The Huawei Mate 30 Pro has a huge 4,500mAh battery, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, a brand new Kirin 990 chipset, and 6.53 inches of virtually wraparound OLED screen, all packaged in a rich glass and metal design.
Design and Display
The Huawei Mate 30 Pro is big, but not quite Galaxy Note 10 Plus big, with its smaller 6.53-inch screen. Its design is standout though with a true edge-to-edge curved screen that, when viewed head-on, looks like it wraps around the phone.
With curved Gorilla Glass 6 on either side, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro doesn’t just feel rich and comfortable, it has got a healthy dose of scratch resistance to it, which coupled with IP68 water and dust resistance makes sure the elements won’t get better of it. The only port is a USB-C one at the base, there’s no headphone jack, which will irk many potential buyers, and there’s a mono bottom-firing speaker too.
As for buttons, there’s just one- a power button. Yep, that’s right, no volume rocker. The company has devised a simple screen-centric way of increasing and reducing the volume- double-tap the side of the display and slide up or down. With its 18.5:9 aspect ratio, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro is a bit wider than 19.5:9 phones like the Asus ROG Phone 2. The Mate 30 Pro’s curved OLED screen spills over the side of the device at an almost 90-degree angle, features a resolution of 1176 x 2400 pixels, and support for the full DCI-P3 color space as well as HDR10.
With a 4,500mAh battery, the Mate 30 Pro may be one of the best smartphones around from a power point of view. Within the settings, there are standard Huawei power-saving features that go a step beyond stock Android. These include Power Saving mode, Ultra Power Saving mode, App Launch, and power consumption details.
This is also where you can toggle Performance Mode on or off- for when you have some battery to spare and want maximum gaming performance, and you can fire up reverse wireless charging here too.
While the Mate 30 Pro shoots 10MP images by default, it can crank that number up to full 40MP resolution for shots taken in great light that you might want to blow up. For the most part, the benefits of shooting in 10MP are numerous though; lower-res shots have better dynamic range, less noise and take up less space.
The Mate 30 Pro’s camera array consists of a 40MP wide camera with an f/1.6, 27mm lens loaded up with optical image stabilization (OIS). The telephoto camera gets you a 3x zoom, has an 8MP resolution and features an f/2.4 lens and OIS, while the ultra-wide cinema camera has a 40MP resolution, 18mm focal length and an f/1.8 aperture.
Images captured in auto mode across cameras are loaded up with impact-colors are zesty, dynamic range is fair to good and detail is ample, with accurate focus.
