Asus ZenFone 5 Review: Impressive Budget Mid-Range Phone
The ZenFone 5 marks a successful comeback of Asus in the mid-range market. Is this device worth getting? Let’s find out in our detailed review!
Image: Gizmochina
Pros:
- Easy one-handed use
- Good design and build
- Impressive display with a wide color gamut
- Great camera performance in good lighting and low light
- AI camera
- Decent performance
- All-day battery with fast-charging technology
Cons:
- Smudge- magnet back
- Unreliable fingerprint scanner
With the release of the core ZenFone 5 in 2014, it helped Asus become a formidable player in the mid-range smartphone market, as the device comes with incredible specs at an affordable price. In their succeeding releases, however, the company lost its position and momentum. With that, Asus wanted to position itself in the smartphone market again by launching the new Asus ZenFone 5 (ZE620KL). Learn more about what this mid-range phone can do in our review below.
Design
- It’s easy to hold with one hand
- Decent build
Besides computing products, Asus is also known for creating premium flagship phones since the release of the ZenFone 3, with the ZenFone 5 continuing the trend. Design-wise, the first thing that comes to mind when you see the Asus ZenFone 5 is its design that uncannily resembles the iPhone X due to the notch on top of the device. It fits well with the ZenFone 5’s overall design.
As for its build, the ZenFone 5 is easy to hold with one hand, thanks to its smooth curved edges and small form factor. It feels solid and well-made in the hand.
One downside with the ZenFone 5 in terms of design is its glass chassis which is a smudge magnet. This can be remedied by putting on a case that is included in the package. Besides that, the fingerprint scanner can be unreliable at times since it’s a bit slow compared to other competing mid-range phones.
Display
- Good resolution and color reproduction
- Wide color gamut
The Asus ZenFone 5 sports a 6.2-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1080 x 2246px and a pixel density of 402PPI. For its decent size, it offers good resolution and color reproduction, as well as accuracy and viewing angles. The ZenFone 5 comes with built-in wide color gamut which makes greens “greener”, reds “redder”, and so forth, although it looks somewhat artificial up close. Overall, the ZenFone 5 provides a great viewing experience when playing games, watching videos, and much more.
Camera
- Great performance in well-lit and dimly lit conditions
- AI camera features
The Zenfone 5 is fitted with a 12MP + 8MP dual rear camera setup and an 8MP selfie camera. The second sensor on the rear camera takes wide-angle shots with a 120-degree view, while the main sensor is a Sony IMX363 sensor that offers an aperture of f/1.8. The dual rear cameras are impressive since they produce decent detail, good color reproduction, and sharpness in well-lit conditions. The same can be said for low-light performance, whereby images come out with decent detail with minimal noise. The dual rear cameras also offer a slew of features such as Auto, Beauty, GIF animation, Panorama, Slow Motion, and Super Resolution.
As for the selfie camera, it sports a decent 5MP sensor that offers good detail and just the right amount of beautification. You may also want to use the SelfieMaster app that comes with ZeniMoji, which allows you to use animated avatars that will replace your appearance during video chats and live streaming.
Furthermore, for it to stay true to its ‘’Intelligent phone’’ claims, the ZenFone 5 cameras are equipped with AI features including AI photo learning and AI scene detection.
Performance
- It can handle mundane tasks with ease
- Good performance and sizable RAM
The ZenFone 5 is packed with an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset with 4GB of RAM and 64GB internal storage. It can handle basic everyday tasks with ease including browsing social media apps, watching videos, listening to music, and messaging. The sizable 4GB of RAM makes multitasking a breeze; the same goes for gaming as the device can run Asphalt 9 at high graphics settings without experiencing drops in frame rate.
Warming can be a problem during long gaming sessions, but it doesn’t generate a lot of heat which shouldn’t be a cause for concern.
Battery
- All-day battery life
- Smart Charging technology
The ZenFone 5 is powered by a 3,300mAh battery which is an average capacity for mid-range phones. Based on PC Mark battery tests performed by some popular tech review sites, the battery charge can last for about 10 to 12 hours with mixed usage including light gaming, video and music streaming, and heavy social media browsing. You can further extend the device’s battery life using PowerMaster which can stop apps in the background and offer four battery modes that help conserve juice.
The ZenFone 5 harnesses Smart Charging technology which enables fast charging while you are using the device. If you leave the device plugged in overnight, then the feature slows down. As for the charging time, it can last for around 2 hours.
Verdict
Asus made a great comeback with the ZenFone 5, as it comes with decent specs at a reasonable price. For less than P20,000, you’ll get a nice 6.2-inch IPS display, mid-range Snapdragon 636, sizable 4GB of RAM, and a decent 3,300mAh battery with fast charging. While there’s room for improvement in terms of its smudge-attracting back and the fingerprint scanner, the ZenFone 5 remains an excellent mid-range phone and marks a great comeback of Asus in the mid-range segment.
