Love on the Rocks director Lam Chiu Yin makes a rather significant departure from his previous works to present the big adventures of a little comrade. Growing up in a time of chaos, carefree village boy Dongzi greatly admires his brave Red Army soldier father and the Red Guards who have protected his village from the evil landlord. When Dongzi's father leaves for the Long March, he gives a sparkling red star to his son. This red star becomes Dongzi's protector in the subsequent years as he encounters numerous hardships and slowly comes of age during the changing tides of wartime China. The Cantonese version of Sparkling Red Star features the voices of Gillian Chung and Charlene Choi of Twins, Kenny Kwan, Mandy Chiang, Sun Boy'z, Louise Lee, Law Ka Ying, and Tsui Siu Ming. The Mandarin version is voiced by Super Girl Xu Fei, Jiang Wenli, and Zhu Xinyun, who starred in the 1974 live-action film adaptation of Sparkling Red Star.

Asia Video Bandage (VCD) (Hong Kong Version)

No stranger to the depiction of music in film, Love Letter and All About Lily Chou-Chou director Iwai Shunji co-wrote and produced Bandage, a drama about the Japanese music world. Originally a radio drama written by Iwai and author Kan Chika (who also wrote the novel), the film marks the directorial debut of Iwai's longtime music producer Kobayashi Takeshi, who also produced the music in the film. Also making his film debut is KAT-TUN's Akanishi Jin, who plays the charismatic lead singer of a rock band during the 90s band boom. The heart of the story, however, lies in Asako, the devoted manager of the band played by rising actress/singer Kitano Kii (who also starred in the Iwai-produced Halfway). With its great creative team and hot young stars, Bandage was one of the most anticipated Japanese youth films of 2010, breaking the film studio's record for the number of advance tickets sold for a live-action film. One day, high school student Asako (Kitano Kii) is invited to go to a concert by indie band Lands. Almost immediately, she falls in love with both the band and its lead singer Natsu (Akanishi Jin). By chance, she becomes the band's manager, and she quickly discovers how little glamour there is working in the music business, despite becoming friends with Natsu. When the band decides to leave artistic integrity behind for fame, will Asako's loyalty to the band - and Natsu - be compromised?

Asia Video Fear Of Intimacy
₱ 350.00
YesAsia
Independent filmmaker Vincent Chui made his first feature film Leaving in Sorrow a few years ago, starring Shawn Yue who was not as famous back then, and in 2004 he finished another film Fear of Intimacy. The film appears to be a genre film yet its portrayal of a loving relationship encompasses a depth of feelings that is seldom found in mainstream movies. Though an independent production, its cast is never a weak one with award-winning Tony Leung Ka Fai, Michelle Saram from Skyline Cruisers, Taiwanese model-actress Stephenie Lim, and handsome new actor Cheung Wing Hong. Fai (Tony Leung), once a successful photojournalist, now makes a living as a paparazzi to take pictures of celebrities and expose their scandals. A new photographer (Michelle Saram), admiring him, works with him in following a rich lady. The target's mysterious death draws them into investigation, in which Fai's memory of his girlfriend who vanished in the thin air 5 years ago keeps haunting him... The film was launched at the Hong Kong International Film Festival in early 2004 but its commercial release did not take place until 2005. Now the film is also available on DVD and VCD for those who have missed the theatrical release in Hong Kong. Also selected as a competition entry for the 26th Moscow International Film Festival and as the Closing Film for the 6th Taipei Film Festival. Click to see the official site of Fear of Intimacy.

Asia Video Last Life InThe Universe (Hong Kong Version)
₱ 400.00
YesAsia
Am I the Last Life In The Universe? The answer seems no to Kenji (Asano Tadanobu). He at least has Noi (Sinitta Boonyasak) with him - just for a while. Death connects as well as disconnects the characters - it is a motif that keeps haunting the movie from start to finish. Kenji, a Japanese Liberian living in Bangkok, is addicted to suicidal attempts. A series of killing brings him to a mysterious Thai prostitute named Noi. She is almost his antithesis in terms of character and personality, but the only intersection of their lives - the deep sorrow and solitude they are in - is enough to tie their fates together to spin an extraordinary tale... Even without a common language to communicate, they are destined to share some incredible but melancholic experiences in their lives. Thai filmmaker Pen-ek Ratanaruang is emerging as a world class director recently. This time he has Christopher Doyle (2046, In the Mood for Love) as his cinematographer and Japanese superstar Asano Tadanobu (Ichi the Killer, Zatoichi) to feature in his Last Life In The Universe. This film has been sweeping awards ceremonies and selected for numerous film festivals. Apart from the twelve awards obtained locally in Thailand, the film was also an official Oscar Submission (Foreign Language Film) in 2004 and Asano Tadanobu was awarded Best Actor in the Upstream Category in the 2003 Venice Film Festival.

Japanese writer-director Kurosawa Kiyoshi made his international breakthrough in 1997 with the acclaimed psychological thriller Cure. Renowned for his horror titles, the director has a knack for getting under the skin and into the mind with deep, unsettling films that challenge the boundaries of the genre. A decade after Cure, Kurosawa teams up with producer Ichise Taka (Ring, Ju-On) and again actor Yakusho Koji, the star of Cure and 2003's Doppelganger, for Sakebi (Retribution). Like Cure, Sakebi stars Yakusho as a weathered detective who begins to lose himself in a serial murder investigation, bringing up perplexing questions of self, memory, and the fragility and perils of the human mind. From there, Kurosawa takes the film to even more startling and disturbing places, soberly exploring the darkness that brings people together. Besides the classic pairing of Kurosawa and Yakusho, the film also features the remarkable supporting cast of Odagiri Joe (Yureru), Ihara Tsuyoshi (Letters from Iwo Jima), Konishi Manami (Udon), and Kase Ryo (Nice no Mori). Detective Yoshioka (Yakusho Koji) is in charge of a serial murder case, and in the course of investigation, he discovers his own fingerprints and personal effects at a murder scene. As more and more clues point to him, Yoshioka tries hard to make sense of the situation, but it's as if a cloud hangs over his mind and pieces of his life are missing in darkness. His relationship with his longtime girlfriend Harue (Konishi Manami) feels empty and distant, and his partner Miyaji (Ihara Tsuyoshi) is starting to suspect him. Unsure if he can even trust himself, Yoshioka goes to police psychiatrist Takagi (Odagiri Joe) for help, but the therapy can't seem to clear his mind of shadows and spectres. Is Yoshioka actually hunting himself?

Fearful and unable to leave his house since his mother's untimely death, a heartbroken, emotionally devastated twelve year old named Satoru (Kanata Hongo) withdraws himself from all contact with the outside world. However, this situation changes slightly when a technological marvel is built for him, a state-of-the-art robot nicknamed Hinokio! With the help of his robot doppelganger, Satoru is able to take the first tentative steps to reconnecting with the world around him, sending Hinokio to grade school in his stead. During this daring experiment, Satoru is able to befriend a tomboy named Jun (Tabe Mikano) with the help of his robotic stand-in. But even if he connects with Jun, is he still not alone, isolated in his bedroom? Soon enough, this relationship impels Satoru to attempt to experience the world in a more direct manner, but not by coming out of the house. Instead, he activates the robot's "sensations," a decision that puts young Takashi in mortal jeopardy. Back home, there is also the strained relationship between father and son for Takashi to deal with. Satoru's dad Kaoru (Masatoshi Nakamura) tries his best to reach out to his son, but Satoru still blames him for his mother's death. Thus, communication between the two is sparse at best. Yet through the vehicle of Hinokio, the two may finally have a chance at reconciliation. Will Satoru trade all his newfound virtual relationships for real ones or will he remain petrified with fear? Featuring appearances by Kobayashi Ryoko and Horikita Maki, Hinokio is a poignant film that asks the hard questions about what it really means to be alive.

Legendary Japanese director Ichikawa Kon's 1976 film The Inugami Family, a.k.a. Inugamike no Ichizoku, holds a very special place in Japan's long tradition of supernatural suspense. Based on Yokomizo Seishi's epic work, the slow-burning family murder mystery is a highly influential title in the director's celebrated filmography and just about required viewing for Japanese cinema fans. In 2006, the 91-year-old auteur returned to the director's chair for what would be his last film to remake his own most representative work, updating the classic film for contemporary audiences. An uncannily faithful remake of the original film, the unsettling The Inugamis (a.k.a. Murder of the Inugami Clan) delves into a tangled web of murderous lies and deceptions that is tearing apart a wealthy multi-generation family. Ishizaka Koji, who also featured in the original Inugami Family, leads the all-star cast as the famous detective Kindaichi Kosuke. When tycoon Inugami Sahei (Nakadai Tatsuya) passes away, he unexpectedly leaves the family fortune to outsider Tamayo (Matsushima Nanako, Ring) on the condition that she marry one of the Inugami grandsons - Sukekiyo (Onoe Kikunosuke, 47 Ronin), Suketake (Katsurayama Shingo), or Suketomo (Ikeuchi Mansaku) - pitting blood against blood. Soon afterwards, members of the family begin to turn up dead, one by one. Detective Kindaichi Kosuke (Ishizaka Koji) is called in to investigate the murders, and the truth is slowly revealed as he happens upon years of hidden skeletons and a shocking family secret.

Multi-talented Mathias Woo (who co-wrote the screenplay for the Louis Koo movie Happy Birthday) and Edward Lam have earned their reputation in making high art more accessible to the general audience by mixing talk shows, stand-up comedies, musicals, and dramas into innovative stage performances. Their Eat, Money, Man, Woman and The Importance of Being Vulgar in 2002 explored some characteristics of Hong Kong people that may or may not be virtues. Independent singer/actor Cedric Chan (a member of the music group Gayamyan), drama actor Yeung Wing Tak, plus other veterans in Hong Kong's art scene dug out the implications of Hong Kong people's everyday activities. From commuting by train to chilling out in pubs, from having fun in Karaoke to stirring up office politics, they all demonstrated how absurd life in Hong Kong is capable of! Mizuki Shigeru's popular manga series Gegege no Kitaro traveled to the silver screen in 2007 with a blockbuster live-action adaptation that pulled over 2.3 billion yen (US$25 million) at the box office. Unsurprisingly, the sequel Gegege no Kitaro 2 - Sennen Noroi Uta (a.k.a. Kitaro and the Millennium Curse), again directed by Motoki Katsuhide, followed quickly in 2008, set in the same fanciful world populated by yokai, demon spirits with supernatural powers. Wentz Eiji of WaT reprises his role as half-human, half-yokai hero Kitaro, who takes it upon himself to resolve the problems that arise when human and yokai collide in modern-day Japan. While the first installment of Gegege no Kitaro was an action fantasy family film for all ages, the sequel appeals even more to older audiences with darker themes and storyline, and the same visually stunning array of fantastic creatures and special effects. This time Kitaro and his friends are investigating a series of mysterious disappearances. They stumble upon a yokai conspiracy and a cursed cycle that dates back 1000 years. Tanaka Rena (Giniro no Season) and Oizumi Yo (After School) return as Kitaro's yokai buddies, along with new additions like Terajima Shinobu (Vibrator), Sano Shiro (The Glorious Team Batista), singer Nakagawa Shoko, late veteran actor Ogata Ken in his final film appearance, and teen actress Kitano Kii (Kofuku na Shokutaku), stepping in as the new heroine.

Asia Video Dorm (Hong Kong Version)

Thai filmmakers seem to be particularly fond of ghost films, but Dorm stands apart from the rest. One of the directors of 2003 box office hit My Girl, Songyos Sugmakanan goes solo for his second film, reuniting with child actor Charlie Trairat for the decidedly uncommon Dorm. Though marketed as a horror, Dorm escapes easy categorization. The beautiful color-drained photography, gray institutional set design, and eerie music and visuals are effectively creepy and moody, bringing plenty of scares as the story unfolds. The film, however, does more than just frighten. Revolving around a young boy's uneasy boarding school experience, Dorm is as much a coming-of-age story about friendship, forgiveness, and facing fears far greater than ghosts. Unceremoniously sent to boarding school by his parents, 12-year-old Chatree (Charlie Trairat) has trouble adjusting to dorm life. The school is run by a creepy, emotionally disturbed headmistress (Jintara Sukapat), and the other boys aren't interested in making friends. Instead, they torture Chatree with tales of ghosts haunting the hallways, one of which seems to be menacing him. Things start to look up for Chatree when he finally finds a friend in Wichien (Sirarath Jianthavom), but Wichien turns out to be no ordinary boy.

Directed by Ochiai Masayuki, Infection, a.k.a. Kansen, is a supernatural sci-fi thriller produced by J-horror champion Ichise Takashige, the man behind such films as Ju-on, Ring, and Sakebi. Ochiai previously directed the murder suspense film Hynopsis and sci-fi horror Parasite Eve before taking on Infection in 2004, and the film reflects his talent for genre blending and sharp visuals. Starring Sano Shiro, Sato Koichi, and Takashima Masanobu, this chilling film is set in a run-down, under-funded, dimly lit hospital where health care has gone to the pits. Creepy, tired, and incompetent, the doctors and nurses neglect patients and practice medicine carelessly. When their actions lead to the death of a patient, the hospital decides to cover up the incident. Shortly afterwards, a man with a strange, green-oozing disease shows up. He mysteriously disappears, leaving behind his sickness and soon the infection begins to spread, afflicting the staff members one by one.

While the first short film, Presents - Aikagi starring Hirosue Ryoko, was a quiet drama about heartbreak and remembrance, Uni Senbei is a colorful romantic comedy featuring rising stars Toda Erika from Death Note: The Last Name and Hiraoka Yuta from Swing Girls. Music video director Ishii Takahide brings a vibrant pop sensibility to his debut feature, creating a lighthearted confection about romance and growing up. An OL (office lady) at a stationery manufacturer, Hazuki (Toda Erika) is less than enamoured with this whole working thing. Sawajiri Erika and Yagira Yuya represent the future of Japanese cinema. Since winning the Japan Academy Award's Best New Actor award for her role in Pacchigi!, Sawajiri has starred in a number of films, and emerged as one of the most popular young actresses in Japan. As for Yagira Yuya, though only 16 years old, he has already received world cinema's greatest accolade, becoming the Cannes Film Festival's youngest ever Best Actor winner in 2004 for his quietly arresting performance in Kore-eda Hirokazu's Nobody Knows. Lauded as his first go at an adult role, Sugar & Spice Fumi Zekka is both a coming-of-age film and a testament of Yagira's own coming of age as an actor. Recently graduated from high school, 17-year-old Shiro (Yagira Yuya) decides to put off college and work at a gas station instead. Shy and introspective, Shiro understands he is at a turning point in his life, but is unsure of what lies ahead. Though his parents disapprove of his decision, he has the support of his flower-child grandmother (Natsuki Mari) who declares that a gas station is a romantic place for life's drifters. Surely enough, soon a new co-worker, college student Noriko (Sawajiri Erika), drifts into Shiro's life. He falls headfirst into a bittersweet first love that ushers him into the world of adulthood. Based on a popular Amy Yamada novel, Sugar & Spice is director Nakae Isamu's sophomore feature. It has been five years since his last film, the beautifully shot Calmi Cuori Appassionati starring Kelly Chen and Takenouchi Yutaka. While Calmi Cuori Appassionati was set in Florence, his new film takes the same delicate cinematography and lingering sentiments to simpler times and places. Set in a military base town on the outskirts of Tokyo, the film moves at an earnest, unhurried pace, capturing both the Sugar & Spice of first love and fleeting youth.

From the director of Made in Hong Kong and Hollywood Hong Kong comes Public Toilet, an uncommon film about who we are, what we dream, and what we all have to do two times a day. Director Fruit Chan's seventh film is a wandering metaphorical journey that follows various protagonists from various locales (China, Korea, New York and India) as they cross the globe in search of magical cures for their terminally ill beloveds. However, despite their unifying goals, each individual finds different obstacles and trials, and each still finds themselves visiting that most unavoidable of locales: the public toilet. In Fruit Chan's satiric, darkly funny, and subtly poetic universe, people visit public toilets to live and die, and maybe even find a beautiful Korean sea creature that feeds on human waste (!).Public Toilet was a winner at the Venice Film Festival, and a selection at various others, and features an international cast of unknowns and fan favorites, including Hong Kong's Sam Lee (Made in Hong Kong) and Korea's Jang Hyuck (Volcano High).

It's a Shaw Brothers flashback as the legendary Lau Kar Leung directs and stars in Drunken Monkey, a 2003 action film with old-school kung-fu charms! Lau Kar Leung stars as Man Biu, master of the Monkey Fist, and its alcohol-influenced variation, the Drunken Monkey Fist. But his own brother betrays him with the help of some unsavory villains, and Man Biu is left for dead. Luckily he survives, and is nursed back to health by Siu Man (Shannon Yao). Meanwhile, Man Biu is sought after by a couple of young fans, Ka Yip (Lau King Win) and Tak (TV star Jacky Ng King), who find the old man, but discover that he simply wants to be left alone. That desire is denied when Inspector Hung Yat Fu (Shaw Brothers legend Gordon Lau) comes calling. Eventually, the news of Man Biu's survival is bound to reach his foes, and it'll be up to Man Biu, Tak, Ka Yip, Siu Man, and the power of the Drunken Monkey Fist to make things right! Former Shaw Brothers stars Lau Kar Leung and Gordon Lau make a welcome return, and Lau Kar Leung serves up his exciting trademark action choreography. In an age of romantic comedies and teen popstar vehicles, Drunken Monkey is a refreshing blast from the past!
