Adventurous and in search of total creative freedom, two brothers Maurice and Paul Marciano moved to Los Angeles in 1981 from the south of France in pursuit of the American dream. With a new European influenced denim design, the Marciano's stonewashed, slim-fitting jean, the 3-zip Marilyn became their stepping-stone to success. Bloomingdale, a department store chain welcomed the design with a two dozen order and the jeans were sold out in a few hours, despite a $60 sales tag. Guess jeans were well received because during the 1970s, denim fashion was hardly considered as a fashion statement with all the rock ‘n roll hippie trousers were leading the trend. Guess jeans were stone-washed, featuring a softer material and lighter colors than typical denim jeans, body hugging and comfortable, the jeans was an instant hit! The jeans also feature the distinctive Guess triangle on the back pocket.
Following that, the unique and sexy 3-zip Marilyn jeans also became the iconic denims to change people’s perception of denim forever. The Marciano brothers’ designs were timeless, strong, chic and sensuous. Infusing their love of the American West with their European sensibility, the brothers created GUESS?, Inc. The Guess approach was new and it has recreated the future of denim. Today Guess is a worldwide lifestyle brand with a full range of apparel and accessories in over 80 countries.
Its clothing lines, which are designed in classic yet fashionable and upscale styles, include shirts, blouses, jackets, jeans, pants, overalls, dresses, skirts, knitwear and shorts. Its accessories, which complement its clothing lines, include handbags, eyewear, watches, footwear, fragrances, jewellery and leathers, swimwear, and children and infants' clothing.
Fulfilling The Dreams of Many Aspiring Trendsetters
Guess became a symbol of the adventurous, sexy and young lifestyle. The brand invites people to dream with its iconic and timeless advertising campaigns. Guess has since turned unknown faces into famous models. Classic and iconic black and white shots used for its campaigns in the 1980s and 90s have launched many new faces into being successful models, this includes Carla Bruni, Claudia Schiffer, Anna Nicole Smith, Drew Berrymore, Eva Herzigova and the brand’s very first Guess girl Deidre McGuire.
The Guess girls not only made the brand famous, but the brand itself also help them in their respective careers, fulfilling the dreams of these young talented girls. Claudia Schiffer with her distinctive blue eyes, blonde hair and 181cm-tall figure, achieves super model status and become globally famous. Famous for her sultry and seductive looks, the late Anna Nicole Smith also became one of the most recognized poster girl icon of the century. Recently, Guess has been transforming young models like Kate Upton and Charlotte McKinney into successful and iconic symbols of youthful, vibrant culture. They are not merely the faces of Guess as they are expressions of sensual and timeless beauty that redefine the fashion.

Masterminds behind the brand
To re-brand denims to the world, Paul Marciano started a campaign that revolutionized the way denim—and clothing—were sold. Instead of using the typical studio design, Paul brought Guess jeans, and these aspiring models outdoors and used grainy black-and-white photography and alluring poses for the photo shoot. The intriguing ads and sexy Western look quickly became famous not only of the brand itself, but also the models featured in and that started the supermodel trend.
Paul's insightful style has shaped Guess from its birth and his vision also gave birth to the foundation of the Guess image. His vision has created some of the most iconic images in the history of fashion advertising for which Guess advertising has received the industry's greatest honors including the Clio and Designers and Art Directors Awards, further affirming Guess' place in the pop culture scene in America. Although he had no previous advertising experience, Paul Marciano has an intuitive eye for dramatic photography. He has created images that draw viewers to go on an inquisitive journey into the brand’s campaign and develop an emotional response from them. Paul is the current Chief Executive Officer Vice Chairman of The Board and Creative Director of Guess.
