Microsoft Lumia 550 Philippines

Function First, Form Second

The mention of Microsoft with any device, be it smartphone or laptop, always suggests an incredibly strong suite of productivity applications and programs that work. It is to no surprise then, that the Microsoft Lumia 550 has all of the great features and specs that make it a superb smartphone with great productivity.

However great the smartphone is in the productivity and Windows operating system department, the physicality of it is the opposite. That isn’t to say that the design is bad by any means, but the smartphone does do the job of providing an excellent grip and comfortable shape to hold in the hand without any loud features that can come off as inconvenient. Clad entirely in matte plastic with no fancy curves or artsy design cues, the Lumia 550 is just that – a functional Windows smartphone. On the rear of the smartphone is nothing but a tiny little camera bump, the camera flash, and the ever present Windows logo sitting square on the centre.

Microsoft Windows 10 operating system

The simplistic and quiet design of the Lumia 550 is nothing like the suite of great software that is built right into the phone. First of all, the Lumia 550 comes installed with Microsoft’s very own Windows 10 operating system, albeit slightly different from the ones you are probably familiar with on your personal computers. Turning on the phone will have you greeted with Windows tiles, little reactive squares on the home-screen that update with little bits of glance-able information.

The Windows 10 operating system also brings along with it great Windows applications such as Outlook Mail, Outlook Calendar, and even Microsoft Words. The Outlook application lets you read and manage all of your emails from various different providers. Its intuitive and provides a great interface that is very user friendly.

Like the great software, the humble little body of the Lumia 550 hides a rather well performing 5-megapixel camera. The camera of the Lumia 550 takes great photographs in most lighting, and when considering the price point, is pretty respectable. The camera app makes it easy to capture images as well, with a simple and straightforward interface.

The Rich Capture mode for example, takes photographs in similar fashion of HDR. It captures a single photo, and then analyses the scene before it applies effects such as to correct lighting and the like for a better photograph.
