Edko Films Ltd. Cold War (2012) (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)
₱ 1,598.00
Ten years after Infernal Affairs, Hong Kong filmmakers have again raised the bar on the crime genre! The brainchild of first-time writer-director duo Longman Leung and Sunny Luk, Cold War reveals the inner workings of Hong Kong's law enforcement systems as the city is faced with an unprecedented security crisis. Playing rival police commissioners vying for top power, Aaron Kwok and Tony Leung Ka Fai headline the film's star-studded cast, which also includes Eddie Peng, Aarif Lee, Gordon Lam and Charlie Young, plus Andy Lau in a special appearance. The intense and tight-paced cop action thriller gives audiences an edge-of-the-seat experience with intelligent, layered plots in addition to exciting gunfights and car-chase scenes choreographed by action director Chin Ka Lok. Designated as the Opening Film of the 17th Busan International Film Festival, Cold War has gone on to take moviegoers everywhere by storm and notably become the highest-grossing Hong Kong film of 2012.

They say Hong Kong is the safest city in Asia. But tonight, a police van has been hijacked along with the arms, equipment and the five officers aboard, one of the hostages being the only son of police deputy commissioner M.B. Lee (Tony Leung Ka Fai)! With the chief commissioner away on a conference overseas, the fiery Lee immediately takes command of the rescue operation codenamed "Cold War" but the mysterious kidnappers clearly know the police procedures and are therefore in an advantageous position. Objecting to Lee's aggressive but futile methods, the other deputy commissioner Sean Lau (Aaron Kwok) steps in at this time of crisis to lead the operation. But even Lau's careful plan to negotiate with the kidnappers ends up a failure, losing the $50 million cash ransom and the life of his lieutenant in the process. Meanwhile, the ICAC (Independent Commission Against Corruption) begins to investigate Lau and Lee on suspicion of having hidden ties to the kidnappers...

The Hong Kong Version Blu-ray comes with special features including making-of, interview, photo gallery, teaser and trailer.

Edko Films Ltd. Cart (2014) (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)
₱ 1,373.00
Based on the true story of the E-Land Mart strike, Cart follows a group of female contract workers who band together to fight for their rights when they get unfairly laid off from their jobs. Female director Boo Ji Young (Sisters on the Road) brings together an award-winning lineup of actresses Yeom Jung Ah (A Tale of Two Sisters), Moon Jung Hee (Hide and Seek), Kim Young Ae (The Attorney) and Chun Woo Hee (Han Gong Ju) for this empathetic drama about labor activism and its effects on the women's lives and families. Cart also co-stars Kim Kang Woo (Tabloid Truth) as a mart supervisor who supports the women's cause and EXO's D.O (It's Okay, That's Love) as Yeom Jung Ah's teenage son.

Working mother of two Sun Hee (Yeom Jung Ah) is a model employee at the large discount mart she works for, and has been promised promotion to full-time status. Before the promotion comes through, however, she and the other female contract workers, many of whom depend on the job for livelihood, are suddenly informed that their contracts have been terminated early. They form a union and attempt to negotiate, but management refuses to even acknowledge them. To make their voices heard, the women stage a sitdown strike and take over the mart in what will be the beginning of a long and grueling fight with the company.

Grab a Wuba of your own and go on a Monster Hunt! In 2015, a little radish created a massive phenomenon in China. The brainchild of respected animator Raman Hui (also known as "Father of Shrek"), Huba was brought to life in Monster Hunt by Emmy Award-winning special effects maestros. The little radish is the undisputed star of the big-budget family-friendly fantasy comedy, sharing the screen with the likes of Jing Boran (Lost and Love), Bai Baihe (The Stolen Years), Eric Tsang (An Inspector Calls), Sandra Ng (Mcdull, Me And My Mum), Wallace Chung (The Continent) and Tang Wei (The Golden Era) in a story inspired by a tale in Pu Songling's oft-adapted Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio. Such is the charm and power of Wuba that Monster Hunt has definitively overtaken 2012's Lost in Thailand as China's biggest film of all time.

Life is simple in Yongning Village. So simple, in fact, that the uneasy truce between monsters and humans, who now live in relative peace after a warring period, hardly seems to be of concern. But danger and adventure arise where you least expect them to, and the little village's fortunes change when the pregnant queen of the monsters takes refuge there with her servants Zhugao (Eric Tsang) and Fat Ying (Sandra Ng) after a coup in their realm. A wild chase ensues when the queen looks to make a meal of bumbling villager Tianyin (Jing Boran), and somehow, the chase ends with Tianyin bearing the monster prince. Before he gets a chance to give birth to the prince, though, monster hunter Xiaolan (Bai Baihe) storms into Yongning, looking to capture the soon-to-be-born Wuba for a hefty bounty.

Johnnie To teams up with Sylvia Chang to bring the latter's play to the big screen in Office! In 2008, Chang and stage director Edward Lam debuted Design for Living in Shenzhen. Written by and starring Chang herself, the play went on to run another 82 shows to massive acclaim. Towards the end of its run, Chang began bouncing around the idea of adapting the script to film as a musical, and the wheels were set in motion when To expressed interest in directing. The partners then assembled a truly star-studded cast in Eason Chan, Chow Yun Fat and Tang Wei, as well as newcomers Wang Zi Yi and Lang Yue Ting. For the all-important music, Chang and To enlisted the efforts of the iconic Luo Dayou.

Lee Seung (Wang Zi Yi), newly hired at Jones & Sunn, enters the billion-dollar company with all the hope and bright-eyed idealism youth affords. However, he soon finds that this new world is much more complicated than he first thought, with a myriad of illicit relationships, including one between the company chairman (Chow Yun Fat) and the CEO (Sylvia Chang), and the cutthroat world of finance laid bare before his eyes as Jones & Sunn prepares to go public.

My Sassy Girl's Jeon Ji Hyun makes her English-language debut in the 2009 fantasy action thriller Blood: The Last Vampire directed by Chris Nahon (Kiss of the Dragon). Based on the same-titled 2000 animated feature, Blood revolves around a mysterious female slayer who battles hordes of vampires in postwar Japan. Billed under her English name Gianna, Jeon Ji Hyun dons the trademark pigtails and sailor suit uniform for a tough-as-nails turn as the katana-wielding heroine. Playing Jeon's arch-nemesis is another crossover Asian star, popular Japanese actress Koyuki from The Last Samurai. Featuring impressive CG effects and sword and wirework action choreographed by Corey Yuen (Red Cliff), Blood: The Last Vampire presents a gritty, gothic world of fantastical adventure and thrilling action.

Though she looks like a teenage girl, Saya (Jeon Ji Hyun) has actually been hunting bloodsuckers for centuries. Allied with a top-secret government organization, Saya's only goal is to track down Onigen, the most powerful of all vampires. Her quest brings her to a US military airbase which has seen numerous vampire attacks. Saya goes undercover at the local high school to investigate, but all hell breaks loose when classmate and general's daughter Alice (Allison Miller) discovers her identity. Much blood is shed and vampires slayed as Saya's dark past is slowly revealed, bringing her closer than ever to Onigen.

"Let's get married, while we're still alive."

Zhang Ziyi and Aaron Kwok are a doomed couple in Love for Life, the third directorial feature from internationally renowned Chinese cinematographer Gu Changwei (Peacock, And the Spring Comes). Christopher Doyle takes Gu's place behind the camera to capture the lead pair sans their superstar glamor, most notably for Kwok as he goes all out to play an earthy country bumpkin. The heartfelt romance drama tackles the controversial issue of AIDS patients in rural China contracting the HIV virus via contaminated blood transfusion. Initially titled Till Death Do Us Part, the tragic love story co-stars Jiang Wenli (Farewell My Concubine), Pu Cunxin (Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon), and Wang Baoqiang (Mr. Tree), and features several real AIDS patients in supporting roles and big-name directors in cameos. Zhao Liang's documentary film Together was made as a companion piece to Gu's intense dramatic effort, both aimed at fighting the society's prejudice against the HIV-infected and increasing public awareness of the disease.

Set in a remote village in Mainland China during the 1990s, Love for Life centers on villager Deyi (Aaron Kwok), who used to lead a simple, harmonious life with his family. But his selfish elder brother Qiquan (Pu Cunxin), desperate to escape poverty, deals in the black market blood trade and persuades the villagers to sell their blood. An infectious and incurable "fever" epidemic soon breaks out, and the once peaceful village becomes plagued by fear, hatred, and suspicion. Driven by guilt, Qiquan's father Lao Zhuzhu rounds up the afflicted - Deyi included - and accommodates them in the deserted school as a temporary home. In that isolated community where conflicts and despair come unchecked, Deyi finds renewed passion for life when he meets fellow outcast Qinqin (Zhang Ziyi), the forsaken wife of his cousin. Fueled by mutual pity, the two tortured souls seek solace in each other, and decide to take their last chance at happiness while their days are numbered.

Learning martial arts from the same master as Jackie Chan, Corey Yuen has now become one of the most renowned action directors in the Hong Kong film industry as well as in Hollywood. Four girls (Jaime Pressly, Holly Valance, Devon Aoki, and Sarah Carter) join an invitation-only martial arts contest on a secluded island. They each have a secret in joining the tournament, apart from the apparent purpose of getting the $10 million jackpot. However, they smell something fishy about the whole contest, and soon they find the need to form a difficult alliance to fight against the real villain... DOA: Dead or Alive serves up great entertainment and action, with impressive fighting sequences from the four sexy leads.

Edko Films Ltd. The Science Of Sleep (2006) (VCD) (Hong Kong Version)
₱ 349.00
Michael Gondry, the acclaimed director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, returns with the wildly imaginative and fanciful The Science of Sleep. Like his previous film, Gondry blurs the real and the surreal with a dream-like narrative and frantically colorful and beautiful visuals. Starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Charlotte Gainsbourg, the film follows the dreaming and waking moments of a confused, lovelorn young man as his real and imagined worlds begin to chaotically and desperately collide. Gael Garcia Bernal, continuing to show he is one of the most talented young actors in world cinema, takes a complex and potentially off-putting character and gives him a painfully identifiable core under the quirky affectations. The Science of Sleep makes for a charmingly innovative and romantic film, not to mention a resounding testament to all the amazing things one can do with cardboard.

Stephane (Gael Garcia Bernal) is a dreamer. Having recently moved from Mexico back to France, he works a dead-end job at a calendar company and lives a thoroughly mundane life. But in his dreams, everything takes on new colors. He is empowered to say and do things he doesn't do in reality. He hosts a musical television show about his life, philosophizing about people, memories, and experiences in frantic excitement. His dreams, however, often creep into reality, making it difficult for him and the people around him to figure out what's real and what's not. As he becomes increasingly obsessed with neighbor Stephanie (Charlotte Gainsbourg), his grasp on reality begins to slip away.

After Best Film, Best Screenwriter, and Best Actor awards at the 2006 European Film Awards 2006, The Lives of Others triumphed at the Oscars as well, winning for Best Foreign Film. The film touches upon the sensitive subject of East German secret police, known as the Stasi, and explores the inner struggle of a Stasi agent who is torn between his loyalty to the state and his conscience. The film also documents the cultural scene under the totalitarian regime, when all cultural practitioners were closely monitored. With its tension-filled drama and nuanced characterization, The Lives of Others no doubt deserves its success at the Academy Awards.

Ulrich Muhe, Best Actor winner at the European Film Awards for his performance in this film, stars as Stasi agent Gerd Wiesler. Commissioned by his chief to monitor playwright Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch) and his actress lover Christa-Maria Sieland (Martina Gedeck), he installs microphones all over Dreyman's apartment to record their conversations and anything happening inside. However, Wiesler soon finds out the real reason behind his chief's order to spy on Dreyman, and he starts to empathize with the writer and his girlfriend...

Popular starlet Aragaki Yui (Koizora) cheers her heart out in the delightful zero-to-hero school comedy Cheer Cheer Cheer! (a.k.a. Fure Fure Shojo and Fure Fure Girl) from director Watanabe Kensaku (Loved Gun). Taking after films like Water Boys and Swing Girls, the manga-inspired Cheer Cheer Cheer! is about a bunch of high school misfits who find their groove on a traditional cheer squad. Up-and-coming actors Nagayama Kento (Puzzle), Emoto Tokio (Homeless Chugakusei), Saito Yoshiki (Hinokio), and Sometani Shota (Pandora no Hako) join Aragaki in the bumbling quest to master the art of cheering in all its flag waving, drum beating, and choreographed chanting wonders!

She has a chance to make her fantasies real when she falls for star baseball player and campus hotshot Oshima. Hoping to get closer to her crush, she tries out for the baseball and cheerleading teams, but fails miserably at both. Undeterred, Momoko decides to join the school's ragtag traditional cheer squad, which is on the verge of disbanding. To save the squad and her chance for love, she rallies to recruit new members, but the only people who stick around are other gloomy loners and misfits. Can this cheerless cheer squad get their act together?

Edko Films Ltd. Dream Home (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)
₱ 899.00
After tackling genres like dark comedy and even family melodrama, director Pang Ho Cheung further extends the range of his filmography with the controversial slasher thriller Dream Home, also the explosive debut of 852 Films, founded by actress Josie Ho, actor-musician Conroy Chan, and Andrew Ooi. As co-producer and star, Ho takes on the role of a lifetime as a woman who will do just about anything to get her hands on her dream property. Pang - who co-write the script with Derek Tsang and Jimmy Wan (Isabella) - cleverly breaks the story into fragments, inserting calm scenes of drama in between disturbing sequences of bloody carnage. Filled with disembowelments, slicing, and more ways of using household products than anyone would care to know, the film's extreme violence is so intense that walkouts and faintings have been reported at screenings around the world. However, Dream Home is more than just blood and guts. Chronicling the frustrations of an average Hong Kong citizen trying to own a home in the city's out-of-control real estate market, Dream Home is as much an extremely dark comedy as it is an angry indictment of contemporary Hong Kong.

On a quiet night, a woman breaks into the prestigious No. 1 Victoria Bay residential building and brutally murders its security guard. The ensuing flashbacks reveal that the woman is Sheung (Josie Ho), an average white-collar worker trying to save money for a unit in No. 1 Victoria Bay, despite her father's illness and the lack of support from her married boyfriend (Eason Chan). However, in a city where real estate prices continue to rise at an out-of-control pace, Sheung's opportunity is taken away by her unit's money-hungry owners. Determined to get her dream home, Sheung is forced to secure her home via the most extreme way possible - by murdering those that live near the flat (played by Michelle Ye, Sin Lap Man, Derek Tsang, Phat Chan, and Juno Mak).

This edition features the Hong Kong theatrical cut and comes with deleted scenes.

Comedy king Stephen Chow emphatically reclaimed his throne during the 2016 Lunar New Year period with the blockbuster fantasy romance comedy Mermaid, which broke every Chinese box office record on the books on its way towards becoming the biggest Chinese film of all time. Besides its record-breaking box office, Mermaid garnered positive reviews from audiences and critics alike hailing the return of Stephen Chow-style comedy. Chow's off-the-wall modern-day fairy tale revolves around an innocent mermaid on a mission to assassinate the businessman destroying her home, but the plan falls to the wayside amid side-tickling gags. Starring breakout newcomer Jelly Lin, Deng Chao (The Four), Show Luo (Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons) and Kitty Zhang (CJ7) with cameo appearances from Tsui Hark, Wen Zhang and Kris Wu, the magical tale is filled with Chow's signature nonsensical humor, a heartfelt love story and strong environmental themes.

Rich and rude businessman Liu Xuan (Deng Chao) is raking in the money through a sea reclamation and redevelopment project on the coast of Green Gulf. To secure the environmental seal of approval, he uses a sonar device to drive ocean creatures away from the coast. Unbeknownst to the world, however, Green Gulf is the home of the merpeople. The sonar device has gravely injured the mermaid population and forced what remains of them out of the sea and into an abandoned bunker where they plot to take out Liu Xuan in order to reclaim their home. Their grand plan is to send out young mermaid Shan (Jelly Lin) into the human world to seduce and kill Liu Xuan. With her strange shuffling walk and backwaters naivete, Shan succeeds in attracting Liu Xuan's attention but unexpectedly, they find themselves falling in love with each other.

Note: 3D television, 3D Blu-ray player and 3D glasses are required to view the 3D version of the film.

Following the box office success of 2013's Finding Mr. Right, stars Tang Wei and Wu Xiubo and director Xue Xiaolu come together again for the romantic feature Book of Love, which proved to be another big hit. Spanning three continents, this brand new story of love and letters revolves around two people, half a world apart, serendipitously connected by Helene Hanff's classic novel 84, Charing Cross Road.

Jiao Ye (Tang Wei) is a sassy casino worker in Macau who longs for love, but has her hands full dealing with her father's leftover debt and her own gambling problem. Daniel (Wu Xiubo) is a commitment-averse real estate agent in Los Angeles who specializes in selling properties to wealthy Chinese. These two strangers on opposite sides of the world each happen to acquire a copy of 84, Charing Cross Road, and blame their recent bad luck on the book. On a whim, both Jiao Ye and Daniel decide to get rid of the book by sending it to 84 Charing Cross Road in London. However, Mr. Thomas, the shopkeeper at 84 Charing Cross Road, swaps their books and sends them back. Surprised to receive another copy of the book back, Jiao Ye and Daniel reply through letter and Mr. Thomas forwards their correspondence to each other. Thus begins a pen-pal relationship that starts out testy but comes to hold increasing meaning as they gradually fall in love without ever having met each other.

Isayama Hajime's phenomenally popular manga Attack on Titan arrives in cinemas in 2015 with a massive two-part live-action film directed by Higuchi Shinji (The Sinking of Japan). Rather than being a direct adaptation, the gory fantasy action epic offers an alternate telling of the story set in a dystopian Japan featuring some main characters of the manga as well as newly added characters and shocking original plot elements that go beyond the manga and anime series. Popular young stars Miura Haruma (The Eternal Zero), Mizuhara Kiko (Norwegian Wood) and Hongo Kanata (Gantz) take on the key roles of Eren, Mikasa and Armin. Ishihara Satomi, Miura Takahiro, Sakuraba Nanami, Matsuo Satoru, Misaki Ayame and Takeda Rina play other members of the Survey Corps, while Kunimura Jun is the fearsome commander and Hasegawa Hiroki, a mysterious captain reputed to be the strongest fighter.

One hundred years ago, giant humanoid creatures called Titans mysteriously appeared and started devouring people. In response, humanity constructed large walls to keep out the Titans and enjoyed a century of relative peace and quiet. Born and raised within the walls, rebellious teen Eren (Miura Haruma) longs to see the outside world. One fateful day, he and his friends Mikasa (Mizuhara Kiko) and Armin (Hongo Kanata) are at the wall when a Colossal Titan, taller than ever seen before, suddenly appears and the wall is compromised. Their village is ravaged in a bloody massacre and Mikasa disappears. A few years later, Eren and Armin have joined the military corps tasked with fighting the Titans. Their unit of ragtag greenhorns is sent out into no man's land with the crucial mission of repairing the broken outer wall.

How far is an upstanding cop willing to go to make sure justice is realized? That is the very question the cop played by superstar Andy Lau is faced with in hit action thriller Firestorm. Written and directed by Shaolin scriptwriter Alan Yuen, the riveting story follows the cop's desperate hunt for a gang of dangerous thieves and the struggles of an ex-convict (Gordon Lam) trying to resist the temptation of the crime world. The intense drama in the first two-thirds of the film culminates into an astonishing finale rarely seen in the history of Hong Kong cinema: An explosive shootout set in the busy streets of Hong Kong.

On the surface, Cao Nan (Hu Jun) appears to be an art dealer, but he's really a notorious robber who has been successful at avoiding being charged by the police. Lui (Andy Lau) is one of the upstanding police officers who has been after him. During their latest attempt to catch Cao in the act, Lui's arrest is disrupted by Bong (Gordon Lam), an ex-convict who happens to be Lui's former classmate. Despite the objections of his loving girlfriend (Yao Chen), Bong has returned to working for Lui's gang upon his release from prison. Even though Lui is forced to let Cao Nan go once more, his informant (Philip Keung) has agreed to go undercover in Lui's gang, despite the dangers involved. However, the consequences will drive Lui to the edge as his determination to catch Cao begins to overshadow his moral judgement.

Get ready to swing! From the makers of Shall We Dance? and Waterboys comes Swing Girls, an inspirational zero-to-hero tale about a group of girls who find their rhythm - and then some! Tomoko (Ueno Juri) leads a group of bored girls stuck in remedial summer math class, who decide to ditch their boring teacher (Takenaka Naoto) to deliver lunches to the school brass band.

But the girls' extreme laziness causes the lunches to spoil, and soon nearly the entire brass band gets sick. The remaining member is Takuo (Hiraoka Yuto), who recruits Tomoko's classmate Sekiguchi (Motokariya Yuika) into the band, even though Sekiguchi's musical talents are entirely in question. But Tomoko and the other girls soon follow, partly to get out of math class, and partly because it's their fault that the entire band got sick in the first place! But there's a catch: nobody knows how to play a wind or brass instrument, much to the dismay of Takuo, who proposes that the girls play swing band jazz - and take their act all the way to a battle-of-the-bands finale! Will the girls find a way to swing like tested jazz musicians, or will they discover that maybe math isn't so bad?

Directed by Yaguchi Shinobu (Waterboys), Swing Girls struck a chord with audiences thanks to its feel-good emotions and energetic cast of young girls, and ranked eighth at the Japanese box office for 2004. Like the characters they play, many of the actors were strangers to their instruments when filming began, and learned to play as filming went on! Full of humor, heart, and more than a little satisfying irreverence, Swing Girls is a toe-tapping, crowd-pleasing good time at the movies!

My Little Bride's Moon Geun Young slips on her dancing shoes for The Innocent Steps, a heartwarming motion picture about innocent love and the power of dance! In this second film from director Park Young Hun (Addicted), teen star Moon plays Jang Chae Rin, a young Korean girl from the poor Chinese town of Yanbian. When her dance champion sister bows out of an upcoming national dancing competition in Seoul, Chae Rin poses as her sister and attends the event in her place. One problem: Chae Rin has zero dancing experience!

Co-starring in this winning romance is Park Geon Hyeong (DMZ) who plays her dance partner, Na Young Sae. As a former member of South Korea's national dance team, Young Sae exudes professionalism, refusing to get involved with the film s beautiful heroine. But as their practices continue, a bond between the two soon develops, as she learns not only how to dance from Young Sae, but how to love as well. But what happens when the villainous Jeong Hyeon Su (Yoon Chan) enters the picture and tries to break them apart? Will their budding romance survive?

As with her previous hit film, My Little Bride, Moon Geun Young wins over her audiences with her loveable, wide-eyed charisma, but this time around, she brings with her a level of maturity that might surprise viewers. Critically-acclaimed for his performance in the local stage version of Saturday Night Fever, Park Geon Hyeong acquits himself well as the male lead, sure to win the hearts of female viewers with his dancing skills and winning good looks. Fans of old-fashioned love stories with a contemporary sensibility won't go wrong with The Innocent Steps, an entertaining romance that'll make you want to dance the night away!

Filmmaker Kim Dae Sung, who would go on to helm 2005's Blood Rain, makes his feature length directorial debut with an unconventional love story that boasts an even more unconventional title, Bungee Jumping Of Their Own! The film begins in 1983, when university student Seo In Woo (Lee Byung Hun, from A Bittersweet Life and Everybody Has Secrets) falls in love with In Tae Hee (the late Lee Eun Joo, from Taegukgi and Lover's Concerto) a young woman with whom he shares his umbrella during a rainstorm. Their blossoming relationship is shown incrementally, in ways that accentuate the comedy of their situation, while at the same time conveying a sense that the two share a deep bond, one that will later prove pivotal to the story's outcome.

After learning that In Woo must leave for his compulsory two year service in the military, the film flashes forward seventeen years to find that the young man has now matured into a confident high school teacher. But as the film slowly reveals, he is married not to Tae Hee, but to another woman. It seems Tae Hee died some seventeen years ago, and through a series of clues, In Woo begins to suspect that a teenage boy named Lim Hyeon Bin (Yeo Hyun Soo, from Holiday and Birth of a Man) is the reincarnation of the girl he loved all those many years ago. Despite being a heterosexual, In Woo begins to fall in love with the student, discovering that true love really has no boundaries. A romantic melodrama at its finest, this brave, deceptively transgressive film handles its tricky subject matter with sparkling grace, culminating in a dark finale that is both tragic and transcendent.

Before 2005's Sympathy for Lady Vengeance and 2003's Old Boy, there was Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, filmmaker Park Chan-Wook's startling first installment in what would later become known as the director's "Vengeance Trilogy." Released in 2002, the film kicks off by detailing the plight of Ryu (Shin Ha-Kyun), a green-haired deaf mute who dutifully cares for his ailing elder sister. Without the proper medical attention, however she is bound to die of kidney failure, and since there's no suitable donor in sight, Ryu decides to turn to the black market for help, selling his kidney in exchange for a fresh one for his sister. Sadly, when Ryu awakens from the surgery, he learns that he's been swindled not only out of his life savings, but his kidney as well! Even worse, he soon learns from the doctors that a donor has been found, and that all he needs to do is put up the money for the transplant!

With no legal way to come up with the cash, Ryu and his girlfriend Cha Yeong-Mi (Bae Doo-Na), decide to abduct the daughter of Park Dong-Jin (Song Kang-Ho), a wealthy industrialist and Ryu's former boss. The plan is simple: hold her hostage until Dong-Jin pays the ransom. And things seem to be going smoothly, that is - until a fatal accident turns this "simple plan" into an all-out nightmare for Ryu and Yeong Mi. Little did they expect that their scheme would go so very, very wrong and cause a seemingly normal man to spin out of control, blazing a trail of vengeance from which neither party may survive!

Being invited to Cannes and the Venice Film Festival, The 2002 Korean docudrama "Too Young to Die" shocks all with a real story about an ageing couple Park Chi-gyu and Lee Sun-ye. Their youthfulness, the powerful feelings they cherish for each other and not lastly their unusually active sex life are all explored in this controversial movie without reservation.

Director Park Jin-pyo first met the 73-year-old Park Chi-gyu and his 72-year-old partner Lee Sun-ye while making a TV documentary last year. Struck by their youthfulness, the strength of their feelings for each other and, not least, by their remarkably active sex life, he proposed filming this docu-drama, in which they re-enact their first meeting, their current lives together and the high and low points of their relationship. The film (shot as simply as possible on DV) deliberately avoids going into their personal histories and backgrounds (both have outlived their spouses and both have grandchildren), the better to focus on their intense commitment to each other and their fears of being apart. Only one episode in the film is pure documentary: the sequence at a folk-song competition, which they win with a performance of "The Song of Youth". But all of it feels entirely truthful, including the charmingly uninhibited scenes on the futon.

Poignant, fatalistic, and action-packed, Old Boy is a stunning, gut-wrenching tale full of shocking revelations, captivating imagery, and amazing performances by leads Choi Min Sik (Shiri) and Yoo Ji Tae (One Fine Day). Old Boy won many awards around the world, including the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

The abrasive Oh Dae Soo (Choi Min Sik) is suddenly kidnapped one day and confined in a cell with only a television set. He makes various efforts to escape and even attempts to commit suicide, but all ends in failure. From the television, Dae Soo learns that his wife had been murdered and that he was wanted by the police for the crime. Shocked, grieved, and angry, Dae Soo starts digging a hole in the wall with a spoon.

After 15 years of inexplicable imprisonment, a slightly manic Dae Soo is just as inexplicably released. Returned to an unfamiliar world, he promptly embarks on a bloody raging path of revenge to find the truth behind his imprisonment. He runs into a female sushi chef named Mido who promises to help him unravel all his unsolved questions. His relationship with Mido, however, inadvertently places her in danger. Trapped in a deadly cat-and-mouse game with the mysterious Woo Jin (Yoo Ji Tae), Dae Soo must put everything on the line to find the answers. The truth, however, may not set him free.

Can an ordinary woman leave behind her painful past and face her future?

Celebrated Hong Kong actress Maggie Cheung won the coveted Best Actress Award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival for her harrowing performance in Clean. Cheung's ex-husband Olivier Assayas (who also directed Cheung in Irma Vep) directs, and wrote the script especially for Cheung, who turns in a magnificent performance, and even performs two songs! Co-starring American actor Nick Nolte and French actress Beatrice Dalle, Clean is a moving, beautifully-rendered tale about one wounded woman's struggle for acceptance in a world that simply will not forget.

Emily Wang (Maggie Cheung) is a struggling singer whose life has been a painful pageant of drugs, regrets, and destructive emotions. After her partner Lee (James Johnston) overdoses in a desolate hotel room, Emily must serve a six-month jail sentence, and upon her exit desires to become a new woman. But the world - and those around her - will not soon forget who she was. Emily longs to be reunited with her son Jay (James Dennis), and to finally be a good mother to him, but Lee's parents Albrecht (Nick Nolte) and Rosemary (Martha Henry) are not willing to give up Jay so quickly. Ultimately, Emily must find the faith and strength in herself to finally come Clean, in both body and soul.
