Lightning Connectivity

Apple is well known for having all sorts of proprietary technology; it is in their smartphone and tablet components, such as the A series SOCs (system-on-chip); software such as their MacOS and iOS operating systems; and also their hardware, such as charging ports. This kind of proprietary technology may be inconvenient, but it allows Apple to create superior efficiency with all of their devices because of the lack of fragmentation. The sixth generation iPhone, the iPhone 5, is a great example of this.

Before the iPhone 5, Apple's mobile devices of the iPhones, iPods, and iPads uses a proprietary 30-pin connector cable. In an effort to make things even more compact and convenient, the 30-pin connector is replaced with the brand new Lightning connector. The upside of the smaller 8-pin Lightning connector is that it can be inserted on either side, meaning it could go in facing upwards or downwards; solving little minor quirk a lot of people have with charging cables. Because of the new connector, a lot of previous peripherals and docks would not work, requiring an adapter instead.

A Major Design Change

iPhones have always been smaller smartphones compared to other smartphones. However, with the iPhone 5, the design has taken a significant change. The iPhone 5 is the first smartphone to be developed completely under the guidance of Tim Cook, after the passing of Steve Jobs.

At first look, it is immediately noticeable what has changed: The iPhone 5 is a much taller iPhone compared to the previous iPhone 4S, because of its taller 4.0 inch display. The iPhone 5 also now utilizes an aluminum composite frame instead of the stainless steel frame used in the iPhone 4S. It is also one of the slimmest phones ever made at only 0.30 inches thick.

As is also another standard, the iPhone 5 ships out with iOS 6 already installed on the iPhone. Apple's iOS 6 brings about a number of significant changes to not only the iPhone, but to the iPad and iPod as well. Default applications Google Maps and YouTube are now removed (but can be downloaded from the App Store), and new Apple applications are added as default.

Instead of Google Maps, navigation is now done through the new Apple Maps – which is rather unfortunate as it received a lot of negativity due to many errors in mapping, but is now improved. Before users could use the iTunes application to download and listen to Podcasts, but now it has to be done through the Apple Podcasts application instead.
