ASUS ZenFone 3 Max ZC520TL Review: A Mid-Range Powerhouse

Asus Zenfone 3 Max ZC520TL is a beautifully crafted phone with great battery life and reverse charging. But does it tick all the right boxes in other specs departments? Let's find out.

Image: Gizmochina

  • Premium chassis with smooth curves and metallic finish
  • Easy to use with one hand
  • Display sports thin bezels and a wide color gamut
  • Rear camera has no shutter lag
  • Decent night shots in bright lighting conditions
  • It performs day-to-day tasks very well
  • Expandable storage memory
  • It supports reverse charging
  • Great battery life

  • Aluminum back can be a bit slippery
  • Subpar image quality in low light
  • Camera lacks a manual mode
  • Occasional performance hiccups

Mid-range smartphones today either come with a few premium specs or focus on certain specifications such as large battery capacity or impressive cameras as in our review’s case – the Asus Zenfone 3 Max ZC520TL. It is one of the most popular mid-range phones in 2016, boasting a great battery life and budget-friendly price.

  • Gorgeous metallic finish and smooth curves
  • Small form factor for a convenient one-handed experience

The Asus Zenfone 3 Max ZC520TL is fitted with a premium chassis. It looks gorgeous due to its metallic finish, smooth curves, and slim form factor. To enhance its premium look, the device is topped with a 2.5D curved glass. The Zenfone 3 Max ZC520TL also has a small form factor which makes it a worthy option for smartphone users on a budget who are looking for a convenient one-handed experience. With a dimension of 149.5 x 73.7 x 8.6 mm, it fits easily in most pockets and is quite easy to hold with one hand. However, its aluminum back can be a bit slippery, so it’s best to put on a phone case.

Besides its elegant design and small form factor, it has nicely crafted buttons and a glass front that helps keep a firm grip on the phone. The Asus Zenfone 3 Max ZC520TL comes in three color options: Titanium Grey, Glacier Silver, and Sand Gold.

  • Thin bezels
  • Wide color gamut

The Asus ZenFone 3 Max ZC520TL sports a gorgeous 5.2-inch IPS display with 720 x 1280px resolution. It boasts thin bezels on the sides, which measure 2.2mm and contribute to its impressive 75% screen-to-body ratio. The screen provides good viewing angles, contrast, and decent brightness, although it’s not as vivid as the core Zenfone 3 model. The Asus ZenFone 3 Max ZC520TL also offers a wide color gamut that makes reds “redder”, blues “bluer”, and so forth.

  • Decent rear camera shots without any shutter lag
  • Good night shots as long as there’s sufficient lighting

With its 13MP rear camera, the ZenFone 3 Max ZC520TL produces impressive shots without any shutter lag. However, it lacks some form of stabilization, making it tough to capture good shots. You’ll need to have a stable hand to get pictures with decent contrast and accurate colors. While there is focus speed, it might miss the mark as the picture can still come out blurry even after focusing on a subject.

Night shots come out great as long as there’s sufficient lighting. Otherwise, image quality is subpar and loses a significant amount of sharpness, as the camera struggles with the lighting condition.

The camera on the ZenFone 3 Max ZC520TL is set in auto mode, for the most part, since it lacks manual mode. As for its selfie camera, it takes decent photos at 5 megapixels. Overall, the Asus ZenFone 3 Max ZC520TL delivers a satisfactory performance, as it provides a slightly higher dynamic range and just a bit of noise in low light.

  • It handles basic everyday tasks pretty well
  • Expandable internal storage

The ASUS ZenFone 3 Max ZC520TL is powered by a Mediatek MT6737M chipset which works with Mali-T720MP2 GPU and 2GB/3GB of RAM. It comes in 16GB and 32GB storage variants, which can be expanded for extra memory via a microSDHC card.

The Asus Zenfone 3 Max ZC520TL handles daily tasks pretty well (web and social media browsing, email, music, video, etc.) without any issues. However, you might encounter occasional performance hiccups when using some apps and navigating the UI. You might also experience some inconsistencies in the screen's responsiveness when applying more pressure with your fingers.

Battery Life

  • Sizable 4,100mAh battery capacity
  • It has reverse charging
  • Super Saving Mode

The ZenFone 3 Max’s marquee feature is its 4,100mAh battery, which is actually smaller compared to its predecessor. Nevertheless, it performed well based on the battery tests conducted by some popular tech review sites. Putting a video on loop while setting the brightness and volume to the optimal setting may get you around 8-9 hours of screen time on a single charge.

The ZenFone 3 Max ZC520TL supports reverse charging which allows the device to function as a power bank and charge up other gadgets. It also comes with a “Super Saving mode” – a power management feature that enables the device to extend its standby time even if the battery is too low.

As for charging time, it takes 3 hours to completely charge from 0 to 100%, which is decent given that the device lacks a fast-charging capability. However, users would have to wait quite a while for the device to be fully charged.

Premium design, sturdy build, and great battery life make the Asus ZenFone 3 Max ZC520TL a decent mid-range option. However, some features missed the mark including occasional performance hiccups, long charging time, and the lack of image stabilization.

All in all, the Asus ZenFone 3 Max ZC520TL is a good choice is you are looking for a mid-range phone that can perform basic everyday tasks well such as playing casual games and browsing social media apps, and still have enough battery charge left at the end of the day. But if you will use it for multitasking and graphics-intensive gaming, you may want to look for a much better device in the same budget segment.
