Mattresses play a huge role in your sleep cycle and being able to sleep comfortably is an important factor for us to be able to perform well in our day-to-day tasks. We spend roughly half of our lives sleeping, so it is important to maintain our mattress through proper cleaning. A good rule of thumb is to clean it every twice a year. Read on to find out the simple yet effective steps of cleaning your mattresses.
Strip the sheets
Before the start of the actual cleaning process, it is important to strip the mattress of all sheets and bedding. Toss it in the washing machine to remove the dust and dirt that has settled on it. If you wish to remove tougher stains, set the hottest water setting on the washing machine as well as dry on high heat. This will ideally remove every speck of stain and keep it germ-free.
Make use of a vacuum
The next step is to utilise a vacuum cleaner to vacuum the whole mattress surface. Make sure to attach the upholstery nozzle to the vacuum cleaner. Do pay more attention to the seams and crevices of the mattress as this is where the dirt, dust and other unpleasant stuff can collect. A normal vacuum cleaner can do the job, but do consider investing in a vacuum that is specifically used for cleaning mattresses so that it can ideally remove dead skin cells and dust mites.
After you have finished vacuuming the mattress, check for other stains so that you can spot treat them with the appropriate cleaner. Bodily fluids and other kinds of stains can be removed with any upholstery cleaner or an enzyme-based remover. You can also DIY the cleaner by mixing 1 teaspoon of mild dish detergent with 1 cup of warm water.
It is possible for the mattress to have a stench after using it for a couple of months. Simply deodorize the mattress by sprinkling baking soda over the whole surface. If it is the first time cleaning, utilise as much baking soda to cover the entire mattress. For the best results, the baking soda can be left on it for a day. Another natural method of keeping the mattress odour at bay is to sun it once every couple of weeks.
Add extra layers
Once step 1 to 4 has been settled, vacuum the mattress once again before placing the mattress cover over it. It is also advisable to add a mattress pad between the cover and bottom sheet so that it will help absorb moisture. This is because; the extra layers of protection will ideally prevent dust mites, fleas, and other pests.
