₱ 350.00
Produced by Infernal Affairs director Andrew Lau and helmed by Portland Street Blues director Yip Wai Man, Fate follows four young people at life's crossroads, as anger, loneliness, and love bring them to the same twisting lanes and dark alleys. After starring in the Taiwan idol drama Sweet Relationship, singer-actor Alan Kuo makes his film leading man debut in Fata. The son of the late Blackie Ko, Alan Kuo previously appeared as a child actor in 80s films like My Family and The Legend of Wisely, and starred in the RTHK series Y2K+01, but this is his first time headlining a Hong Kong film. Miki Yeung (Fatal Contact), Po Po (Hidden Track), and Deep Ng (Sparkle in the Dark) make up the rest of the main cast for this uncommon youth drama about hope, redemption, and unexpected turns of Fate.

Everyone passes through "Cross Street" at some point or another in their youth, but how many people find their way out? Raised in a single-parent household, Fei (Alan Kuo) has a very close relationship with his mother. When she lands in prison because of her drug dealer boyfriend, Fei tries to get revenge and ends up losing an eye. His burning desire for revenge traps him on Cross Street. On the basketball court, PS quietly watches over Fei, because she believes that they are the same - lonely people in a cruel world. Suffering from amnesia, Nana, who has only a fleeting image of Fei left in her mind, searches relentlessly for Cross Street. She asks a stranger, King (Deep Ng), to help her find Cross Street, not remembering that King is actually her boyfriend.

A 23-year-old Jackie Chan stars in this martial arts film from 1977 opposite famous kung fu beauty Hsu Feng! Director Lo Wei had previously turned Bruce Lee into an international superstar, and was about to repeat the feat with Jackie. This film was one of the first starring vehicles for the youthful Jackie Chan, who, in addition to his on-screen duty playing the handsome lead, also choreographs the extraordinary fighting sequences.

With a script written by revered wuxia novelist Gu Long, To Kill with Intrigue offers a tight-paced tale of clan rivalry and personal vendetta filled with intriguing twists and turns. The Lei clan is all but massacred by a vengeful Yan, except for young master Feng. Feisty Inspector "Hot Tongue" Ho (Sylvia Chang) leads the Hong Kong cops charged with apprehending King Kong, but luckily the higher-ups call in legendary detective Kodojak (Karl Maka). Spear bald and riotously weird, Kodojak manages to charm Inspector Ho AND persuade King Kong to change his ways and partner up to take down evil international jewel thief White Glove. The "Best Partners" return in Aces Go Places 2, the inevitable and equally-as-entertaining sequel to the original Aces Go Places. It seems that King Kong (Sam Hui) and Kodojak (Karl Maka) made some enemies in the first film, because the second film kicks off with an assassination plot on their lives! The orders come from Henry Kissinger(!), and the assassin is the nefarious Black Glove, who happens to look just like Clint Eastwood AND wears his costume from his famous Spaghetti Westerns, too! Unfazed by their new popularity, King Kong and Kodojak continue to pal around, find romantic misadventures, annoy the returning Inspector "Hot Tongue" Ho (Sylvia Chang), get framed for various crimes, and still regroup in time to rout the bad guys and save the day. Featuring even more slapstick, silliness, and surprising stuntwork, this sequel was an instant success with fans of the first film. It may not make that much sense, but it doesn't have to! It's Aces Go Places 2!

They just keep coming! Aces Go Places 4 brings back the original cast for more silly escapades and wacky buddy comedy - only this time their foe is Toht (Ronald Lacey) from Raiders of the Lost Ark! A nefarious international cartel is after a super soldier formula, the secret of which may lie with King Kong (Sam Hui). Meanwhile, Kodojak (Karl Maka) is still experiencing domestic weirdness with wife "Hot Tongue" Ho (Sylvia Chang) and son Baldy Jr. (Cyrus Wong). However, when the bad guys show up, they take Hot Tongue hostage - meaning King Kong, Kodojak, and the surprisingly athletic Baldy Jr. must head to New Zealand to rescue Hot Tongue and take down Toht. There's even time for King Kong to romance Sally (Sally Yeh), and for Baldy Jr. to perform some surprisingly dangerous-looking stuntwork. Featuring the same sublime actor chemistry and supreme energetic silliness of the previous three films, Aces Go Places 4 is surefire comic fun! Directed by Ringo Lam.

You won't find more essential Hong Kong Cinema than director Tsui Hark's 1983 blockbuster Zu - Warriors From The Magic Mountain, now digitally remastered!

A fantasy epic detailing the plight of ordinary humans thrust into a supernatural battle of the gods, Zu stars Yuen Biao as Ti Ming Chi, a faceless soldier caught in pointless battles between warring Chinese clans. While escaping into the Zu Mountains, Ming Chi meets up with master swordsman Ting Yin (Adam Cheng), and somehow gets dragged on a dangerous quest to seek out the legendary Twin Swords. The swords may be the only weapons capable of stopping an all-consuming ancient evil, that until now has only been held in check by the venerable Long Brows (Sammo Hung). Their journey brings them many challenges and allies, including bumbling monks Hsiao Yu and Yi Chen (Damian Lau and Mang Hoi), and the Countess (Brigitte Lin), the powerful mistress of the Jade Pool Fairy Fortress. But when Ting Yin gets possessed by the evil, it's up to the relatively ordinary Ming Chi and Yi Chen to complete the master's quest, and wield the Twins Swords for the good of all humanity!

Acrobatic action sequences, a host of Hong Kong Cinema stars, and Tsui Hark's infectiously energetic direction has made Zu - Warriors From the Magic Mountain a timeless audience favorite. But it's really the complex, wildly entertaining story and the unprecedented use of special effects that have raised the film to classic Hong Kong Cinema status! Zu would go on to become one of Tsui Hark's signature works, and paved the way for The Legend of Zu, a stunning 2001 sequel that revisited the magical mountain with spectacular, updated digital effects!

Jackie Chan is Asian Hawk, an Indiana Jones-style grave robber who's called into service to discover the secret behind the "Armour of God," a suit of mystical armor reputedly worn by an ancient deity. Asian Hawk takes the job, but must also contend with a former friend (popular singer Alan Tam) who hitches a ride to find his wayward girlfriend Rosamund Kwan - who just so happens to be the ex-girlfriend of Asian Hawk. Armour of God features stunning international locations and some imaginative action set pieces that could only have come from the mind of Jackie Chan. Some of the standout action sequences include an extended fight with four monstrous women, an acrobatic tussle in monastery, and a notoriously dangerous stunt that landed Jackie Chan in the hospital. You can actually see that failed stunt DURING the ending outtakes, which serves as a compelling reminder of Chan's humanity, and unswerving proof of his daredevil genius and unmatched commitment to his art. Armour of God is undoubtedly one of Jackie Chan's signature cinema vehicles.

Chow Yun-Fat is at his charismatic best in Ringo Lam's City on Fire, a deceptively straightforward crime film that was the inspiration for Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs. Chow is an undercover cop assigned to infiltrate a gang of violent thieves, but his submergence in the criminal underworld takes its toll. His isolation from his true identity - and his friendship with thief Danny Lee - leads him to question his duty. What is more important: justice or honor? For Chow, that question proves damning, and his continuing self-torment builds towards an unexpected, explosive climax.

Directed with assurance by Ringo Lam, City on Fire captures the reality of the criminal underworld like few Hong Kong films ever have. Lam's vision of the criminal world is not black-and-white, but a murky grey, and his characters are neither hero nor villain, but irretrievably flawed and undeniably human. Chow Yun-Fat's award-winning performance is powerful and emotionally compelling. In contrast to Tarantino's flashier remake, Ringo Lam's film feels less cinematic, but it ultimately sticks to your gut. Reservoir Dogs brings style, but City on Fire delivers the goods.

Patrick Tam, director of the award-winning After This Our Exile, first made his name for creating artistically acclaimed movies with his daring 1982 work Nomad (starring Leslie Cheung, Cecilia Ip, Pat Ha, Ken Tong). His 1987 movie Final Victory is definitely worth re-visiting. Internationally renowned director Wong Kar Wai, yet to make his directorial debut at the time, co-wrote the script of Final Victory with Patrick Tam and Winnie Yu (now head of Commercial Radio Hong Kong). Also a Hong Kong New Wave director, Tsui Hark stepped down from his director's chair to take up the male lead alongside Eric Tsang, now one of the most representative actors in Hong Kong, and sexy actress Loletta Lee.

Eric Tsang stars as the shy and timid Hung who has to choose between brotherhood and love. Tsui Hark portrays triad gangster Bo, who asks Hung, his younger sworn brother, to take care of his two mistresses, Ping (Margaret Li) and Mimi (Loletta Lee). Shaw Brothers director Chor Yuen helms the eighties laffer Diary of a Big Man, starring the one and only Chow Yun Fat in a riotous comic role! Chow is Chow Ting Fat, a busy businessman who loves two women equally...so he marries them both! Wife one is Joey Wang, a boutique owner who thinks her husband is traveling abroad to the European stock market. Wife two is Sally Yeh, a stewardess who thinks her husband is traveling abroad to the American stock market. And Chow Ting Fat is one seriously stressed out, harried individual who has to juggle two wives AND a career at the same time! He seems to be doing okay...until the two women meet and set up a dinner party to meet the other's spouse! How is Chow Ting Fat going to get out of this one?

Wacky wordplay, dexterous physical comedy and engaging performances help Diary of a Big Man along, but it's Chow Yun Fat's dizzy comic acting that turns heads here! The big man is a comic revelation as he manages to take the somewhat sordid subject of bigamy and make it both harmless and hilarious! Co-starring Waise Lee, Carrie Ng and Kent Cheng, Diary of a Big Man is breezy eighties Hong Kong comedy at its most fun.

Produced by Andrew Lau of Infernal Affairs fame, The Third Eye originally premiered at the 30th Hong Kong International Film Festival, and features a promising young cast, including 2R's Race Wong (Ab-normal Beauty), Wong Yau Nam (Hollywood Hong Kong), Derek Tsang (AV, Isabella), and Joman Chiang (Butterfly). Director Carol Lai (Glass Tears, Floating Landscape) helms this voyeuristic, blood-spattered thriller, about a deadly game of murder at an idyllic motel located in rural Tai O. The Third Eye is only Lai's warm-up for the horror genre, with Naraka 19, her follow-up film starring Twins' Gillian Chung, hitting theaters in September 2007.

Young voyeur Leung (Wong Yau Nam) checks into a rundown rural motel, and quietly installs surveillance equipment. His goal is to broadcast the hopefully seedy goings-on on the Internet, but what he finds are a cast of damaged and potentially dangerous characters who each possess their own secrets. A young writer (Derek Tsang) writes a blood-soaked novel, while Fa (Joman Chiang), the girl he pines for, has a destructive relationship with her invalid father. A barrister (Tony Ho) uses the motel for his weekly affairs, and buys drugs regularly from a seedy dealer (Samuel Pang), who uses his room as a greenhouse. Running the motel is the pretty, emotionally wounded Ka Kei (Race Wong), who suffered her own tragedy years ago when her mother killed herself. Eventually, everyone's sins and secrets are laid bare, not only by Leung's hidden cameras, but by yet another voyeur, whose desires extend beyond pure voyeurism and into multiple murders...

A blood pledge of friendship between gangsters, an international counterfeiting ring, double-crossings, and two-guns-blazing revenge - Fury (1988) has all the elements of classic Hong Kong action cinema. It also sports some very familiar faces for gun-fu fans; Fury's three lead actors would all go on to star in some of the modern masterpieces of the genre. Waise Lee is perhaps best known as the unscrupulous Paul in John Woo's Bullet in the Head, while Philip Chan played Chow Yun Fat's boss in Woo's Hard Boiled, and Michael Wong starred opposite Anthony Wong in Beast Cops.

In Fury, Lee, Chan, and Wong play three fast friends in the Hong Kong underworld overseeing the transfer of counterfeit US dollars to their associates in the Taiwanese mob. Lee's cousin is in charge of arranging the handoff, but he's also a police snitch. The botched operation ends in Wong's arrest and a narrow escape for Lee and Chan. The double-crossing cousin doesn't want any loose ends left alive, however, and goes after Chan and even Wong's wife. Upon his release from prison, Wong reunites with Lee to get some triad-style revenge on the man who set them up.

Of the Shaw Brothers Venoms, Wai Pak never quite reached the fame and popularity of his fellow brethen despite being the best looking of the lot. After a brief Shaw Bros. career most notable for Five Deadly Venoms, he jumped to upstart Golden Harvest in 1979. Wai took supporting roles in kung fu classics like Sammo Hung's Magnificent Butcher and Prodigal Son, as well as Jackie Chan's The Young Master. Proper leading man status for Wai would come in the 1980 kung fu flick The Cheeky Chap and the 1981 supernatural thriller The Phantom Killer. Directed by Lee Wing Cheung, The Cheeky Chap is a rare release that sees Wai Pak taking on a Jackie Chan-style kung fu comedy.

The young and carefree Ma (Wai Pak) is an accomplished martial artist who never looks away when he sees crime and injustice. His pesky habit brings him into dispute with local gangster Au from whom he rescues Ko. Ma also lends a helping hand to Phoenix (Man Suet Yee) and her debt-ridden father, but Phoenix's father eventually dies in the hands of his debtors, the notorious Sha brothers. Incensed by Ma's constant interference, Au and the Sha brothers decide to team up, laying a trap to take him out.

Also known as Send in the Clowns, Cabaret Tears marks a turning point in the prolific career of its star, Sylvia Chang. The Taiwanese-born actress's pretty face had been a familiar feature of the Hong Kong filmscape for the better part of a decade, but with this 1983 melodrama Chang began to take an active role behind the camera as well. In Cabaret Tears, Sylvia plays the younger of two sisters who eke out a living singing in cabaret acts touring run-down venues in Hong Kong. Sensing that their way of life is fast becoming extinct, the elder sister (Chang Shio Yen) pressures her sibling to make a bid for stardom as a lead actress. But Sylvia, convinced that happiness cannot be found on the stage, becomes disenchanted with the showbiz world. Rash and rebellious, Sid (Jaycee Chan) is forced to go into hiding when he's caught in bed with the girlfriend (Yumiko Cheng) of a mob boss (Kenneth Tsang). While his harried triad leader father (Tony Leung Ka Fai) tries to sort things out in Hong Kong, Sid gets exiled to Taiwan where he loafs around angrily making life difficult for henchman Chiu (Roy Cheung). An aspiring musician himself, Sid takes an interest in a group of traditional zen drummers, particularly the young and abrasive Hong Dou (Angelica Lee). Stubborn as ever, he joins the troupe at their back-to-the-basics mountain residence, clashing with their strict regiment of martial arts training and disciplined living. And yet step by step, beat by beat, Sid begins to change...

Jaycee Chan and Angelica Lee, who both underwent special training to rise to their drumming roles, give convincing performances onscreen, although the real percussion show belongs to the performers from Taiwan's U Theatre troupe who, like the roles they portray on screen, train vigorously in the mountains practicing zen drumming, meditation, and martial arts. Director Bi was actually inspired to make this film after he saw a U Theatre performance six years ago. He especially sought out the troupe to learn more about their art and way of living, thus beginning the big screen journey of this rare art and uncommon film.

Underrated action maven Maggie Siu (92' The Legendary La Rose Noire) headlines this female supercop outing from 1992, one of four girls-with-guns flicks director Li Kwok Lap (On Parole, Do Unto the Other) turned out in less than two years. Sting of the Scorpion and its sequel, 1993's Murders Made to Order, aren't nearly as well known as their big sister series In the Line of Duty, but they pack the same tough-girl punch, and Siu's performance as a straight-laced cop driven to a desperate act of vengeance is as gripping as any by Michelle Yeoh or Cynthia Khan.

Maggie, Anthony Wong (Infernal Affairs), and Lester Chan (Eat Drink Man Woman) star as three childhood friends and recent graduates of the Hong Kong police academy who find themselves assigned to the same precinct. Both men have feelings for their female colleague, but Maggie only has eyes for Anthony. Tragedy strikes when the lovers stumble upon a case of police corruption of international proportions and discover none other than their best friend calling the shots. Anthony pays the ultimate price, and Maggie finds herself powerless to take down her corrupt comrade. But she's not about to let a little thing like the law stand in the way of her revenge.

Danny Lee does what Danny Lee does best, playing a tough-as-nails cop who offers the bad guys No Compromise in this taut police drama from 1988. The film's familiar tale of a duty-obsessed policeman who rediscovers the value of family when his work puts his loved ones in jeopardy is nothing new. But strong performances from Lee and a stellar supporting cast that includes Carol Cheng (Her Fatal Ways), Lam Wai (King of Beggars), Pauline Wong (Mr. Vampire) and perennial Danny Lee-nemesis Shing Fui On (Blue Jean Monster) make No Compromise a solid (if predictable) entry in the genre.

Following the murder of a fellow officer at the hands of a criminal couple from Mainland China (Lam and Wong), Officer Lee invests every ounce of his energy into bringing the killers to justice. His obsession soon takes its toll on his home life, but not even threats of divorce from his neglected wife (Cheng) can deter Lee from the fanatical pursuit of his prey. Lee eventually wakes up and realizes what he stands to lose; but it may be too late - when Lam loses his own wife and child during in a bloody police dragnet, he exacts retribution by kidnapping Lee's young son.

Wong Jing strikes again with the slapstick gambling comedy My Wife is a Gambling Maestro! Multi-tasking as director, producer, actor, and most likely writer (credited to "Two Fat Men"), Wong Jing retreads the hallowed God of Gamblers formula with genre regular Nick Cheung, no stranger to gambling films or Wong Jing shtick after appearing in The Conman series. Nick Cheung doesn't deal the cards this time, however, as gambling duties fall to Wong Jing's newest protege Natalie Meng Yao (Beauty and the Seven Beasts). Co-starring comic standby Cheung Tat Ming, martial artist Xing Yu (Kung Fu Hustle), and Stephen Chow regular Chan Kwok Kwan (Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fu Hustle) as the swaggering bad guy, My Wife is a Gambling Maestro is an amusing throwback effort with more than enough action, comedy, and mahjong tiles to entertain fans of the genre.

Gambling queen and martial arts extraordinaire Ying Ying (Natalie Meng) is set to take the crown at the upcoming Asian God of Gamblers championship, but she ends up in deep water when she gets double-crossed by her lover (Samuel Pang) and rival gambler Manu (Chan Kwok Kwan). Suffering from amnesia after her drowning incident, Ying Ying gets rescued by an unlikely knight in shining armor: harried debt-ridden debt collector Jay (Nick Cheung) who suffers abuse left and right in his job and from his cheating girlfriend. Things seem to look up for Jay after he meets Ying Ying, but she has the habit of beating him up whenever he gets too close. The clock is ticking down as Ying Ying settles down to a new life with Jay who happens to hate gambling because of his line of work. Will Ying Ying regain her memory in time for the championship? And what will Jay do when he finds out her true identity?

This action film by director Teddy Yip Wing Cho (Pom Pom Strikes Back) is a 1978 production from Lo Wei, the filmmaker who gave Bruce Lee his international break. Starring charismatic leading man Alan Tang and beauty queen-turned-actress Lam Kin Ming, the film also features some notable talents behind the scene, such as cinematographer Lau Koon Wai (who would direct the horror hit Mr. Vampire) and musician Frankie Chan (who would star in popular action comedies like Carry on Pickpocket).

A mysterious and beautiful woman named Chang Siu Juan (Lam Kin Ming) has worked her way into the upper crust of Hong Kong since she holds the dirty secrets of many of its elite members in her hands. Most of these filthily rich tycoons comply with her demands, but one of them decides to remove this threat for good. Fan-favorite Hong Kong cinema classic Crime Story now digitally remastered! It now comes with special features such as original and newly edited trailers (the latter in English), never-before released footages, and deleted scenes from the Hong Kong theatrical edition. Director Kirk Wong also talks about the story behind this film the interview included in this remastered edition.

Perpetually happy-go-lucky Jackie Chan gets serious in Crime Story, a riveting police action film directed by Kirk Wong (Organized Crime and Triad Bureau). Inspector Eddie Chan (Jackie Chan) is a brilliant, but emotionally troubled cop assigned to protect a real-estate mogul (Law Kar Ying) who's been threatened with kidnapping. Unfortunately, despite Eddie's best efforts, he's unable to prevent the abduction. His emotions nearing a breaking point, Eddie is paired with fellow cop Hung (Kent Cheng) to track the kidnappers to Taiwan, but circumstances seem to be working against them. The investigation gets impeded at every turn, and there may even be some cops working against Eddie...

Based on an actual kidnapping case, Crime Story represents Jackie Chan's most serious work to date. Here, Jackie Chan portrays a hard-boiled, serious cop who's excellent at his job, but cannot take the consequences of his work emotionally. The passion and heartbreak of Eddie Chan are as vital to Crime Story as any of the action sequences, though those happen too. Kirk Wong's experience with the crime genre brings an authentic edge to the film, but it's Jackie Chan's wrenching performance that turns heads. Crime Story earned Jackie Chan a Best Actor Award at the Taiwan Golden Horse Awards, and proves to his fans and non-fans alike that there's more to Jackie Chan than just action.

Popular singer George Lam gets caught in a love triangle in Heart to Hearts, a hit romantic comedy from director Gordon Chan that went on to spawn two sequels! George Lam is Alex, a music producer who moonlights as a choir teacher. He takes a shine to one of his students (Vivian Chow in her debut), but her overprotective mother (the hilarious Carol "Dodo" Cheng) thinks he might be trying to date her daughter. But the misunderstanding gets ironed out, and Alex begins to see the mother instead - which bothers Alex's ex-girlfriend (Rosamund Kwan). Suddenly, the ex wants Alex back, leading to a tug-of-war between the two women and a final, fateful decision from Alex! The chemistry between George Lam and Carol Cheng, and a star-making performance from Vivian Chow highlight Heart to Hearts, but it's the winning combination of comedy, romance, and drama that make this one of the best Hong Kong romantic comedies of the late eighties. Followed by the sequels, Heart Into Hearts and Hearts Against Hearts.

One-Armed Swordsman Jimmy Wang Yu directs and stars in the 1973 period actioner Beach of the War Gods. Loosely inspired by real events, this classic fightfest is set in the late Ming Dynasty when the southern coast of China was constantly under threat by Japanese marauders. Loner swordsman Hsiao Feng arrives in the small coastal town of Litan just as it's under attack, and single-handedly dispels the aggressors with his lightning moves. The fight's far from over, however, as the Japanese vow to return in full force. With time running out, Hsiao Feng mobilizes and trains the villagers to brace for the final bloody battle.

One of the few films Wang Yu made with Golden Harvest, Beach of the War Gods is also one of the most classic from his post-Shaw Brothers era. Rallied by the familiar theme of fighting off the Japanese, the thin story provides a perfect vehicle for pure Wang Yu action. The final segment of the film in particular is a non-stop montage of action set piece after another as the entire village breaks out into an all-out fight zone, capped off with a climactic finale that holds up with the best of Wang's work.

Directed by New Year's comedy master Clifton Ko, City Squeeze (1989) is a hilarious urban comedy about adultery gone wrong. Late icons Jim Wong and Lydia Shum and screen idols Kenny Bee and Elizabeth Lee Mei Fung star in this quintessential 80s comedy. City Squeeze's characters and situations should be plenty familiar with Jim Wong playing the middle-aged man looking for an affair, and Lydia Shum embodying the domineering wife with characteristic zest. Workplace sparks and homelife spars lead to laughs and more laughs as romance comes for some and goes for others!

Wong (Kenny Bee) works in mid-level management at Yau's (Jim Wong) company. His greatest desire is to get recruited by headhunters so he can leave his frustrating job. Yau himself isn't much better off as ultimate power lies in the hands of his portly, wealthy wife (Lydia Shum) whom Yau relied on to finance his company. While on a factory inspection, Yau falls head over heels for beautiful receptionist Fung (Elizabeth Lee). Disgruntled with her job, Fung agrees to date Yau who arranges a position for her at his office. Hong Kong's most prolific and unabashedly commercial director Wong Jing, creator of such gambling classics as God of Gamblers and The Conman, closed out 2006 with Wise Guys Never Die, his latest entry into the genre he knows best. This time, Wong appears both in front of and behind the camera, taking on the film's leading role opposite the busy Nick Cheung (Exiled). Cheung himself is no stranger to gambling films as he starred in the Wong Jing-produced The Conman 2002 a few years ago. Like Wong's previous gambling flicks, Wise Guys Never Die pulls out the card tricks, but plays for much more than laughs. Also featuring Johnnie To-regular Eddie Cheung, actress Alice Chan, and newcomer singer Jolie Chan, the film presents a surprisingly dark and tense psychological drama with more than a few twists in store.

Mild-mannered white-collar convict Nick (Nick Cheung) is having a very tough time in prison until he meets affable veteran conman Teddy (Wong Jing), who takes Nick under his wings. Once out of prison, the two become partners in crime, with Teddy patiently teaching Nick the ropes of the trade. As they lay out the plans for conning gambling den boss Dragon (Eddie Cheung), Nick begins to sense that something is amiss, as Teddy seems to be hiding something from him. Meanwhile, Nick also has designs of his own for Teddy's sultry girlfriend (Alice Chan). The stakes are raised with everyone playing a two-faced game, but who will leave the table the winner?

Directed by Lam Wah Chuen (Runaway Pistol), Nothing is Impossible is a colorful zero-to-hero comedy starring popular comedian Dayo Wong (Fighting to Survive) and Johnnie To regular Cherrie Ying (Throw Down). Young and Dangerous icon Ekin Cheng steps into a new triad role in his latest film, Heavenly Mission. Directed by James Yuen (Crazy N' The City), Heavenly Mission pits Ekin Cheng in a dangerous game of wits and bullets against Alex Fong (One Nite in Mongkok) and Stephen Fung (House of Fury). The film also features an impressively star-studded supporting cast including Julian Cheung (Wo Hu), Eric Kot, Wayne Lai, Wong Yau Nam (Men Suddenly in Black), Niki Chow (Love Battlefield), and Shaw Brothers veteran Di Lung. Entertaining and intriguing, Heavenly Mission is an uncommon triad action drama that engages from beginning to end.

After eight years in Thai prison, legendary triad leader Autumn Yip (Ekin Cheng) returns to Hong Kong, sending the police, the underworld, and the media into frenzy as they try to anticipate his next big move. Teaming up with his former buddies, the high-profile Autumn opens a legitimate company, gives to charity, and appears every bit a mild-mannered, reformed man. Seasoned cop Ming (Alex Fong), however, is convinced that his actions are a front for something illegal. Equally suspicious is aggressive triad boss Ghost (Stephen Fung) who resorts to nefarious tactics to challenge both Autumn and the police.

Those who grew up in Hong Kong in the 1970s definitely remember the Wynners, a band formed by Alan Tam, Kenny Bee, Bennett Pang, Danny Yip, and Anthony Chan. They first dabbled into the film industry with Let's Rock in 1975, and in 1976 they made their second movie as a band, titled Gonna Get You, which was also tailored for them. This comedy's focus basically falls on Alan Tam and Kenny Bee, who are still very active in the entertainment circle today. The story evolves around a drug dealer trying to smuggle narcotics to the States with help of a band's (played by the Wynners, of course) guitar. But Kenny Bee feels there is something fishy about the guitar and uncovers the crime... The success of Let's Rock and Gonna Get You paved the way for more Wynners movies in the 1970s like Making It and Lucky by Chance.

Jimmy Wang Yu (One-Armed Swordsman) portrays General Yue Fei, one of China's greatest national heroes, in this 1971 epic from director Xu Zeng Hong (The Twin Swords). The legend of Yue Fei has been a favorite of the Chinese people since the Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279), and - while the movie takes some liberties with Yue's story - the overall tone is one of extreme reverence. Adding to The Invincible Sword's prestige is the presence of the lovely Xu Feng (A Touch of Zen, Legend of the Mountain). Director King Hu's favorite leading lady, Xu starred in some of the stateliest wuxia movies of all time.

In 1127, Jurchen armies overrun the Chinese capital of Kaifeng, taking the emperor hostage. The Song dynasty reestablishes itself in the south of China under a new monarch and sends General Yue Fei on a campaign to retake the northern territories. A popular leader, brilliant strategist, and loyal servant of the Chinese cause, Yue Fei's mission to crush the Jurchen is all but accomplished when he receives sudden orders to retreat. If Yue Fei were to successfully rescue the former emperor, the new one would be out of a job, and a conspiracy is hatched to abort Yue's campaign and have him arrested for treason. Yue's many followers beg their leader to defy the corrupt new leadership, but the ever loyal general refuses to disobey orders. As Yue awaits execution, his men plan a daring rescue.

Out of the Hong Kong directors of the seventies and eighties, few had a more diversified set of works than Shaw Brothers director Hua Shan. His filmography included such films as the first Chinese sci-fi superhero film The Super Inframan, true crime series The Criminals, and the Leslie Cheung-starring martial arts romance drama Little Dragon Maiden. The 1985 kung fu drama Disciples of Shaolin Temple was one of his last films, and he managed to get the most out of the young martial arts actors at his disposal.

To evade an arranged marriage by his parents, rich kid Cheng Yipeng (Fan Dong Yu) bids farewell to his lover Xiaoqin (He Qing) before running away to the Shaolin Temple. There, he and a group of fellow disciples study Shaolin martial arts under the tutelage of Master Hengde. One day, Youxia (Wang Chi, also the action choreographer for the film), a former disciple who was expelled by the Temple years ago, comes back for revenge. Lazenby had a minor second career in the Far East appearing in a handful of Golden Harvest's internationally marketed kung fu pictures, and A Queen's Ransom reunites him with former costars Jimmy Wang Yu (The Man from Hong Kong) and Angela Mao (Stoner). With renowned Bruce Lee adversary Bolo Yeung (Enter the Dragon) on hand as well, A Queen's Ransom is a veritable who's-who of 1970s grindhouse cinema.

Produced to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Handover, Mr. Cinema is an entertaining and touching look back at over thirty years of Hong Kong history. Anthony Wong stars as Zhou (translated as "left"), a fervent leftist and Chinese cinema fan who works as a projectionist in a Hong Kong movie theater specializing in Mainland cinema. Zhou is a staunch believer in the idealism presented in Mainland films, and uses the motto "all for one, and one for all" to guide his everyday life. But Hong Kong experiences constant change through events as diverse and disastrous as the Asian Financial Crisis and SARS, and Zhou finds it difficult to hold his family together. Despite years of loyalty, his wife (Teresa Mo) is starting to feel neglected, and his materialistic son (Ronald Cheng) has become alienated. As the years roll by, will this old leftist find his way in changing Hong Kong, or will he be left behind?

Director Samson Chiu previously achieved commercial and critical success with the Golden Chicken films, which are similar to Mr. Cinema in that they illuminate recent Hong Kong history through local characters and perspectives. Mr. Cinema delivers a good history lesson, but is very much about character, presenting an affectionate portrait of Hong Kong and its hard working, resilient people. Anthony Wong is wonderful as the aging leftist Zhou, as is Ronald Cheng in a surprising dramatic turn as Chong (translated as "middle"), Zhou's forever-conflicted son. Fine support is turned in by Teresa Mo and Karen Mok (as Chong's life-long sweetheart), and the passing panorama of Hong Kong history is exceptionally touching for anyone with a soft spot for the region. An intelligent and accomplished commercial work, Mr. Cinema is by turns funny, uplifting, and poignant, and is easily one of the most relevant Hong Kong films of 2007.

Back in the eighties, Richard Ng and John Sham teamed up for the Pom Pom movies, a fun and wacky series of action-comedies produced by Sammo Hung. Chou (Richard Ng) and Beethoven (John Sham) are a couple of lovable loser cops investigating a drug lord, but their ineptitude threatens to derail the case. Luckily, smart policewoman Anna (Deannie Ip) has a thing for Chou, and helps them in order to get her man. But even with her expert help, Chou and Beethoven's bumbling could prove to be their undoing! Richard Ng and John Sham previously teamed in the first of the Lucky Stars series, Winners and Sinners, and the Pom Pom films recall those films with its mixture of riotous slapstick, nonsensical humor, and impressive action and stuntwork. Many of Ng and Sham's fellow Lucky Stars even show up in cameos, including Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao, and Jackie Chan himself. While not as popular with the masses as the Lucky Stars series, the Pom Pom movies still have a loyal following, in large part due to the affable everyman charm of comedians Ng and Sham.

The unofficial seventh entry in the seminal In the Line of Duty series of female supercop movies, 1991's Sea Wolves features Cynthia Khan (Blade of Fury, Madam City Hunter) reprising her role as Inspector Yueng, who finds herself up against a crew of modern-day pirates. Khan shares the main spotlight with Simon Yam (Bullet in the Head, Election) as one of the pirates, who's trying to help his Vietnamese friend sneak into Hong Kong and avoid being killed by his bloodthirsty crewmates. Although Yam's dilemma is the main focus of the plot, Khan still gets plenty of opportunities to demonstrate the martial arts acrobatics that made her one of the leading action ladies of the early 1990s.

John (Yam) and Keung (Norman Tsui, Duel to the Death, Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain) are part of a band of seaborne criminals who prey on Vietnamese boat people seeking asylum in Hong Kong. Everyone has to start somewhere, and Hong Kong action cinema maestro John Woo made his feature-length debut in 1973 with The Young Dragons (a.k.a. Farewell Buddy). Woo was only 26 years old then, fresh from his apprenticeship under Shaw Brothers legend Chang Cheh. Serving as the film's martial arts choreographer was another little known name - Jackie Chan. As a sign of the director's hard-hitting action aesthetic to come, The Young Dragons actually never made it to theaters in 1973 because it was deemed too violent by the ratings board. The film eventually ended up on the desk of upstart production company Golden Harvest. Recognizing Woo's talent, Golden Harvest signed the young director and released The Young Dragons in Hong Kong in 1975 after re-editing and a title change.

Set in the chaotic early 1900s, The Young Dragons pits young righteous street lad Chien against a sadistic gangleader, who cruelly plunders from the locals and murders Chien's friends. The film features no big stars, but plenty of familiar names including Shaw Brothers regulars Yu Yeung, Tien Ni, Hu Jien, and Fung Hak On. Gritty, bloody, and action-packed, The Young Dragons did not attract that much attention at the time of release, but the combination of John Woo's direction and Jackie Chan's action choreography now easily makes it a Hong Kong action classic. Fans can try picking out the themes and set pieces that would make appearances in their later films.

Director Chor Yuen, best known abroad for helming high-flying 70s wuxia classics like Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre and Clan of Amazons, first made his name churning out romantic comedies in the 1960s. He returned to his roots in the 80s, although That Enchanting Night (1987) gets a shot-in-the-arm of adrenaline courtesy of its producer, Jackie Chan, and his Stuntmen's Association. Still, action acrobatics take a back seat to affairs of the heart, and That Enchanting Night reminds audiences that the director of Swordsman and Enchantress was also a master of more lighthearted fare such as the comedy classic House of 72 Tenants.

That Enchanting Night chronicles the romantic ups and downs of Ling and Feng, two girls from Macau whose lifelong friendship is put to the test when they both fall for the same guy. Ling eventually wins handsome Wah's affections, much to Feng's chagrin. But when Wah leaves Ling - and leaves her pregnant - Feng forgoes her bitter feelings to help her friend arrange a fake marriage to an impossibly effeminate acquaintance. The film also features veteran actors Danny Lee and Kenneth Tsang as cops, as well as renowned singer Sally Yeh.
