Select a wireless router
A home office network is never complete without a router. And for virtually every network you’re likely to set up, it requires you to build a combination of wired and wireless connections. A wireless router offers both, that’s why it’s an essential network gear.
The router functions as a link between your LAN (Local Area Network) and the WAN (Wide Area Network or the Internet). Not to mention, it works as your network’s DHCP server, meaning, it enables each device attached to the router to have its own private and unique IP address. This is important in order for your devices on the network to communicate with each other. Select a Networking Standard
It’s important to figure out what type of wireless networking standard the router supports. This is because it determines the router’s compatibility to other wireless devices. For instance, current devices like iPads and latest models of desktops are equipped with an 802.11n networking standard. A router that doesn’t support this configuration will not be able to connect to such devices.
The “802.11n” or “N” standard for short can deliver transfer rates of up to 540 Mbps faster than other standards such as b and g. However, if you have older devices that are not compatible with the N standard, then you need a router that can support 802.11 b and g to connect them to the network. So, if you want to connect your new and old devices, it’s best to get a router that can support N, b, and g standards. Build a Wired Ethernet connection
A wired Ethernet connection is known for its faster transmission of data. For this reason, many people choose this type of connection, allowing them to transfer or stream large multimedia files quickly. D-Link routers and other devices like gaming consoles are bundled with an ethernet cord but you may need to buy extras if you want to expand your network.
All ethernet cords these days are Category 5 cables (Cat5 for short), meaning they can keep signals on different channels and can support download speeds of up to 1000 Mbps at 100 MHz. Aside from the Cat5 cords, there are Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat7 cables which have better capabilities but are more expensive. If you are looking for an affordable alternative, there are powerline adapters that can extend your network connection through electrical outlets. Not only are they affordable but also easy to connect to devices, saving you money for extra cables and additional electrical costs. However, they run slower compared to Cat5 cables.
Choose the Correct Client Adapters
Every device connecting to your network requires a wireless adapter in order to get a Wi-Fi signal. However, not all devices come with a built-in wireless adapter so it’s best to purchase one so you can use it if the need arises. If you don’t want to take up your router’s USB port for an adapter, then you may want a PC card that slips into a laptop or computer’s PC card slot.
Use switches and hubs
A regular router comes with four Ethernet ports for wiring devices like computers, gaming consoles, servers, and storage devices. If your network requires you to add more ports, then you need to get a switch. Wiring this to your router gives you additional ports, allowing you to connect to more clients and devices. If you want a cheaper alternative that offers the same functionality, then go for a hub. A hub can provide as many additional ports as a switch but it doesn’t have a management interface that sends and broadcasts network data to each device connected to the network.
