Intercontinental Video Martial Club
₱ 878.00
Hong Kong film legend Lau Kar Leung puts his particular spin on the Wong Fei Hung legend with Martial Club, a kung-fu-laden fight-fest that audiences are sure to enjoy! Alternatively titled Instructors of Death, the film stars martial arts superstar Gordon Liu Chia Hui (36th Chamber of Shaolin, Heroes of the East) as the aforementioned Chinese folk hero, Wong Fei Hung, a role he previously assayed in 1976's Challenge of the Masters (also directed by Lau Kar Leung). This movie's plot centers on the venerable martial arts school of Wong Kei Ying (Ku Feng) and its contentious relationship with the rival Lu School. At every turn, these unwanted adversaries try to ruin the reputation of Kei Ying's school, much to the frustration of Kei-Ying's son, the legendary hero Wong Fei-Hung. A loveable scamp, Fei-Hung gets involved in all sorts of comical dust-ups with the rival clan as the movie progresses, but when his friend (Mai Te-Lo) is beaten up by Master Shan (Johnny Wang Lung Wei) - a martial arts expert hired by the Lu school ? Fei Hung realizes its time to get serious and avenge his fallen comrade!

Featuring appearances by Kara Hui, Wilson Tong and Hsiao Hou, Martial Club is a superbly choreographed kung fu film from start to finish that puts a new twist on a familiar tale. Consummate Shaw Brothers heavy Johnny Wang Lung Wei even gets to stretch his acting muscles, as he's given a more respectable role that is a far cry from his typical dastardly Manchu characters he has played in the past. Watch in awe as he and Gordon Liu battle in a cleverly choreographed, edge-of-your-seat duel in the film's thrilling climax! If you're looking for old school Hong Kong action, look no further than Martial Club, a definite treasure in the Shaw Brothers' vault!

Intercontinental Video One-Armed Swordsman (1967) (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)
₱ 1,556.00
From the venerable Shaw Brothers studio comes One-Armed Swordsman, the 1967 wuxia film that changed the face of Hong Kong cinema forever! Directed by legendary filmmaker Chang Cheh with action choreography by Lau Ka Leung and Tong Gai, this internationally successful film launched the career of Jimmy Wang Yu, who portrays the iconic title character. When the Golden Sword School finds itself under siege, it is up to a faithful disciple (Guk Fung) to put his life on the line to protect both his master and his fellow students. Tragically, the brave hero is killed in the process, but before he dies, he passes on his precious Broken Sword and convinces Master Qi Rufeng (Ting Fung) to accept his son Fang Gang as his own. The film then flashes forward to follow the adventures of a now grown-up Fang (Jimmy Wang Yu), who has become the top student at the martial arts school. Even so, he is hated by his jealous classmates. One snowy evening, a dejected Fang meets up with a group of students led by the master's spoiled daughter (Pan Yin Tze). When Fang refuses to fight her, the daughter becomes enraged and chops off his arm!

Miraculously, Fang escapes with his life and crosses paths with a pretty country girl named Hsiao Man (Chiao Chiao). She plays nursemaid to the fallen hero and eventually shares her father's half-burned kung fu manual with him as well. With renewed determination, Fang Gang adapts to his handicap, becoming a formidable warrior in his own right. But his newfound mastery of martial arts is challenged when he discovers that the Golden Sword School is once again under attack by the same villains who murdered Fang Gang's father! Will he return to the school to defend it as his father did before him? Or will he retire from the world of martial arts as he promised Hsiao Man? Watch and learn in this classic Shaw Brothers film, which spawned two official sequels, several similar spin-offs, the international team-up picture, Zatoichi Meets the One-Armed Swordsman, and the unofficial sequel One-Armed Swordsmen!

The Shaw Brothers 1967 swordplay masterpiece One-Armed Swordsman is credited for bringing Hong Kong's wuxia cinema into the international limelight. The evil Lung I-Chi (Ku Feng) fears Lei Li's (David Chiang) famous twin swords, so he hatches a plot to frame him and make him cripple his own right arm. Intercontinental Video Assembly (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version) at 1229.00 PHP from YesAsia
Intercontinental Video Assembly (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)
₱ 1,229.00
China's foremost commercial filmmaker Feng Xiaogang lives up to his name with the blockbuster war film Assembly. Pulling in over 23 millian yuan at the domestic box office, Assembly outgunned even The Warlords which was screening concurrently. After years of satirical comedies, Feng's films have gotten progressively bigger in recent years, starting with 2004's A World Without Thieves to 2006's star-studded period piece The Banquet. Based on a novel by Yang Jinyuan, Assembly continues this trend in scale and production, but where The Banquet is glossy, Assembly is gritty, pulling in audiences not with star power, but the magnitude of the war experience. Assembly's realistic battle scenes and brilliant camerawork have earned the film comparisons to Saving Private Ryan, but equally powerful is the human drama that follows the war.

Assembly opens on the battlefield in 1948 during China's Civil War. The Ninth Company of the People's Liberation Army led by brash Captain Gu Zidi (Zhang Hanyu) are sent out to defend a mine from the advancing Kuomintang troops. Given an essentially impossible task, the vastly outnumbered Ninth Company are ordered to hold their positions until they hear the bugle assembly call. But that call never comes, or at least not to the injured ears of Gu, as casualties pile and hope runs dry. Of the 48 members of the Ninth Company, Gu alone survives the devastating defeat, only to find that he has become a forgotten man, written off as missing in action, just like his fallen comrades. Drifting from regiment to regiment, war to war, Gu struggles to keep alive the legacy of the Ninth Company.

Zhang Hanyu from A World Without Thieves gives a commanding performance as a military man whose battle scars follow him on his long, restless search for honor and closure. The faces who make up the Ninth Company include popular Mainland stars Deng Chao and Ren Quan, Blind Shaft lead Wang Baoqiang, and television actor Yuan Wenkang, who gives a notable performance as a timid political officer thrown into war. Acclaimed actor Hu Jun (Lan Yu, Infernal Affairs II) also makes a cameo appearance in Assembly.

Intercontinental Video The Warlords (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)

From He's a Woman, She's a Man to Comrades, Almost a Love Story to Perhaps Love, Peter Chan seems to have perfected the formula for commercial filmmaking. Chan is the rare director who connects with both mainstream audiences and arthouse critics, so it's no surprise that his first stab at the big-budget war epic, The Warlords, has become one of Hong Kong's biggest blockbusters of 2007. Superstars Jet Li, Andy Lau, and Takeshi Kaneshiro star in this grand and gritty tale of war, romance, and brotherhood in 19th-century China. Based on Chang Cheh's Blood Brothers, the film features action choreography from Ching Siu Tung (Hero) and impressive, large-scale battle scenes befitting of the big screen. Jet Li gives the most compelling dramatic performance of his career, departing from his previous image to embody a complex, morally torn character. Also starring acclaimed Mainland actress Xu Jinglei (Confession of Pain), The Warlords is one of the greatest cinematic events of 2007, and Hong Kong has answered its call with record box office numbers.

The Warlords is set during the Taiping Rebellion when the Qing Dynasty was brought to its knees by a militant demagogue who attracted hundreds of thousands of disgruntled insurgents to his cause, thrusting the nation into chaotic infighting and warlordism. Emerging from a field of corpses, Qing General Pang (Jet Li) is the only member of his troop to survive a fatal battle with enemy forces. Wandering through the impoverished land, he encounters young outlaw Jiang (Takeshi Kaneshiro) and ends up joining a gang of bandits led by the brash and brazen Zhao (Andy Lau). Realizing that the only way to survive during such times is to join the fight, Pang, Zhao, and Jiang form their own army and offer their services to the Qing. Bounded by their blood oath, the sworn brothers lay down their lives for victory on the battlefield, but their brotherhood is tested by politics, personal ambition, and rivalry for the hand of Zhao's wife (Xu Jinglei).

In direct contrast with the fantastic adventures created by Studio Ghibli co-founder Miyazaki Hayao, director Takahata Isao uses the animation platform to tell more down-to-earth stories that challenged traditional animation conventions. 1991's Only Yesterday is one of these films. Partly based on the manga by Okamoto Hotaru and Tone Yuko, the drama chronicles an urban woman's literal journey to the countryside away from her troubles in the city, as well as her mental journey back to her carefree childhood days, when things were far simpler. To ensure the animation reflect the realistic style of the story, Only Yesterday was one of the first Japanese animated films to break tradition and have animators draw according to the actors' voice performances.

27-year-old Taeko has lived in Tokyo her whole life. After experiencing the daily grind as a company employee, she decides to go to Yamagata to visit her sister-in-laws to get away from city life. Along the way, Taeko begins to reflect on her life as child, when her biggest worry was being able to go on holidays like her classmates. While her time in Yamagata makes her rethink the priorities in her adult life, she also remembers other childhood events like first love and worrying about her grades. In the process, Taeko begins to wonder whether she had been on the right path all these years

Intercontinental Video Porco Rosso (1992) (Blu-ray) (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version)
₱ 1,380.00
Originally planned as a short film for Japan Airlines, fantasy wartime adventure Porco Rosso eventually became a feature film at the hands of Japanese animation master Miyazaki Hayao. Set in Fascist-ruled Italy in between the two World Wars, Porco Rosso traces a World War I veteran fighter pilot (who happens to look like a pig) and his battles against pirates, the secret police and romantic rivals. Designed as "a manga film for middle-aged men whose brains have been worn out," Porco Rosso has just the right balance of action, comedy and even a dash of romance. The film even broke the box office record Miyazaki had set earlier with Kiki's Delivery Service, becoming the highest grossing theatrical animated film release at the time.

Porco Rosso is a World War I veteran fighter pilot who now flies around the Adriatic Sea as a bounty hunter. When he's not flying on missions, Porco spends his time at the Hotel Adriano, run by good friend Gina. When American pilot Curtis arrives in the area to work for the pirates, he falls in love with Gina, who is obviously in love with Porco. Out of jealousy, Curtis shoots Porco's plane down. Porco manages to drag his damaged plane to Milan for repairs and meets Fio, his mechanic's granddaughter. After Fio proves herself to be a great mechanic and even offers to help Porco escape from the secret police. However, the pilot returns to discover that the pirates are now working for the Fascist government. Curtis also discovers that Porco is still alive and challenges him to a final duel for Gina.

From the studio that brought us Kiki's Delivery Service and Spirited Away comes the classic anime, Grave of the Fireflies. Set in post-war Japan, only a few weeks before the American occupation, director Isao Takahata's powerful anti-war masterpiece centers on the lives of two brave siblings, a fourteen year old boy named Seita and his four year old sister, Setsuko. With their father away serving in the imperial navy and their mother tragically killed in an air raid, the two children are forced to stay with their aunt, a cruel woman who proves to be a poor caregiver for the two children. After quarreling with their aunt, the two siblings leave the city and venture out on their own, eventually taking up residence in a cave-turned-abandoned bomb shelter. With no adults to turn to, the youngsters must depend solely on each other to survive. But it isn't long before their resources are exhausted, and Seita is forced into stealing so he can feed the starving Setsuko. And sadly, it seems his little sister is getting weaker by the moment. These dark times are illuminated only by the light of the fireflies.

Based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Akiyuki Nosaka, this Studio Ghibli-produced film has been universally hailed as a classic since its 1988 release. The emotionally charged motion picture highlights the suffering endured by the innocent victims of war, a stunning portrayal that has resonated with audiences worldwide. Ultimately, Grave of the Fireflies is an unforgettable film, sure to bring even the most jaded audience to tears with its poignant tale of the horrors of war, and the children left behind in its wake.

₱ 1,556.00
Carried by four superstars of the silver screen and winning a cascade of film awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards, Infernal Affairs turned into an exceptional box office blockbuster that re-wrote Hong Kong's movie history! The film spawned two equally popular sequels, and even the Martin Scorsese-directed Hollywood remake The Departed by Martin Scorsese Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon.

The hyper thrilling police-triad undercover story co-directed by Andrew Lau (Young and Dangerous, Storm Riders) and Alan Mak (A War Named Desire) uses the duel betweem opposing moles in the police and the triad as theme, but does not draw on the traditional formula of flying stunts and big budget explosions; yet it succeeds in keeping eyes pinned to the screen from start to finish, even after continuous viewings!

Leading actors Andy Lau and Tony Leung Chiu Wai can be seen in their probably strongest performances to date - one working as a mole in the police department, while the other works as an undercover cop surrounded by deadly triad crooks. They are skillfully backed up by veteran Hong Kong film stars Eric Tsang and Anthony Wong who portray a cunning triad boss and a cool CIB police sergeant, respectively. Also featuring Asian superstars Sammi Cheng, Kelly Chen, Elva Hsiao, Edison Chen, and Shawn Yue in supporting roles Infernal Affairs offers viewers nail-biting suspense from the first minute to the last!

Intercontinental Video Confession Of Pain (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)
₱ 1,229.00
Directors Andrew Lau and Alan Mak and producer Felix Chong, the team behind the remarkably popular Infernal Affairs and Initial D, re-unite to offer Confession of Pain. Mak and Lau once again collaborate with Tony Leung Chiu Wai who stretched his acting prowess to portray a subtle and calculating character. Heartthrob Takeshi Kaneshiro, bringing to live a drunken detective, pairs with the sexy Shu Qi, and rising Mainland actress/director Xu Jinglei ( Letter from an Unknown Woman) plays Tony Leung's wife in the film.

Confession of Pain begins with a beautiful sequence of Hong Kong's night scene as viewers follow Tony Leung and Takeshi Kaneshiro dashing through Hong Kong's urban areas. The omnipresent Victoria Harbor, dazzling under the film's wonderful cinematography, reminds the audience that Confession of Pain may also be a film about the city of Hong Kong. Just like our protagonists, Hong Kong people are struggling to come to terms with memories of their traumatic past. Does confession bring about reconciliation after all the sufferings?

The film devoted more efforts into articulating a Hong Kong story rather than merely creating suspense, which is abundant in Hong Kong's recent wave of cop thrillers. The story starts in 2003 when inspector Bong (Takeshi Kaneshiro) discovers his girlfriend (Emme Wong) has committed suicide. He turns to alcohol for relief and resigns from his job to work as a private detective. Three years later, his old partner Hei (Tony Leung), now a rising star in the police force, learns that his billionaire father-in-law has been ruthlessly murdered. Hei's wife Susan (Xu Jinglei), refusing to believe in the police's version of her father's case, enlists Bong's support to uncover the truth...

Intercontinental Video Jump (2009) (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)
₱ 1,255.00
Produced by Stephen Chow and helmed by Stephen Fung (House of Fury), zero-to-hero dance comedy Jump is famous for being the movie that got shelved and then reshot after original lead actor Edison Chen's fall from grace. What it should be remembered for though is the luminous performance by leading lady Kitty Zhang (CJ7). In the vein of all great rom-com heroines, Zhang is awkward, funny, and thoroughly lovable as a country mouse who travels to the big city to pursue her dancing dreams. Singapore stud Leon Jay Williams (La Robe De Mariee Des Cieux) brings his idol-drama image to the silver screen as the Prince Charming of the story, while Samuel Pang, Fama, and Daniel Wu pitch in supporting and cameo appearances. From the colorful side characters to the inspirational dancing, Jump often recalls the earnest humor and goofy charm of Stephen Chow's underdog comedies, making the film a fun and crowd-pleasing watch from start to finish.

Happy-go-lucky aspiring dancer Phoenix (Kitty Zhang) lives in the countryside with her father, but she's got her eyes set on farther places. Jumping at the chance to move to shiny Shanghai, she makes ends and dreams meet by working as a janitor at an elite dance studio where she picks up dance moves on the sly. Even with her unfailing spirit, things aren't easy for Phoenix working two jobs and putting up with the mockery from city folks. Enter her knight in shining armor, CEO and studio owner Ron (Leon Jay Williams), who sweeps her off her feet and gives her a spot on the dance team. But is simple-hearted Phoenix ready for the complicated turns of big city love and professional dancing?

First created by Shigeno Shuichi in comic form in 1996, and then adapted into a smash hit anime, Initial D has finally been adapted into a live-action motion picture - and it's now available on DVD! Directed by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak (the Infernal Affairs trilogy), the film stars Jay Chou as an 18-year old boy who awakens to the thrill of illegal street racing. Popular Hong Kong actors Edison Chen, Shawn Yue, and Jordan Chan co-star as fellow street racers, and multiple Best Actor award winner Anthony Wong and singer Kenny Bee shore up the cast. Initial D opened in June in Hong Kong to instant blockbuster status, grossing over HK$37 million in just 4 weeks time to become the 2005's top-grossing movie thus far.

Taiwanese pop icon Jay Chou makes his acting debut as Takumi Fuijiwara, a high-school kid who delivers tofu every morning for his father Bunta (Anthony Wong). During his daily delivery, Takumi unknowingly sharpens up his racing skills by speeding through notorious racing spot Mt. Akina, where some of Japan's greatest street racers venture for glory. After Takumi accidentally bests Night Kids leader Takeshi Nakazato (Shawn Yue) on Akina's downhill, he begins to attract the attention of other street racers. But Takumi is more than just another wannabe racer. Years of delivering tofu in his father's Toyota AE86 Trueno have made him an incredibly skilled driver, and not even Takumi really knows just how good he is! With breathtaking car-racing scenes, a hip soundtrack, and an all-star cast, Initial D is the Hong Kong Cinema blockbuster fans have been waiting for!

Intercontinental Video CJ7 (2008) (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)
₱ 1,229.00
Hands down Hong Kong's most anticipated film of 2008, Stephen Chow's sci-fi fantasy CJ7 swept into theaters across Asia in February and topped the box office with record numbers. Four years in the making, CJ7 is Chow's first film since 2004's Kung Fu Hustle and expectations are naturally sky high. Chow's last two films, Kung Fu Hustle and 2001's Shaolin Soccer, are ranked one and two on the all-time list of highest-grossing Hong Kong films, and CJ7 is quickly making its way up the rankings. In the last decade, the King of Comedy has been taking his trademark nonsense comedy, wry humor, and offbeat sentiments into new directions and genres, proving equally popular and effective behind and in front of the camera. CJ7 sees Hong Kong's favorite leading man and director entering a new stage in his inimitable career as he tackles sci-fi with this hilarious and heartwarming family-friendly fantasy feature.

Construction worker Ti (Stephen Chow) lives in a ramshackle shanty and scavenges everything from shoes to toys from the trash dump. Despite his state of abject poverty, the earnest, lesson-spouting Ti is determined to send his son Dicky (Xu Jiao) to a posh private elementary school. Dicky, however, is a lot more interested in playing than studying, and he'd like nothing more than a CJ1 robot dog to show up his bullying classmate. Unable to afford a CJ1, Ti brings home "CJ7", a curious rubbery green ball he found at the dump. His son isn't impressed - until the ball shows its true alien form, morphing into a little green dog whose penchant for mischief gives even Dicky a run for his money.

Stephen Chow has helped launched the careers of many a starlet, and this time CJ7 co-stars Mainland newcomer Kitty Zhang and talented child actress Xu Jiao who genderbends as Chow's son. Chow was so impressed with Xu Jiao's performance, he not only has more plans in store for the budding ingenue, he's adopted her as his goddaughter. Other key comedy players include portly Stephen Chow regular Lam Chi Chung and the cuddly titular alien that serves as another testament to Chow's ability to effectively integrate state-of-the-art CGI into his films.

Intercontinental Video Umizaru Brave Hearts (2012) (VCD) (Hong Kong Version)
₱ 326.00
In the post-credit scene of the first Umizaru film, the filmmakers foreshadowed that rescue diver Senzaki and his team of Sea Monkeys will be on a perilous rescue mission involving a jet plane crashing into Tokyo Bay. That scenario becomes the set up for Brave Hearts Umizaru, the fourth film of the blockbuster film series! Star Ito Hideaki once again dons the wet suit as heroic rescuer Senzaki, returning along with Kato Ai as his long-suffering wife Kanna. However, the focus is being shifted to Sato Ryota's longtime sidekick Yoshioka, whose romance with flight attendant Mika (Naka Riisa) forms the emotional core of the film this time around. As they have done throughout the series, director Hasumi Eichiro and screenwriter Fukuda Yasushi have created another gripping, emotional blockbuster that became one of the top-grossing Japanese films in 2012.

Two years have passed since the oil platform accident in The Last Message. Heroic rescue diver Senzaki Daisuke (Ito Hideaki) and longtime teammate Yoshioka (Sato Ryuta) have since transferred to the front line as members of a special rescue unit. While Senzaki and his wife Kanna (Kato Ai) are about to welcome a second child into their happy family, Yoshioka has also found love with flight attendant Mika (Naka Riisa). One day, Mika's Tokyo-bound flight catches mechanical trouble, putting over 300 souls in danger as the pilots attempt an emergency landing on water. Despite the plane landing safely, Senzaki, Yoshioka and their fellow sea monkeys only have 20 minutes to get everyone out before it sinks into water.

A simple young girl called Sophie is put under a curse by the evil Witch Of The Waste, transforming her into an ugly old woman. Ashamed of her appearance, Sophie deserts her hat shop and heads into the hills in search of a cure. She comes across the strange, yet awesome Moving Castle, the abode of the much-feared magician, Howl. Inside the castle, Sophie befriends the fire demon Calcifer, who can see through the spell and offers to help her return to her natural form.

For his efforts, however, Sophie must help Calcifer break the contract he has with Howl, the details of which he is forbidden to explain. So Sophie assumes the position of the castle's cleaning lady and gets close to the young, handsome Howl, who takes a fancy to the young Sophie, whom he can also see behind her withered facade.

Director Hayao Mayazaki (My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away) has produced another masterpiece from his Studio Ghibli. A beautifully crafted, mostly hand-drawn animated feature, Howl's Moving Castle is the latest in an impressive catalogue of quite simply, some of the best animation ever committed to celluloid.

Intercontinental Video Love In The Buff (2012) (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)
₱ 1,229.00
A story about a love affair between two smokers in Hong Kong's alleyways, 2010's Love in a Puff became one of director Pang Ho Cheung's most popular works due to its enjoyable blend of hilarious foul-mouthed humor and timely commentary on modern relationships. After receiving enthusiastic responses from the film's fans, Pang reunites the team two years later for Love in the Buff, the first sequel in the career of Hong Kong cinema's enfant terrible. Set six months after the end of the first film, Love in the Buff sees Puff lovers Jimmy and Cherie break up in Hong Kong, only to patch things up in Beijing behind the backs of their respective new significant others.

Having relocated to the Chinese capital himself after the production of Puff, Pang once again uses the love story to depict the northward shift of contemporary career-obsessed Hong Kongers, the complications of modern dating, and of course, the beauty of foul-mouthed Cantonese humor. Pang's script (co-written by Luk Yee Sum) pulls off the amazing task of successfully juggling the tastes of both Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese audiences, creating a critically acclaimed box office hit in both regions.

Cosmetics girl Cherie (Miriam Yeung) and ad man Jimmy (Shawn Yue) have been together for six months, and their honeymoon period has ended. After several disagreements, Jimmy decides to move to Beijing to advance his career, causing the two to break up. As fate would have it, Cherie is also assigned to Beijing several months later, and they eventually reunite. Touched by seeing familiar faces in a strange land, Cherie and Jimmy eventually become lovers again. However, Jimmy is now dating gorgeous flight attendant You You (Mini Yang), and Cherie is being courted by Sam (Xu Zheng), a businessman who is clearly more mature and more successful than her ex-boyfriend. As their relationship turns into an affair, the two Hong Kongers now realize that making up is hard to do.

After his ambitious directorial debut, Miyazaki Goro goes back to basic with Studio Ghibli's From Up On Poppy Hill, his first collaboration with his father Miyazaki Hayao, who co-wrote the script. More similar to Whisper of the Heart than Tales of Earthsea, Poppy Hill is a simple schoolyard romance based on a manga by Sayama Tetsuro. Popular young actress Nagasawa Masami (I Wish) provides the voice for the film's heroine Umi, while V6's Okada Junichi plays her romantic interest Shun. In addition to being a sweet love story, Poppy Hill is also about preserving memories in the face of modernity.

Despite the production being disrupted by the March 11 disasters, the Miyazakis kept their promise and released the film on time in cinemas, providing much-needed lighthearted entertainment for Japanese audiences. Poppy Hill eventually became the highest-grossing Japanese film of 2011, and it won the Animation of the Year award at the 35th Japan Academy Prize.

1960s, Yokohama. 17-year-old Umi (Nagasawa Masami) lives in a house on a hilltop next to the sea with her grandmother and other boarders. Everyday, she raises a signal flag for passing ships, and schoolmate Shun (Okada Junichi) notices the flag every morning from his father's tugboat. The two eventually meet in school at a protest rally to protect the old Quarter Latin building, which houses all the interest clubs. Umi ends up joining the cause, getting other female students to help Shun and the other students clean up the building. In the process, Umi and Shun develop feelings for each other. However, Umi discovers a shocking secret from the past that threatens to drive them apart.
