Having just an aquarium and water doesn’t make a comfortable home for your fish. You need to put other aquarium essentials to keep them healthy and the water clean. Before buying, make sure they are quality-made like the aquarium products from Marina. Once you bought everything you need, then it’s time to set up your aquarium. To create a watery paradise for your fish, here are some suggestions you can follow.
Find a proper aquarium size and location
There’s no standard to a proper aquarium size. Small aquariums require a lot of maintenance but the water can be easily changed. Large aquariums, on the other hand, don’t need to be checked from time to time but can be quite heavy. When it comes to where you want to place your aquarium, make sure it’s not near heating and air-conditioning vents as they can heat up the water or make it too cold. Also, keep it away from a window as the water may warm up during summer and frost during the winter. Another tip is to place it somewhere near an electrical outlet so the aeration and filtration systems can be plugged in.
Choose the right aquarium filter
A filter is important to keep the small ecosystem inside the aquarium in the right condition. A decent filter should keep the water in the aquarium safe for fish to live. There are two kinds of filters to choose from.
- Canister Filters - Canisters are best suited for large aquariums. They can be attached outside and can be concealed behind the aquarium. Unlike other filters that allow water to go past the filter mechanism, canisters work by forcing water through the filter. Adding a bio wheel will help increase biological filtration that maintains the water quality in an aquarium.
- Power Filters - Power filters are easy to install as you can hang them at the back of the tank. They are also easy to maintain, making them ideal for small and medium aquariums.
Set up an environment
Once you already found a proper location and set up the filtration system, you can now top the bottom of the aquarium with 2-3 inches of gravel. Then add some decorations like stones, plants, tunnels, and castles. These things not only function as decorations but also as natural habitat for fish to rest. They also serve as a hideaway for fish to avoid aggressive ones in the aquarium.
Provide adequate lighting
You should also provide adequate lighting to keep the plants healthy inside your aquarium. With a LED light from Marina, the plants will thrive; in return, they will keep the water in the aquarium clean and safe for fish to live. Also, make sure not to expose the aquarium with too much lighting as it can cause excessive algae growth. By turning the light on in the morning and off at night, you are providing enough lighting.
Maintain proper temperature.
A temperature of 23 to 28 degrees Celsius is ideal for many aquarium fish. However, during cold months, it is best to submerge a heater to keep the water at its proper temperature. A heater that runs 5 watts per gallon is enough to keep the temperature inside a regular tank within a normal range. If in case the aquarium gets too warm, then you can use a fan to cool it down.
Avoid over cleaning
Many people tend to remove everything when cleaning their aquariums. Doing so eliminates the good bacteria, resulting in a toxic water condition. To clean the aquarium without removing the beneficial bacteria, just wipe down its windows and walls with a clean cloth. Then, siphon the dirt trapped in every nook and cranny in the gravel using a hydro clean tube. The dirty water that is siphoned should be replaced with a new one that has a temperature similar to the water in the aquarium. Also, before putting the new water, don’t forget to neutralize it with chlorine.
Keep watch over your fish
An aquarium is useless without fish swimming around, that’s why it’s essential to keep watch over them. If you see one that appears lethargic or has its fins closed, then possibly it is ill. Also, during feeding, if you see a fish that is not eating, then it might be sick. If you think your fish is having those problems, then go to a pet shop and have it treated. One tip to avoid going to a pet shop and avoid disease from worsening is by identifying and naming your fish so that you can closely monitor their health and figure out the problems early on. In addition, isolate aggressive ones from other fish. That way, they won’t hurt other fish.
