OPPO F5 Review: More Than Just a Selfie Camera Phone

The OPPO F5 boasts a front-facing camera with AI Beautification. Besides that, let’s see what else the F5 can offer in our detailed review below.

Image: Gizmochina

Pros:

  • Premium design
  • Easy one-handed use
  • 18:9 display topped with Gorilla Glass 5 protection
  • Impressive front camera with AI Beautification
  • Decent performance
  • Fingerprint scanner and Face ID

Cons:

  • Mediocre rear camera
  • Iffy face unlock

Besides top-of-the-line processors and gimmicky features, smartphone manufacturers today put top priority on selfie cameras, as they have already become a deciding factor that buyers use to evaluate a smartphone’s value. With that, OPPO upped their selfie game of their mid-range phone, the OPPO F5, by integrating AI into its selfie camera.

Design

  • Sleek device
  • Gorilla Glass 5 protection
  • Easy one-handed use

The F5 is one of OPPO’s slimmest mobile phones to date, as it sports thin bezels, smooth curved edges, and a premium design. Its back may be clad in plastic but it boasts a matte finish that looks like metal at a glance. Meanwhile, the front panel is topped with Gorilla Glass 5 which provides protection against drops from 1.6 meters onto a rough surface 80 percent of the time. With a dimension of 156.5 x 76 x 7.5 mm, it’s definitely a large device. Nevertheless, it’s comfortable to use with one hand, thanks to its smooth curved edges and weight.

Display

  • 18:9 display with thin bezels
  • Good viewing angles and legibility

With a 6-inch IPS display, 2160 x 1080px resolution (HD+), and a pixel density of 402PPI, the OPPO F5 offers crisp and vibrant visuals, with colors popping just right. It offers good viewing angles and is legible enough under the sun.

The OPPO F5 is one of the first phones from OPPO to come with an 18:9 display that boasts narrow bezels at the top and bottom edges of the screen. With that, you’ll get a large screen that almost fits the phone’s entire body, which usually can only accommodate less than 6-inches.

Camera

  • Crisp and vivid rear camera shots with fast autofocus
  • Selfie camera comes integrated with AI Beautification

The 16MP f/1.8 camera on the OPPO F5 can take crisp and vibrant shots, especially when shooting outdoors. In low light, autofocus performs quickly, while image quality is good but with some noticeable noise.

Now for its marquee feature, the OPPO F5 has an impressive 20MP selfie camera that comes integrated with AI Beautification that can identify over 200 facial recognition points including cheeks, nose, eyes, and lips. This will help users identify which spots need enhancing.

As for camera modes, the OPPO F5 comes with Expert, digital zoom (2x), HDR, beauty, and Panorama. Meanwhile, the selfie camera is packed with other features such as screen flash and depth effect.

Performance

  • Decent performance
  • Biometric features

The OPPO F5 is powered by MediaTek MT6763T Helio P23 octa-core chipset which works with Mali-G71 CPU and 4GB of RAM. It can handle most day-to-day tasks with ease including graphics-intensive gaming with apps like Mobile Legends. Spending long hours at gaming can result in warming of the device but it doesn’t become too hot to be a cause of serious concern.

Security features are also available on the OPPO F5 such as fingerprint scanner and face unlock. Both biometric features work great, although the face unlock only works best when the environment is well-lit, as it uses the front-facing camera.

When it comes to connectivity features, the OPPO F5 is packed with quite a few yet handy ones like Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/g/b/n, hotspot, LTE, dual-SIM, and GPS.

Battery Life

  • Good battery life
  • Above-average charging performance

The OPPO F5 houses a 3,200mAh battery that can last around 15 hours based on battery tests conducted by some popular tech review sites. With moderate, mixed usage, the battery can last all day on a single charge. In terms of charging, it will take around two hours to completely charge from empty to full. This is slightly better than some other phones in the lower mid-range segment.

Verdict

Unlike other competing selfie-centric smartphones, the OPPO F5 upped its selfie game not just by simply bumping the megapixel count, but by integrating AI Beautification. Besides that, it has a nice 18:9 display with narrow bezels, decent performance, snappy fingerprint scanner, and great battery life. There are some downsides though, such as the mediocre rear camera and iffy face unlock, but these are just small trade-offs considering the advantages.

Does Oppo F5 support fast charging?

Yes, the Oppo F5 does support fast-charging.

How many GB is Oppo F5?

The Oppo F5 has 4GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage available.
