Performance

Performance is another word for the processing capacity of your laptop. This is dependent on the physical hardware that powers your device. There are four main key specifications that determine your laptop’s performance:

1. RAM (or Random Access Memory) is the amount of temporary memory your laptop has to store data. The larger the memory, the faster the laptop can switch in between programs, the smoother user experience, and the faster your programs will be able to run. When buying a laptop our advice is to get a minimum of 4GB RAM. But if you can, opt for 8GB or 16GB. High-end gaming laptops and workstations can go as high as 32GB and 64GB.

2. CPU (or Central Processing Unit) is the “brain” of your computer responsible for executing tasks/programs. Its speed determines how fast you can run a program or render an image. There are many different CPU specifications. Below is a quick guide on what processors are recommended for different laptop classes:

3. GPU (or Graphics Processing Unit) is a specialized processor designed to handle the image processing of your laptop. It also serves as the extra muscle to your CPU. A good GPU allows your laptop to process high-intensive graphic applications such as rendering 3D models or high-spec gaming.

There are two main GPU providers, each with its own pros and cons:

Both Nvidia and AMD are also providers for OEM (original equipment manufacturer) GPU products. EVGA, Gigabyte, and PNY use GPUs from Nvidia while Gigabyte uses GPUs from AMD. These OEM brands are fairly popular, especially in the mid-range and low-end classes.

If high-end graphics are not required, a CPU with an integrated GPU chip (where the GPU is built into the CPU) is sufficient. Since there is no separate hardware, the GPU will not be able to use a separate memory bank for graphics or video. As such, your laptop may not be able to run graphic-intensive games.

4. Internal storage describes how much data your laptop can store. Whilst RAM storage is for short periods of time (and will be erased when you switch your computer off) information stored in internal storage will be kept even if your computer is switched off. For gaming and productivity workstations, we recommend at least 500GB to 1TB storage or higher. For Chromebooks and light users, a basic 128GB would be a good choice. We recommend an SSD (solid-state drives) for laptops since they run 3-times faster, and are less clunkier, than hard disk drives. If you need more storage, you can always get an external hard drive.

Screen

A laptop screen size is diagonal distance between the top left and bottom right corners of the screen (not including the bezels). Laptop screens can range from as small as 11-inchers to as large as 18 inches. Smaller screens are great for portability and a great fit for people who are always on the go. Larger screens are better for gaming or workstation system. For a good balance in portability and performance, go for a 13 - 14 inch screen.

Another factor you should consider when it comes to laptop screens are its bezels. Bezels are the black edges on the screen, the smaller the bezels the larger the screen for your laptop size. The amount of space given up to the Bezel is often measured using screen-to-body ratio. Laptops typically have a screen-to-body ratio of 80 to 85%. Newer designs can be as high as 95%.

When it comes to laptop screen selection, especially when choosing a gaming laptop, also check out the Refresh Rate. Refresh rate refers to the number of times the screen updates itself per second. Most laptop screens today have a 60hz refresh rates but can easily go as high as 120hz or more.

Also consider the brightness of your screen. This is usually measured in nits (measurement of luminosity). The higher the nits the brighter the screen will be. The recommended screen brightness is no less than 300 nits. Keep in mind that the larger the screen, the higher the nit output, the more power your laptop will be consuming and hence the shorter the battery life (see below).

Battery life

Battery life refers to the length of time long your laptop can operate on a single charge. This is dependent on battery capacity and power consumption:

  • Most spec sheets would measure battery capacity in watt-hours (Whr) or milliampere-hour (mAh). The higher the number, the more energy is stored within the power cells.
  • Battery consumption also depends on your hardware specification (more powerful processors and larger screens consume more power) and your usage (using maximum brightness with the screen, GPU, and CPU at full capacity while gaming).

Sometimes laptop manufacturers exaggerate battery life (giving you a figure which does not reflect normal usage patterns). Doing deep research into the model you are interested is recommended if you want to be confident of battery life. Many tech reviewers would test the battery capacity of the laptop using various settings.

If you are not going for a gaming laptop or a workstation (which tends to be used plugged into a power source), we’d recommend a laptop with a minimum eight (8) hours battery life.

Build

Another consideration when purchasing a modern laptop is its build. Build is a combination of the physical dimensions of the laptop and its design.

The physical dimension of a laptop refers to how large and thick your laptop is. It is often dictated how large the screen is and what type of laptop you are getting. Workstations and gaming laptops are usually thicker bodies given the amount of hardware they need to accommodate. Typically 2-in-1s laptops tend to be slimmer. The larger the laptop the heavier it tends to be. Important to consider if you are a mobile user.

The design of laptops today falls into two categories: clamshell and 2-in-1s.

  • Clamshells are traditional laptop design that fold and open to 90 to 180-degrees, Whilst the main body of the laptop can accommodate fans and cooling systems needed for high-performance machines, their design tends to be bulkier and heavier.
  • 2-in-1 laptops combine the functionality of a laptop and a tablet computer. The design is more flexible than Clamshell machines with 360-degree hinges and/or detachable screens. As laptops, they are more flexible and lightweight. On the downside, all the hardware (CPU, GPU, battery, etc) needs to be fitted into the screen which can lead to heating issues if the machine is used for heavy processing. 2-in-1 units are also more expensive than clamshells.

Other factors

When selecting your laptop also check out the number of Ports it has and the quality of the keyboard:

  • Ports: your laptop should have at least 2 USB ports, a USB 3.0 and a type C. HDMI ports are invaluable if you are looking for an office laptop or an all-around workhorse. For gamers, an ethernet cable and a headphone jack is crucial.
  • Keyboard: your laptop keyboard needs to be solid, tactile, have a solid key travel of up to 1.2mm (the distance on which keys are pressed) as well as good distance in between keys.

The best all-around laptop – ASUS Zenbook 13 UX333FA

The Zenbook 13 laptop is lightweight and compact, weighing only 1.9kg. With a good sized 13.3” screen, it boasts a ~95% screen-to-body ratio for a bezel-less experience. The overall build is good, with a responsive trackpad and a keyboard with a good amount of travel. In terms of performance, this ASUS laptop has good specifications with a built-in Nvidia GeForce MX150 which can handle 4K video editing and light to medium-spec gaming.

Although the screen is eye-catching, it is a bit dim at 225 nits (falling short of the 300-nit recommended). The keyboard is also a bit cramped with the right shift key too small compared to the one on the left; it takes a while to get used to such a small shift key. While it has a good selection of ports, it does not support Thunderbolt 3 and no type C charging.

Best gaming laptop – ASUS ROG Zephyrus S (GX701)

For gaming, we chose the compact yet powerful ASUS ROG Zephyrus S GX701. It is a slim laptop with a 17” screen. Whilst it weighs a hefty 3kg, the weight is evenly distributed across the laptop, enabling one-finger screen lift. In terms of aesthetics, it is an eye-catching design with a matte finish, solid metal chassis with copper edging. Thescreen features a 144Hz refresh rate. Whilst it is almost bezel-less on the top and side, a large chin at the bottom of the screen results in an 81% screen-to-body ratio.

The thin build and bezels mean this laptop requires an external camera (supplied with the machine). The Zephyrus S has a unique keyboard design with the keyboard lower at the bottom to accommodate the laptop’s complex cooling systems. The keyboard feels a bit shallow and the trackpad on the right can take a while to get used to. However, it shouldnt be an issue if you use external peripherals.

Like with its contemporaries, the Zephyrus S performs well thanks to its Nvidia RTX 2080 GPU and executes games at 60fps (frames per second) even on low setting. The laptop also allows you to select 3 modes: silent (lower fan speeds), balanced (normal setting), and turbo (with overclocking and fans running on full). Thanks to its high-end GPU, this model allows you to play with G-Sync and Ray Tracing for a fully immersive gaming experience.

Given it’s a thin laptop, there is no built-in ethernet cable crucial for gaming. Ethernet connectivity is therefore provided via an external dongle. Another drawback of the laptop is the short battery life especially if you enable G-Sync (screen technology developed by Nvidia to allows fixed refresh rates to avoid screen tearing). Best ASUS Chromebook – ASUS Chromebook Flip C434

The Chromebook Flip has an all-aluminium body with polished edges to give it a solid and well-made build. What sets it apart from other Chromebooks is the screen. It features a 14” touchscreen - an improvement from its predecessor’s 12” screenwith thin bezels. It produces sharp and bright images. With a flip design and solid hinges, the screen and can rotate to 360-degrees, enabling you to change between tablet, tent, and stand modes. For a Chromebook, it has good battery life lasting up to 9 hours in a single charge.

Since this is a Chromebook, the Intel Core M3 processor and 4GB RAM may be adequate for basic use but nothing more. The thin build also made it impossible to include fans so there may be a slight heating issue when you used heavily. If you are big on multitasking on your laptop, the 8GB RAM version may offer better value proposition. Furthermore, this Chromebook weighs around 1.5kg which can be heavy if used as a tablet. Best laptop for professional artist and creatives – ASUS ProArt Studiobook Pro 17

The ProArt StudioBook Pro ticks all the boxes in terms of build, performance, and aesthetics. Fresh from the box, this machine is made with rigid aluminium chassis. It is only 18.4mm thick and weighs only 2.4kg. This model features a 17” non-touch screen with small bezels on the side and a large chin at the bottom. The keyboard has good travel and evenly spaced keys, plus you get the signature ASUS numpad on the trackpad. Like the rest of the laptops in the series, the ProArt StudioBook Pro has an Nvidia Quadro 3000 GPU which is the best in terms of creative workstations.

What sets this laptop apart from its contemporaries is the price. Compared to a Dell Precision or an HP Zbook, it is much more affordable. Best business laptop – ASUS Expertbook B9450

The ASUS Expertbook B9450 may come in second to the Zenbook 14 UX333FA as an all-arounder but it is our choice for the best business laptop. For a 14” laptop, it weighs less than a kilogram thanks to its magnesium-lithium alloy chassis and ultra-thin build.

Its wide selection of ports makes this a great office laptop. It features an HDMI port, 2 Thunderbolt USB for fast transfer rates and a USB 3.0. The Expertbook B9450 also has Windows IR login and a fingerprint scanner for added security.

The most notable feature of this machine is the battery life. Running this laptop in normal usage (Chrome tabs and several apps running simultaneously) led to an impressive 10-hour battery life.

In terms of performance, the Expertbook B9450 works for checking emails, word processing and normal excel usage. Since this uses a U-series processor, its not a productivity workhorse. If you are planning to run huge excel files and data sets, we recommend an H-series chip or a mobile workstation.
