Givenchy Philippines - The designer who introduced class and elegance
“The dress must follow the body of a woman, not the body following the shape of the dress” – Hubert de Givenchy.
Givenchy is a name that is loved by some of the most iconic stars of the 20th Century from Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor, Jackie Kennedy, Wallis Simpson, to his most famous muse, Audrey Hepburn. The house of Givenchy has become one of the biggest names in the world of fashion for his take on couture and ready to wear fashion. He is the man that thought us what it meant to be a lady and is responsible for what we consider to be classily elegant.
Some would say that when Hubert de Givenchy was born, the world went through an 180˚ change for it was also when elegance and beauty was born. From a very young age, Givenchy always had a strong aspiration to become a significant name in the fashion industry. To make his dream a reality, he went through a training under the guidance of Robert Piguet and became an assistant to Lucian Lelong in 1947. His dream finally came true on February 2nd, 1952 when he opened his own Maison de Couture and his collection was an immediate success.
As a pioneer in many fields, Givenchy is the first designer to introduce a luxury collection of women’s ready-to-wear that that is a blend of elegance with classism with audacity and modernity. After creating magic for the ladies, 1973 was indeed a milestone year for Givenchy, because he entered the realm of menswear, with “Gentleman Givenchy” line. Today, even after retiring and removing himself from everything fashion, the legacy that he created singlehandedly, the label Givenchy continues to amaze the world.
The style marriage of the year
Celebrity/designer are more common that ever but what happens when two legends of style joins forces? Some of the most gorgeous and iconic dresses of all time, that’s what!
When Audrey Hepburn met Hubert de Givenchy, she knew from that instant what she was looking for in a designer and decided to make him her costume designer for as long as he lives. “His clothes are the only clothes in which I am myself”, she said. No matter what was thrown to them, their commitment to each other was unshakable and thanks to his new ideas, Audrey Hepburn was declared a style icon and tastemaker. From the LBD to the invention of the tea-length wedding dress, here are some of their greatest collaboration.
The Oscars, 1954
Audrey won the best actress as Princess Ann in 1953’s Roman Holiday and asked Givenchy to alter one of her costume from the film for the red carpet.
For their very first collaboration, Givenchy’s impressed everyone with his jaw-dropping creation. He designed a whole wardrobe of gorgeous costumes from embroidered organza evening gowns to Hepburn’s second most famous Little Black Dress.
Funny Face, 1957
Givenchy’s next great idea for Audrey was a super-modern tea length wedding dress for Audrey’s fashionable character, Jo Stockton which became an overnight sensation as soon as the movie was out. It was said that the shape of the dress was super famous for wedding back in the 50s.
Love In The Afternoon, 1957
For her character in this movie, Ariane Chavasse, she needed a wardrobe that would see her change from a small cello player to a femme fatale who seduces a dangerous business tycoon. And being the amazing Givenchy that is exactly what he created for her.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s, 1961
Holly Golightly’s little black dress was a sensation and became one of Hollywood’s most famous icons. This look created many different LBDs and the accessories on Audrey’s character, oversized sunnies, strings of pearls and elbow length black silk gloves was the new definition of chic.
How to Steal a Million, 1966
Givenchy was given $30, 000 by Paramount Pictures to design costumes for Audrey’s character. He then did magic by creating the perfect 60’s mod look- little white dresses, round sunglasses and a plethoraof pillbox hats.
Fragrances with an irresistible characters
Givenchy has a collection of perfumes that are known for their tantalizing smell, refined designs with a touch of fantasy and classiness. Givenchy’s perfume started off with the style union between Hepburn and Hubert de Couture. The L’Interdit that was designed for Audrey’s personal was loved by many that she insisted it to be available for all. His journey into the fragrances world was mainly for women but it was impossible to leave the men out of his miraculous touch. Over the years even with many changes, they have remained classic with perfumes such as the Amarige and Xeryus (for the ladies) and Pi and Play Intense (for the gents).
