Nokia 10 Could Be the First-Ever Phone with a Penta-Lens Setup
After its successful acquisition of selling Nokia devices in 2016, HMD unveiled in early 2017 their plans of kickstarting the revival of the classic handset, Nokia 3310. For over the last 18 months, they have strengthened the Nokia brand to compete with top manufacturers and have released impressive devices such as the Nokia 8 which became a best-seller in some countries in Asia and Middle East. Apart from the release of budget-friendly devices with impressive cameras, they have utilized the Android platform to gain a stronger foothold in the market. Today, their upcoming Nokia 10 phone has been creating a significant impression these days, as it is rumored to come with a remarkable camera array.
Based on the design renders and photos that have been circulating on the web, the Nokia 10 will come with five cameras on the back! If this turns out to be true, then it will be the first-ever device to have a penta-lens setup.
The leaked image of what appears to be the Nokia 10’s camera module shows five sensors assembled in a circular pattern, coupled with the Zeiss branding. To give a bit of background, HMD partnered with the lens manufacturer, Zeiss, in 2017 to come up with new Android handsets that sport top-notch optics. One of Zeiss incredible patents was a tiny zoom camera module that appears to be similar to the leaked image.
As of writing, it’s not yet clear what are the functions of the five sensors on the Nokia 10. In early 2018, Huawei released the P20 Pro with a triple camera setup, supporting 5x hybrid zoom or 3x optical zoom. Another manufacturer that is rumored to come up with a new flagship device with five sensors is LG. While this feature could definitely improve a camera’s zooming capability, these manufacturers can do far better. And with Nokia’s impressive camera work in the past, as seen in previous models like the Lumia 1020 sensors, 808 Purview, and Ozo VR sensor, sporting a penta-lens camera setup on their new device is something that they can pull off.
If HMD did push through the idea of sporting its new Nokia flagship phone with five cameras, then that would increase their visibility in the market once the device is out and would certainly catch the attention of their competitors.
