Joy Sales From Here To Prosperity (VCD) (Hong Kong Version) at 348.00 PHP from YesAsia
Joy Sales From Here To Prosperity (VCD) (Hong Kong Version)
₱ 348.00
Richard Ng, possibly the only actor in history who can claim to have upstaged Jackie Chan (Miracles), Sammo Hung (Millionaire's Express), and Michelle Yeoh (Magnificent Warriors) with his comedic mugging, takes center stage in this tongue-in-cheek crime caper from 1986 produced by Sammo Hung and directed by Philip Chan (best known for his appearances in Police Story 3: Supercop and Hard Boiled). Elaborate martial arts stunt work was practically a prerequisite for 1980s Hong Kong cinema, and From Here to Prosperity has its share, but the main attraction is Ng's wacky charm and superb comedic timing. Although he never achieved Stephen Chow-levels of success, the seventy-plus films Ng appeared in throughout the 1980s and 90s constitute one of the greatest legacies of Hong Kong comedy. Set in 1950s Thailand, From Here to Prosperity follows the adventures of a wily detective (Ng) and his cohorts, who are contracted by the daughter of a slain fellow investigator to take revenge on her father's killer, who sells stolen jewels on the black market. In an elaborate insurance fraud scheme, the crook plans the theft of his own merchandise, but Ng and company steal the jewels out from under him. A deal is cut for the return of the priceless diamonds, but Ng is far from through with his grand scheme to make a monkey of his adversary.

Joy Sales Silent Love (VCD) (Hong Kong Version)
₱ 348.00
Produced by Sammo Hung and directed by David Chiang, the 1986 action drama Silent Love marks the film debut proper of Lau Ching Wan who was a television star at the time. For his first big screen leading role, he stars opposite Season Ma (The Owl Vs. Bombo), who garnered a Best Actress nomination at the Hong Kong Film Awards for her performance. Other familiar faces in the cast and crew include Roy Cheung (Infernal Affairs II), Chen Jing (The Island), and Fan Siu Wong (Story of Ricky), as well as Yuen Wah, here serving as action director. The most famous name in the credits though is of course still David Chiang. As adept behind the camera as he is in front, the Shaw Brothers star started directing the odd film here and there in the 1970s, and especially helmed his fair share in the late 80s and early 90s with titles like When East Meets West (1990), Double Fattiness (1988), and Mr. Handsome (1987). A ring of deaf and mute pickpockets led by Heung (Season Ma) gather at a fast food restaurant to celebrate the prison release of Panther (Raymond Wong). There they encounter Kelly Mak (Lau Ching Wan), who also recently completed his prison sentence. When a gang comes storming in to settle scores with Heung, she manages to escape thanks to Mak who steps up to fight the gang. This is only the beginning of the many heartwrenching trials Heung and Mak will have to face together.

John Woo usually limits his onscreen appearances to cameos and bit parts, but he plays a major supporting role as a Rebel from China in this grim 1990 action drama directed by Raymond Lee (Dragon Inn) and based on a story by Ringo Lam (City on Fire). Woo costars with up-and-coming exploitation movie leading man Vincent Wan Yeung Ming (Black Cat in Jail) as a pair of People's Liberation Army deserters who come to the aid of triad-troubled young woman (Cecilia Yip, Swordsman). Although Woo didn't get involved behind the camera on this one, his role is very much in the spirit of his trademark "heroic bloodshed" brand of filmmaking. Admirers of his directorial work, as well as fans of Ringo Lam's gritty storytelling and the ever-radiant Cecilia Yip, will all find something to their liking here. Chen Ming (Wan) is a once-loyal member of the PLA who becomes disillusioned with the Chinese authority after his father is pressured into committing suicide. Along with his brother Kwong (Woo), Ming flees to Hong Kong, where the siblings try to build a new life without attracting too much attention. The Chens find a friend in their new neighbor Mei Ling (Yip), a struggling young woman who's gotten into trouble with the triads. The brothers decide to make a stand against Mei Ling's tormentors, a dangerous move that may cost them their freedom - or worse.

Joy Sales Will Of Iron (VCD) (Hong Kong Version)
₱ 348.00
Veteran Shaw Brothers actor David Chiang directs Will of Iron, a cautionary thriller starring Hong Kong Cinema superstars Jacky Cheung and Maggie Cheung! Four longtime friends (Jacky Cheung, Maggie Cheung, Crystal Kwok and Michael Wong) have weathered the years together, but when Maggie returns from oversea schooling, she discovers that something is wrong with her former friends. Jacky and Crystal are expecting their first child, but Michael suspiciously avoids them, and everyone has differing excuses for the estrangement. Slowly, Maggie uncovers the truth: Jacky is now a pathetic cocaine addict, and Michael is his supplier! This development throws a wrench into Maggie and Michael's romantic reunion, which is further compounded by rising debt, betrayal, and drug-smuggling triads who seek to take advantage of Jacky's addiction. There's only one way all this can end: badly. Will of Iron takes a laudable message and presents it in harrowing cinema fashion, doubling and tripling up its physical blows with emotional ones that will make even the most violence-hardened individual wince reflexively. Over-the-top melodramatic and forcefully powerful, Will of Iron gets its worthy message across...and then some.

Co-written by James Yuen (He's a Woman, She's a Man), the film stars The Wynners' Anthony Chan (who also produces) in a romantic coupling with actress Sandra Ng that is as funny as it is unlikely. When a serial killer appears to be targeting newlyweds in a seaside neighborhood, Yau and Sandra are forced to hold a stakeout posing as newlyweds in the same house. Produced by Jackie Chan, The Shootout is an early-nineties action comedy that brings together many stars of past and present Hong Kong films. Popstar Aaron Kwok is Fai, a relatively young, inexperienced cop who accidentally nabs a member of a thievery gang. However, Fai loses his collar when the gang's vicious boss (Elvis Tsui) infiltrates Police HQ to take down his own comrade! Luckily, the cops bring in two "expert" policemen, Lau (Sean Lau Ching Wan) and Ma (Leung Ka Yan) to help nab the bad guys. Helping their investigation is Min (Fennie Yuen), the club singer to whom Fai is attracted AND the girlfriend to the head bad guy. With topnotch police work - and maybe a little luck - the cops regroup in time for a violent finish. Gritty violence and entertaining, over-the-top action highlight The Shootout, but it's the charismatic stars and quick-footed comedy which keep things amusing.

Kent Cheng, best known abroad as the portly Porky Wing in the Once Upon a Time in China series, directs and stars as the titular Mr. Smart in this situation comedy feature from 1989. Following the success of his critical favorite Why Me? (1985), Kent directed himself in a slew of amiable character set pieces. Character is certainly the name of this film's game; in addition to Kent's ever-radiant Once Upon a Time in China costar Rosamund Kwan, Mr. Smart showcases an array of Hong Kong's finest character actors, including Cheung Kwok Keung (Peking Opera Blues), Shing Fui On (Blue Jean Monster) and Lisa Chiao Chiao (One-Armed Swordsman). Mr. Smart, the self-styled "smartest man in Hong Kong," returns home from a tour of duty as a merchant seaman to find his intellectual crown challenged by a brainy new lodger (Cheung). The two would-be eggheads soon butt heads, but the headstrong men are forced to put their heads together when the family homestead is cited for a zoning violation. With just six months to raise enough money to construct a new residence, everyone chips in to make their home-based short order restaurant a success. But Mr. Smart's know-it-all attitude threatens to derail the business when he begins to meddle in the personal affairs of the customers.

Jackie Chan leaves Hollywood behind and returns as Hong Kong's action hero! Heroic Duo's director Benny Chan comes on board with his expertise on action, drama, and character development to breath new life into an old classic. Welcome a brand new police hero for the 21st century in New Police Story! Jackie has starred in four previous Police Story films: including 1986's Police Story, Police Story II in 1988, Police Story III: Super Cop (1992) and Police Story IV: First Strike (1996). Police Story took home the Best Film and Best Action Choreography at the Hong Kong Film Awards back when it was released, and even though New Police Story does not feature the usual Jackie character, Kevin Chan Ka Kui, any viewer will know this can only be a Jackie Chan Police Story film. The film employs all the techniques Benny Chan is famed for: chaotic situations, large explosions, and detailed characters. The plot is tense and rapid, with one explosive scene following another, yet never loses the human touch. We get to see a rare side of Jackie, as a man wrecked with guilt, as well as a loving husband to the character played by Charlie Young, finally returning to the big screen after a long hiatus. Benny Chan managed to capture the tenderness rarely seen in a tough man like Jackie Chan. Jackie himself also takes on the task of action choreographer with Lee Chi Chung and House of Chan martial artists to create the stunning fight scenes that make a Police Story film so memorable. Heartthrob Daniel Wu takes on the challenging task of playing the main villain, the leader of a gang of wealthy youth who kill cops for fun. Nicholas Tse plays the protege, a young cop who helps Jackie Chan's character get back on his feet.

Joy Sales The Owl VS Bumbo (Hong Kong Version)
₱ 348.00
Classic eighties stars Sammo Hung and George Lam team-up in the delightful buddy comedy Owl vs. Bombo. Also known by the title Owl vs. Dumbo, the film finds the amiable actors as two ex-thieves (named Owl and Bombo, naturally) who team-up when cop Chung (Stanley Fung) blackmails them into acting on his behalf. Neither Owl nor Bombo has ever been fingered for their crimes, but Chung has the goods on both. However, instead of sending them to the big house, he enlists their aid in bringing down a big-time gangster (James Tien) involved in police corruption. Owl vs. Bombo is typical of Hong Kong Cinema's eighties output, meaning it's a melting pot of various genres, including slapstick comedy, martial arts action, and even romance and drama. Director Sammo Hung gives both he and George Lam romantic interests, with Owl (Lam) becoming involved with social worker Miss Yeung, played by Hong Kong superstar Michelle Yeoh, in her very first screen appearance. Bombo (Hung) also romances a social worker, played by singer-actress Deannie Ip. The film also provides surprising drama, as two couples attempt to repair the lives of a group of juvenile delinquents. However, despite that detour into inspirational drama, the film regroups for a martial arts action finale, plus there's even an added treat for Sammo Hung fans: the famously large martial artist engages in a solo dance number! Funny, poignant, and quite surprising, Owl vs. Bombo is classic Hong Kong entertainment.

After starring in the Taiwan idol drama Sweet Relationship, singer-actor Alan Kuo makes his film leading man debut in Fata. The son of the late Blackie Ko, Alan Kuo previously appeared as a child actor in 80s films like My Family and The Legend of Wisely, and starred in the RTHK series Y2K+01, but this is his first time headlining a Hong Kong film. Miki Yeung (Fatal Contact), Po Po (Hidden Track), and Deep Ng (Sparkle in the Dark) make up the rest of the main cast for this uncommon youth drama about hope, redemption, and unexpected turns of Fate. Everyone passes through "Cross Street" at some point or another in their youth, but how many people find their way out? Raised in a single-parent household, Fei (Alan Kuo) has a very close relationship with his mother. When she lands in prison because of her drug dealer boyfriend, Fei tries to get revenge and ends up losing an eye. His burning desire for revenge traps him on Cross Street. Francis Ng returns to the director's chair for the martial arts comedy Tracing Shadow. Again sharing credits with Dancing Lion co-director Marco Mak, Ng also takes the leading role in this rowdy kung-fu sendup about martial arts masters converging on a village to find a lost map. Though the movie is played for laughs, the action is serious business, with impressive martial arts sequences sprinkled throughout. Art direction is top-notch, as is the supporting cast of Jaycee Chan (The Sun Also Rises) and actresses Pace Wu (Marriage with a Fool) and Xie Na (Two Stupid Eggs). Ng also enlists additional star support through a running gag involving celebrity lookalikes. Chaos reigns during the Ming Dynasty as martial artists from both sides of justice rush to the imperial capital to get their hands on a legendary treasure map. After a grand duel at the palace, the map disappears, its whereabouts traced to a small village. Disguised as commoners, five martial artists, including Mongolian warrior Chang (Francis Ng) and ninja Xin (Pace Wu), settle in the village to surreptitiously investigate, but they end up staying for a lot longer than they intended. They appear to be like any other villager, holding shop and regularly getting harassed by spoiled young landlord Xu (Jaycee Chan), but they're actually all secretly jostling to find the lost map. Mayhem breaks out when the map suddenly reappears again.

Billy's attempt at uncovering the evildoer ends in his own death, so revenge falls upon Bobby Lo (Kim Tai Chung), Billy's brother and a fine martial artist in his own right. His search leads him to an underground temple called the "Tower of Death", and nobody - not even a Bruce Lee lookalike played by Yuen Biao - will stay his righteous hand! Producer Tsui Hark takes the directing reins from John Woo for the third and final film in the A Better Tomorrow trilogy. A Better Tomorrow III is a prequel to the earlier films, and features the return of Mark, the suave, righteous killer made popular by actor Chow Yun Fat in the original A Better Tomorrow. Still young and without the seasoning which would make him one of the triad underworld's most fearsome killers, Mark journeys to 1974 Saigon, where he hooks up with tough-as-nails gangster Anita Mui. She teaches him the way of the gun, but her former flame doesn't take kindly to Chow's presence around his ex-girlfriend. Making matters worse is a love triangle involving Chow's cousin Tony Leung Ka Fai, and the approaching fall of Saigon. Tsui Hark serves up slow-motion bullet ballet and wrenching melodrama in classic Better Tomorrow tradition, while managing to put his own unique spin on one of Hong Kong Cinema's most beloved franchises.
