Nike was originally known as Blue Ribbon Sports and was founded by a track athlete from University of Oregon Philip Knight and his coach Bill Bowerman in 1964. Making most of their sales at track meets from Knight’s automobile, BRS was able to sell 1,300 pairs of Onitsuka Tiger’s sports shoes. The company rapidly grew and by 1966, they opened their first BRS retail store in Santa Monica, California. After the ending of their relationship with Onitsuka Tiger, BRS planned to launch its own line of footwear in 1971 featuring the swoosh logo, officially trade marked it in 1974. They also went with the name Nike in 1971, aptly deriving from the name of the Greek goddess of victory.

The logo was designed by graphic designer Carolyn Davidson. At that time, she was still a graphic design student in Portland State University. Davidson was paid $35 for her services. Who would have thought that this $35 design would blow up to become one of the world’s most famous and recognized logos?

The slogan “Just do it” was coined by the founder of Wieden + Kennedy agency, Dan Wieden. As bleak as it may sound, he drew inspiration from Gary Gilmore’s last words before his execution. The “Just do it” campaign proved to be tremendously successful, allowing Nike to increase its share from a mere 18% to 48%. This campaign launched in 1988 was also selected as the top two taglines in the 20th century by the Age, calling it “universal and intensely personal”. This slogan motivates and inspires, pushing people to be the best they can be. The campaign also featured famous athletes such as football stars Ronaldinho and Wayne Rooney, basketball stars Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant as well as tennis players Andre Agassi and Rafael Nadal which further inspired people to aim high and “Just do it”.
