How to Find the Right Baby Formula in the Philippines
Newborn babies can't properly digest baby food yet; that's why parents would opt to feed them with breast milk or infant formula milk. There are hundreds of infant formula brands in the market today, making it difficult to find the right one. But worry not, here are some things to consider that will help narrow your options.
Some formulas contain different ingredients.
Some infant formulas may have more carbohydrates while others may carry more protein. In certain formulas, you can find monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and saturated fat, as well as vitamins, minerals, rice starch, dietary fibers, amino acids, and probiotics.
Different forms of formula milk
You can find three forms of infant formula milk sold in the market today: the ready-to-use formula, the powdered formula, and the liquid concentrate formula. The ready-to-use baby formula milk requires no mixing at all and you can feed it to your baby straight from the packaging upon opening it. Powdered and liquid concentrate formulas both require mixing and are cheaper than the ready-to-use formula.
Know the Benefits
Each type of infant formula provides a different set of benefits to babies. To find the right baby milk formula, first, determine whether your baby is lactose intolerant. If your child is lactose intolerant, consider soy-based milk or any other lactose-free milk formula. Then, decide on which important ingredient that the formula milk needs to have. For example, if your child is deficient in iron, then choose iron-fortified formula milk within their first year.
Know the base ingredients
Generally, there are 8 different types of infant formulas, categorized by base ingredients. These include cow-based formula, soy-based milk, human milk fortifier, organic formula milk, metabolic formula, hydrolyzed formula, and baby milk made specifically for premature babies and those with low birth weight.
Check whether your baby is allergic to the milk formula
Don’t panic if your little one gets an allergic reaction to milk. Their bodies and immune systems are still getting used to the bacteria and stimulants that may be harmless to adults. In this article, you can learn how to pinpoint the symptoms of baby and infant allergies and ways to treat the reaction.
If your family has a history of food allergies, your little one has a higher chance of attaining the same vulnerability as well. If this is the case, there are numbers of ways you can try to prevent an allergic reaction. The most obvious way is to feed your babies carefully. If it’s possible for you, try making your own baby food instead of using store-bought products.
Try to breastfeed your child for at least six months and if you attempt to do so, avoid consuming allergenic foods like eggs, fish, milk, and nuts. Cover your mattresses and pillows with dust-mite-proof and hypoallergenic cases. If you own any pets, try leaving your cats or dogs in a pet hotel for at least a week. Make sure to regularly dust and vacuum your home especially if your floor is carpeted and during pollen seasons.
Treating Baby Allergies
If after all the preventative methods your baby still acquires allergic reactions, there are several ways you can treat the reaction from home. One way you can treat a baby’s allergic reaction is by using a formula. Infant formulas like Nan milk and Blemil act as a replacement for cow’s milk allergy or sensitivity. Dairy allergy symptoms include a change in behavior when eating a certain food, gassiness, eczema, vomiting, and even diarrhea.
Sensitivity towards cow’s milk doesn’t always mean your child is lactose intolerant. Instead of developing sensitivities for lactose, babies with a sensitivity to cow’s milk are triggered by the proteins and the antibodies of the dairy. Depending on the level of susceptibility for cow’s milk, breastfeeding mothers can still consume dairy products in small portions. However, if your child is highly allergic, it’s best to eliminate all sources of dairy proteins and use a replacement allergy formula like Nutramigen.
For 1-year old babies, you can offer whole or reduced-fat (2 percent) cow's milk. Meanwhile, babies under 1 year, should not drink regular cow's milk, although yogurt and cheese can and should be introduced after 6 months of age.
