Samsung Galaxy Z Flip Review

Despite its quite hefty price and limited availability, the first batch of Samsung Galaxy Z Flip phones was sold out across the globe. The Z Flip is a durable flip phone that ticks most of the right boxes in the specs sheet, unlike the iconic Moto Razr.

When closed, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is a well-built device that measures 87.4 x 73.6 x 17.3 mm and weighs 183g. It boasts smooth rounded edges, unlike the Moto Razr that sports pointy corners. While its glass-clad back attracts smudges and fingerprints easily, you can avoid this by putting on a two-piece plastic case.

When unfolded, the Galaxy Z Flip exhibits a 6.7-inch 1080 x 2636 AMOLED display that has a slight crease in the middle. This crease becomes more prominent over time as you keep using the device. You can also feel the crease at certain angles, although it doesn’t affect the quality of images or videos. Furthermore, the Z Flip is a very durable device, as it can go unscratched or undented in your bag or pocket with other solid objects, thanks to its Gorilla Glass 6 protection that is topped all over the phone’s aluminum chassis.

On the device’s exterior, there’s a small 1.1-inch AMOLED cover display that provides enough space to show time, battery, and notifications. Meanwhile, the Z Flip’s main display sports a 6.7 inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 2636px and a pixel density of 425PPI. Like any high-end Samsung display, the main screen on the Galaxy Z Flip features vibrant colors and deep blacks.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is fitted with two 12MP main cameras with apertures of f/1.8 and f/2.2 which are placed on the device’s exterior when folded. It has a 10MP f/1.5 selfie camera on the inside which performs on the same level as Galaxy S10 cameras. The small display on the Z Flip’s front panel also functions as a camera viewfinder. You can take a selfie with it using its 12MP main camera by tapping the power button twice.

Besides its flipping capability, another marquee feature of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is its stable camera which can shoot photos and videos while it’s in L-shaped or V-Shaped mode. While in L-shaped mode, you can set the device on a table and use the selfie camera for video chats.

Powered by a Snapdragon 855+ chipset, paired with 8GB of RAM and Adreno 640GPU, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip seems on par with the Galaxy S10 in terms of processing performance. But unlike the S10, the Galaxy Z Flip doesn’t have a micro SD card slot to extend its 256GB of internal storage.

Battery Life

The 3,300mAh battery on the Samsung Galaxy Z flip is satisfactory, as it can last through the day with mixed usage including internet and social media browsing, gaming, and video watching/streaming. The phone’s flip ability also helps maximize battery life as you don’t have to light up the entire display to browse the web or check emails. As for charging, the Z Flip has a wireless charging capability and 15-watt fast charging support that can raise the battery charge level to around 80% in an hour.

With its flipping nature and beautiful aesthetic, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is a fantastic device for those who prefer a premium design with impressive specs, all for an astronomical price. If you are looking for good value for money, then go for the Samsung S20 or S20+ which offer better specs, except for the flipping capability.
