Oppo A37 Review: A Decent Phone for its Class
With a plethora of smartphones in the entry-level segment, does the OPPO A37 tick all the right boxes to entice consumers who are on the lookout for a value-for-money phone? Let’s find out!
- Easy one-handed use
- Premium design
- Decent display with vivid colors and nice viewing angles
- It performs day-to-day tasks very well
- Good battery life
- Small screen size
- Cropped images have subpar image quality
- Occasional slow loading times while gaming
In 2016, OPPO launched one of its best-looking budget phones – the OPPO A37. Although it lacks processing power, it offers a premium build and decent display – features that you won’t always find in some phones in the budget segment.
- Easy to use with one hand
- Premium finish
The OPPO A37 has a small form factor with a dimension of 143.1 x 71 x 7.7 mm and a 5-inch display on its front panel. Due to its small build, it offers an ergonomic feel, as you can easily use it with one hand. It also feels nice in the hand since its metal-clad back is topped with a matte finish paint. Not to mention, its white front panel adds to the premium feel, which isn’t common in some smartphones in the price range.
- Decent display resolution
- Nice colors and viewing angles
The OPPO A37 is fitted with a 5-inch IPS display with a 720 x 1280px (HD) resolution and a pixel density of 294PPI. For an entry-level device, it offers a decent resolution. When using the device outdoors, colors and viewing angles come out good, as there is sufficient brightness and a good amount of detail. All in all, the OPPO A37 won’t give you any issues in the display department, except for its small screen size if you prefer a larger display.
- Good pictures in well-lit and dim environments
- Nice selfie shots even in low light
In the camera department, the OPPO A37 sports a decent 8MP rear sensor that produces good pictures in bright and low light conditions. It comes with autofocus that’s fast enough for macro photography. However, for cropped images, image quality is subpar. As for the 5MP selfie camera, it offers good shots and even has a front-facing flash for those who like to take selfies in low-light conditions.
When it comes to camera features, the Oppo A37 offers the standard yet handy ones such as Panorama, Filter, GIF, Beauty, and Ultra HD.
- It can handle mundane tasks with ease
- It can run mid-end-graphics mobile games
With a Snapdragon 410 chipset, 2GB of RAM, and Adreno 306 GPU, the OPPO A37 offers limited processing power. Nevertheless, it can handle light, day-to-day tasks with ease. It can even keep up running mid-end-graphics mobile games like Asphalt 8, although slow loading times are noticeable. The OPPO A37 also packs 16GB of internal storage which can be expanded via a microSD card.
As for connectivity features, it has quite a few yet handy ones such as Bluetooth 4.0, LTE, WiFi 802.11 a/g/b/n, hotspot, GPS, and FM Radio. It also supports two nano-SIM cards and has its dedicated micro SD card slot.
- Good battery life
- ColorOS 3.0 manages background apps
For a budget phone, the 2,630mAh battery in the OPPO A37 can be considered average, but not in today’s standards. Nevertheless, it can last a whole day with light, mixed usage including browsing the web and social media, watching videos, listening to music, and light gaming, all thanks to its modest specs. On top of that, the OPPO A37 runs on ColorOS 3.0 (based on Android 5.1 Lollipop) which manages apps running in the background, maximizing battery life. On the other hand, the battery can drain pretty quickly when you play mobile games under the sun at maximum brightness while using mobile data. Hence, it’s best not to use the device under such conditions.
At an affordable price of ₱8,990, the OPPO A37 is a decent phone for its class. It’s a great option for those who want a small phone with a nice design, good battery life, and a decent camera, on a budget. However, it lacks some remarkable value-for-money features that will persuade buyers. If you’re looking for a bang-for-the-buck phone, then you may want to look for a much better device in the same budget segment.
