Samsung Galaxy S20 Review
The Samsung Galaxy S20 offers some additional features and upgrades, making it a fitting successor to the Galaxy S10. Here are our first impressions of the device in terms of specs.
Samsung hasn't implemented huge design changes to its Galaxy S series phones in years. As such, the S20 flagship collection looks similar to its predecessors. Nevertheless, it already sports impressive design features including a large 6.2-inch display, glass back, and smooth curved edges. With that, there isn’t much point in revamping the S20’s overall design. There are a few notable changes though such as the omission of the 3.5mm headphone jack and toned-down options, whereby Samsung should have come up with more interesting color palettes.
Compared to previous flagships, the 6.2-inch QHD+ (1440 x 3200px) display on the Samsung Galaxy S20 is just as stunning, and this time it now comes with a 120Hz refresh rate. This means the device's AMOLED panel will refresh 120 times per second, rather than the standard 60 times per second. This results in remarkable display quality and gives an illusion of a fast-performing device. However, this feature only works when the resolution is set to Full High Definition.
The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra may have gotten most of the powerful camera upgrades (100x space zoom, 108MP main sensor, and 40MP front camera), but the Galaxy S20 also got some significant upgrades, nevertheless. The S20 comes with three rear cameras - a wide-angle 12MP f/1.8 with optical image stabilization (OIS), an ultrawide-angle 12MP, and a 64MP telephoto f/2.0 sensor with OIS.
Compared to the Galaxy S10 last year, the telephoto lens on the S20 has a bigger pixel count of 64MP, while S10 only has 12MP. The telephoto sensor is also fitted with a "Space Zoom" feature, which harnesses 3x hybrid optic zoom, 30x super-resolution zoom, and AI resulting in decent quality images at high zoom levels.
The Samsung Galaxy S20 is packed with an Exynos 990 chipset with 12GB of RAM and Adreno 650 GPU. As such, you can expect that the device will perform pretty fast. As for the software, the S20 comes with a new feature called "Quick Share" which is Samsung's version of AirDrop that uses Wi-Fi Direct to quickly transfer files between Samsung devices.
The Samsung Galaxy S20 also received an upgrade in the battery department, as it now sports a bigger 4000mAh battery capacity compared to the 3400mAh on the S10. Samsung also bumped the charging speed of the S20 to 25W from 15W on last year’s flagship device.
While the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra gets most of the best upgrades, the Galaxy S20 also gets some significant upgrades, making it a fitting successor to the S10. It ticks all the right boxes in terms of specs, especially the improved telephoto sensor.
