The reason for leather’s appeal is not difficult to understand as it has a certain rugged look to it. This material has long been used to make all sorts of garments from clothes to accessories. Moreover, it is very durable and can last a lifetime if it is well-maintained. Although it may be a sturdy product, leather just like skin can easily dry, crack, stain, warp, etc. If you plan to pass your leather goods on to your future generation, here are ways to care for it.
Maintaining your leather through polishing is mainly for aesthetics purposes. This is because; it is mostly about the actual shine of the product (usually shoes or bags) rather than protecting it from other elements. Most importantly, you need to look out for polishes with moisturizing element. The best way to do so is to read the product description and user reviews to know what you are getting your hands on. As polishing is part of a good cleaning routine, it is without a doubt, not a bad thing to do. If you want your leather products to look good, it really depends on how often you polish it. However, casual accessories usually do not need much polishing. On the other hand, if you own a nice bag or shoe, this is where polish really comes in.
Similar to our skin, we apply moisturizer to keep it hydrated. Same goes to leather, conditioner or cream moisturizers the material so that it does not easily dry out and crack. Compared to polishing, conditioners or creams will not make your leather goods shine but instead protect them. In most cases, conditioners would not waterproof your leather, although there are some that do include a water-repelling element. Most leather conditioners have a similar feel to lotion where it can be gently rubbed into the product. The hide will soak up the condition, just like how your skin soaks up moisturizer. Depending on how you want your leather to turn out, experts suggest conditions every six to twelve months in order to let it completely dry out before re-applying. This is so that the leather still looks rugged and tough. Those who live in a drier climate are recommended to moisturize every three months or so.
Providing a coating to your leather shoe can repel water, drinks, rain, etc. Generally, waterproofing sprays or waxes is a treatment that is needed to be done only once a year. However, it also depends on the frequency of the usage. Waterproofing sprays are very convenient and should only be utilized in a pinch. Nevertheless, it creates a lower quality effect and is needed to be re-applied a couple of times over the course of a year in particularly during a rainy season. On the other hand, for greater precision and control, it is preferable to utilize waxes as it is much more durable.
The oldest and most reliable way when it comes to leather care is to utilize a damp cloth. Simply giving it a wipe down every once in a week will get rid of any dirt and dust. Soap is not necessary as the chemicals may ruin the leather over time.
Allow leather to breathe
To allow moisture to evaporate naturally, leather products should be aired so that air is able to naturally pass through leather. This will prevent the leather from being affected mildew. Ventilation would not happen with the leather being all sealed up. So make sure to avoid placing it in a plastic bag or somewhere that has a lack of exposure to air. Make use of storage or travel bags which is made off breathable fabric. Another unique way of storing leather goods are pillowcases.
Keep away from any form of heat
It is possible for leather items to get waterlogged and when it does, you should avoid placing it in front of a heater or hair dryer to speed up the drying process. When leather is exposed to higher temperatures it can shrink and possibly dry out. Instead, allow it to dry naturally even if it takes a longer time. Same goes to storing; it should be kept out of the sunlight as it may speed up the fading process. Store in places away from the sunlight, ensuring there is airflow so that mildew does not form.
