What does Huawei mean?

The meaning behind the first part of the Huawei brand name is a flower which is represented in its logo. The second part of the name brings the meaning of action or achievement. It is claimed that Huawei literally means China’s achievement. The recommended way to pronounce the word is, ‘wah-way’, as said by the founder, Ren Zhengfei.

What started the company’s growing success?

Ren founded the company in 1987 in Shenzhen. Ren started off with a business model mainly of reselling private branch exchange (PBX) switches imported from Hong Kong. In the meantime, the company was reverse-engineering imported switches and investing heavily in research and development to manufacture its own companies. By 1990, Huawei had 500 R&D staff and began commercialization its own PBX switches targeting hotels and small enterprises. The first breakthrough of the company was in 1993, when the C&C08 program controlled telephone switch was launched. At the time, it was the most powerful switch available in China.

It was in 1997 that Huawei won its first overseas contract through providing fixed-line network products to Hutchison Whampoa in Hong Kong. In the same year, the company launched its wireless GSM-based products and eventually expanded to offer CDMA and UMTS. The company then established a research and development centre in Bangladore, India to develop a wide range of telecom software. This then grew into Huawei India. This goes on with research and development centres in Stockholm, Sweden in 2000 and the United States in 2001. By 2002, Huawei’s international market sales reached US$552 million.

Huawei was one of the first to deliver LTE/EPC commercial networks for TeliaSonero in Oslo, Norway in 2009. Through this, the company launched the world’s first end-to-end 100G solution from routers to transmission system to help meet the rapid growth of network traffic and enhance router efficiency and reliability.

In 2013, Huawei was chosen to become the official sponsor of the Jonas Brothers’ 2013 summer tour. In the same year, the company collaborated with local carrier SaskTel to build its HSPA+ and LTE networks. This leaded into SaskTel carrying the new Ascend Y300 smartphone.

Through its Telecom Carrier Networks segment, Huawei provides mobile and fixed softswitches, next-generation home location register, and Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystems (IMS). Huawei also assisted content service providers looking to migrate from copper to fiber with solutions that support xDSL, passive optical network (PON), and next generation PON (NG PON) on a single platform. The company also offers mobile infrastructure, broadband access, and service provider routers and switches (SPRS).

Huawei’s Global Services offers telecommunications operators with equipment to build and operate networks as well as consulting and engineering services to improve operational efficiencies. It includes network integration services like for mobile and fixed networks; assurance services like network safety; and learning services like competency consulting.

Huawei’s Devices segment provides white-label products to content-service providers that include USB modems, wireless modems, and wireless routers for mobile WiFi, embedded modules, fixed wireless terminals, wireless gateways, set-top boxes, mobile handsets, and video products. Upon successful marketing, Huawei’s line-up of smartphones, tablet PCs, and Smartwatch. The most recent products include the U8800, U8860, E220, Ascend, U7519, Huawei Mercury M886, Huawei Honor 6, and U8150. The Huawei P8 was awarded the Best Consumer Smartphone by the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA) on 17 August 2015.
