GoPro Philippines Red Bull Stratos

“I wish you could see what I can see! Sometimes, you have to be really high to see how small you are”. Those were the legendary words said by Felix Baumgartner just moments before he made the highest jump recorded in history, as he stood looking down miles above the earth. Baumgartner made the jump from 24 miles above ground (Stratosphere) from a giant helium balloon, breaking the sound barrier at 834 miles per hour (approximately 1342 km/h). A total of 7 GoPro action cameras strapped to his suit recorded this awesome feat. The GoPro cameras withstood the immense change in pressure in atmosphere as he crossed from the Stratosphere into the Troposphere. Thanks to the advanced technology of the cameras, the rest of the world can witness the amazing stunt in amazing clarity.

Gymkhana and GoPro

Ken Block is currently the world’s most famous drifter. For those who may not know what it is, the art of drifting involves throttling a car to break neck speeds then pulling the handbrake whilst turning the steering. Generally this type stunt driving swings the car’s rear to one side in a sliding motion. Drifting is done by experienced professionals in controlled environments. As part of recording his Gymkhana videos, Ken’s team uses state of the art GoPro cameras to film every angle of the stunts performed. GoPro Youtube channel has many exciting, adrenaline-pumping videos of his performances, often involving a series of challenges the driver has to attempt. Wide angle lenses enable a 180 degree view without having to turn the camera or shift its position.

Popular with Wingsuit Jumpers

GoPro cameras are the ultimate video recording gadget for wingsuit jumpers and base jumpers. Wingsuit jumpers are daredevils who strap on a jumpsuit with flaps located between the hands and legs giving it a winged look. With a parachute on their back, and a GoPro mounted on their head, hands or stomach area, they leap off cliffs or airplanes or buildings and soar like a bird. The GoPro records all the stunning scenery at dizzying altitudes and can withstand the maximum speed of 100 miles per hour. Some point-of-view videos of wingsuit dives will make your palms sweaty due to the clarity and depth of the photography. Much like wingsuit jumpers, GoPro Philippines is the preferred choice of recording equipment among other adrenaline junkies too. Skiers, Parkour athletes, dirt-bikers and surfers particularly love their GoPro cams to capture footage of their skills in action.

Document important moments

Nowadays, anyone can carry along a little GoPro camera mounted to their monopod or strapped to their chest. They may not even remember it’s there. Much like the case of Alex Hennessy, who, along with his friend Mike Graziano spent 5 years travelling to 195 countries. One day, while cycling in Buenos Aires, a guy with a motorbike rudely stopped in front of Alex and demanded that he hand over his backpack. As the event transpired, Alex managed to run away from the mugger but caught the whole incident on his GoPro. Looking back on it, he is thankful that even though he was in danger, yet he came out of it safe. Posting on his Youtube page, he received over 7.3 million views.

GoPro History

Started in 2006, the GoPro camera was initially called Digital Hero which shot VGA video in 10-second bursts without any audio recording. The following year, Digital Hero 3 was out as an upgrade. The upgrade mainly consisted of a 3 megapixel camera with 512x384 video. In 2008, the Digital Hero 5 was out with a 170 degree angle of view, ultra-wide lens and in 2009, the first HD Hero came with true HD video at 30 and 60 frames per second.

With 2010’s Hero HD came the evolution of GoPro to what it is today. GoPro Philippinesrevolutionised the Hero 2 with an 11-megapixel camera, better low-light capability and 1080p video at 30 frames per second. In 2012, Hero 3 was out, but this time users had 3 different colour choices; black, silver or white. Hero 3 was also lighter and smaller in size than its older siblings. Come 2013, Hero 3+ is now 20% smaller and 15% lighter than the previous designs. Unfortunately, the maximum depth underwater was capped at 40 meters as opposed to the Hero 3 at 60 meters. The Hero3+ Black Edition is the most advanced in the market. With 12 megapixel and up to 1080p at 60 frames per second, it could take photos at a rate of 30 photos per second. A Wi-Fi controlled remote also proved handy for those who film away from their camera. The Hero 4 added the must-have feature of touch screens for the more tech-savvy.

Only cameras?

All this talk of GoPro cameras makes you wonder, “Is this all?” Absolutely not!

When using a GoPro, one must have sufficient tools to go along with it. GoPro’s line of accessories range from monopods (selfie stick) to chest and body harnesses for strapping your camera to your body. Removable mounts are also available for you to safely mount your camera on gear such as helmets and bikes.

As GoPro Founder and CEO Nicholas Woodman said, “GoPro helps people capture and share their lives’ most meaningful experiences with others—to celebrate them together. Enabling you to share your life through incredible photos and videos is what we do”. Inevitably, it allows people to communicate their life experiences with one another around the world.
