After making a splash at the International Critics' Week with his 2010 debut feature Sandcastle, Singapore director Boo Junfeng returned to the Cannes Film Festival in 2016 with Apprentice, which screened in the Un Certain Regard sidebar. Bringing audiences into the inner workings of a maximum security prison, the introspective drama explores the psyche and conflicts of a young executioner's assistant who is grappling with his choice of profession and his relationship with his seasoned mentor. Soon after transferring to the state's maximum security prison, correctional officer Aiman (Firdaus Rahman) meets and befriends chief executioner Rahim (Wan Hanafi Su). In need of an assistant and a successor, Rahim takes Aiman under his wing as an apprentice. Aiman's new position greatly strains relations with his sister as their own father was executed years ago, but he persists with the training. However, he begins to question his decision when he witnesses firsthand the grueling significance of taking a life and his family background comes to light.

Acclaimed director Iwai Shunji first rose to fame with the hauntingly beautiful Love Letter in 1995. Known as a visual artist, Iwai infuses his films with stunning imagery and a keen sensibility that captures the sentiments of contemporary youth and modern life. Reminiscent of Love Letter, his 1998 film April Story is a visually enrapturing and emotionally rewarding experience, unfolding like a beautiful still life painting that is short in length but rich in colors. Small screen star Matsu Takako (Love Generation) brings alive the quiet, moving tale of a young woman's journey into life. With the coming of spring, Hokkaido native Nireno Uzuki (Matsu Takako) leaves home for Tokyo to begin a new life as a university student. Shy, awkward, and lonely, she slowly adjusts to her new home, finding solace in the local bookstore and joy in the sight of cherry blossoms, fluttering in the wind. During orientation, Uzuki is thrown off by a seemingly simple question - why did she choose this university? She is unable to answer, for her reason is as at once simple and complex, encompassing a world of memories and emotions.

After directing the award-winning Always - Sunset on Third Street series, Yamazaki Takashi goes back even further in time with the time-travel jidaigeki war drama Ballad - Namonaki Koi no Uta. Inspired by an adventure from Crayon Shin-Chan, the story is presented through the eyes of a mischievous young boy, played by Takei Akashi, who time travels back to the Warring States era. SMAP's Kusanagi Tsuyoshi (Sinking of Japan), Aragaki Yui (Koizora), and Osawa Takao (Midnight Eagle) form a fated romantic triangle that leads to feudal war. As can be expected from Yamazaki, special effects are integrated organically into Ballad to re-envision Sengoku era Japan and to create the film's impressive war scenes. General Ijiri of Kasuga (Kusanaga Tsuyoshi) is a fierce warrior whose bravery on the battlefield has earned him the title of "demon". In matters of love, however, he can neither advance nor retreat. Ijiri and Princess Ren (Aragaki Yui) have been in love since their youth, but they are held back by class differences. To protect her clan, Ren acquiesces to marrying powerful warlord Okurai of Kitiganto (Osawa Takao) - until an accidental visitor from the future changes her mind. Enraged by her betrayal, Okurai wages war against Kasuga. This edition also comes with the Cantonese version of the film, featuring the voices of Patrick Tam, Johnson Lee, and Ava

The Bridge at Nogunri (a.k.a. A Little Pond) reveals a shocking hidden chapter of the Korean War. In July 1950 near the village of No Gun Ri, US soldiers, suspecting enemy forces to be in the midst, opened fire on refugees who were heading south to escape the advancing North Korean army. Up to hundreds of innocent civilians were slaughtered in the tragic incident now known as the No Gun Ri Massacre. The Associated Press broke the story in a controversial series of Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reports published in 1999. Directed by Lee Sang Woo, The Bridge at Nogunri offers an emotionally harrowing account of the No Gun Ri massacre from the perspective of the refugees. A large ensemble cast that includes Moon Sung Keun, Jeon Hye Jin, Shin Myung Cheol, Kim Seung Wook, Lee Dae Yeon, Kang Shin Il, Park Won Sang, Moon So Ri, Jeong Seok Yong,Yu Hae Jin, and Song Kang Ho give faces to the lives cruelly lost.

Taiwanese actress Shu Qi leads the cast of the highly anticipated action comedy My Wife is a Gangster 3. Released in 2001, the first My Wife is a Gangster, starring Shin Eun Kyung as a tough female gang leader, was a big hit in Korea, selling over five million tickets. Shin reprised her role for the sequel, My Wife is a Gangster 2, but the film failed to take off at the box office despite a high-profile cameo appearance by Zhang Ziyi. The series was originally meant to continue with Shin and Zhang facing off in a third film, but both actresses eventually opted out, paving the way for a franchise facelift and a much needed narrative kick. My Wife is a Gangster 3 now features a completely new story with a completely new cast. Shu Qi steps into the lead role opposite the always interesting Lee Bum Soo (The City of Violence) and a solid supporting cast, including Oh Ji Ho (Super Rookie), Shaw Brothers actor Ti Lung, Hong Kong action film regular Ken Lo, and actress Hyun Young (The Legend of Seven Cutter) who provides much of the film's laughs. Director Cho Jin Kyo, who also helmed the first installment of the series, approaches the story and his international cast with a refreshing new formula this time around, modeling My Wife is a Gangster 3 into a Roman Holiday action comedy. Chinese-Korean Lim Aryong (Shu Qi) gets sent to South Korea to lay low by her triad leader father (Ti Lung) who is engaged in a bloody power struggle in Hong Kong. In Korea, Aryong meets kindhearted gangster Ki Chul (Lee Bum Soo) who, unaware of her identity, tries to protect her from the legions of thugs hunting her down. Little does he realize, Aryong is more than capable of defending herself.

The first film in Yamada Yoji's acclaimed samurai trilogy, The Twilight Samurai presents a touching cinematic masterpiece about love and agony starring Sanada Hiroyuki (The Last Samurai) and Miyazawa Rie. Yamada Yoji has made every effort to display the complexities of the ancient Japanese culture and the art of sword fighting, which becomes obvious in this monumental movie whose plot is based on three short stories from popular novelist Fujisawa Shuhei. Sanada Hiroyuki plays a swordsman who has to take care of his two daughters after his wife has passed away from lung disease. As he does not engage in drinking and other merry activities, he is sneeringly nicknamed "Twilight Samurai" by his peers. Miyazawa Rie portrays his love interest, a beautiful woman with a strong will from the family of his best friend. The two protagonists become mutually attracted, but fate does not seem to be on their sides.

From director Yamada Yoji (The Twilight Samurai) comes The Hidden Blade (a.k.a. Kakushi Ken Oni no Tsume), another loving depiction of the bygone days of samurai heroism. Nagase Masatoshi (Shark Skin Man & Peach Hip Girl, Pistol Opera) stars as a samurai, whose adherence to his code of honor is tested by the forces around him. It is mid-nineteenth century Japan, and the way of the samurai is fading, as Western influences and corruption are slowly taking hold in Japan. Samurai Katagiri Munezo (Nagase Masatoshi) rescues a woman (Matsu Takako) who's being abused in her married life, but as a silent romance blossoms between them, his corrupt superiors challenge his honor. When the clan orders Katagiri to kill a fellow samurai fallen to corruption, can this man of honor - who has never killed - complete his duty? Like in The Twilight Samurai, Yamada Yoji explores complex themes in his depiction of the simple, yet conflicted life of a man following the strictest moral code. Full of fascinating detail and sublime humanity, The Hidden Blade is a marvelously-realized film that represents the best of what current Japanese cinema has to offer.

After Takeshis' and Glory to the Filmmaker, acclaimed filmmaker Kitano Takeshi completes his idiosyncratic trilogy on artistic rumination and creative crisis with Achilles and Tortoise. More accessible and audience-friendly than his previous two essays, Achilles and the Tortoise is told in three acts, following the art and adventures of an ardent, but middling artist at different stages in his navel-gazing life. Mocking art while making it, Kitano himself painted the film's colorful artwork which delightfully parody the protagonist and modern art. Taking the film's title from Zeno's Achilles and Tortoise paradox positing that the fastest runner can never overtake the slowest, Kitano creates a fascinating character study full of offbeat humor, wry commentary, and self-absorbent reflection. The son of a wealthy businessman, Machisu (Yoshioka Reo) discovers his passion, or perhaps obsession, for art at a young age. After his father's bankruptcy and suicide, Machisu has to move in with his unwelcoming rural relatives, but that doesn't deter him from painting. In his teenage years, Machisu (Yanagi Yurei) engages in various off-the-wall artistic pursuits at art school, and meets his soulmate Sachiko (Aso Kumiko, Suite Dreams). In middle age, Machisu (Kitano Takeshi) and wife Sachiko (Higuchi Kanako, Memories of Tomorrow) stalwartly continue to chase after their lifelong passion and dreams. But at this point, one thing has become painfully clear: Machisu has no talent.

One of the most critically acclaimed directors from the pink film genre, the legendary Wakamatsu Koji continues his critique of extremist ideologies after United Red Army with Caterpillar, an inflammatory indictment of World War II Japan. Intentionally made as an antithesis to right-wing nationalistic films that glorify wartime Japan (he even intentionally set theatrical release dates around Japan on key WWII anniversaries), Wakamatsu presents an unflinchingly pessimistic portrait of the period through the eyes of a soldier's wife. Dealing with tough issues like war crimes and sexual abuse, Caterpillar is anchored by a daring central performance by Terajima Shinobu (The Fallen Angel). Playing the soldier's wife, Terajima has been widely commended for her performance, winning the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin Film Festival and the Best Actress prize at the Japan Academy Awards. After losing his limbs - as well as his hearing and speaking abilities - in World War II, Kyuzo Kurokawa (Shima Onishi) returns home to his long-suffering wife Shigeko (Terajima Shinobu). With her abusive husband revered as a "war god", Shigeko is forced to fulfill her wartime duty by tending to Kyuzo's every need, including sex. As her husband becomes increasingly demanding, Shigeko's resentment for him and her patriotic neighbors also begin to grow as well. Soon, Shigeko learns to express her resentment and rage towards Kyuzo through physical action.

One of the top ten grossing Korean films of all time, the 2009 blockbuster Take Off pulled in over eight million admissions at the box office with the inspiring story of Korea's first Olympic ski jump team. Helmed by Kim Yong Hwa (200 Pounds Beauty) who won Best Director at the 46th Daejong Film Awards and the 30th Blue Dragon Awards, the underdog sports drama revolves around the ragtag formation of Korea's first ski jump team. Acclaimed actor Ha Jung Woo (Chaser) plus Kim Ji Suk (I Hate You But It's Fine), Kim Dong Wook (The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince), Choi Jae Hwan (Truck), and Lee Jae Eung (Bravo, My Life!) form the dream team that won over Korean audiences. Take Off, which integrated extensive CGI to create the film's exciting snowscape and competition scenes, was also recognized for Best Visual Effects at the Daejong Awards. The year is 1996 and the town of Muju is going through massive construction in preparation for a bid to host the 2002 Winter Olympics. The town committee receives notice that there aren't enough athletes representing Korea so they decide to form a ski jump team. Korean-American adoptee and former juniors alpine athlete Bob (Ha Jung Woo), who came to Korea to find his birth mother, gets recruited into Korea's first national ski jump team along with four other amateur athletes. Can this fledgling inexperienced team really make it to the Olympics?

Two competing forces of pretty guys and gals fight each other in the name of love in director Yang Zi's Chase Our Love. The hip ensemble romantic comedy uses pop culture terms like "otaku", "herbivore males", and "3S ladies" (Seventies, Single, Stuck) to reflect the current state of urban romances, and it brings together 40 stars from the Greater China area for this hilarious take on the age-old battle of the sexes. Representing the boys' side are Kenny Bee (Eagle Shooting Heroes), Wong Yau Nam (Poker King), Alex Fong Lik Sun (L For Love, L For Lies), and Patrick Tam Yiu Man (Beast Cops), while Stephy Tang (La Lingerie), Crystal Huang (The Road Less Traveled), Vonnie Lui (Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy), and Chinese top model Zhang Xin Yu represent the girls. For years, the single ladies of the "Single Best Girls" have been at war with the men of the "Alliance of Geeks". Chase Our Love not only depicts the battles between the two groups, but also the complex interconnected web of relationships that develops between its members: A middle-aged otaku (Kenny Bee) that cannot have any physical contact finds himself being able to touch a fashion designer (Zhang Xin Yu). Meanwhile, the Spinsters leader is determined to take down the Otakus' leader (Wong Yau Nam), as she sends out a spy who later meets the Goddess of Geeks (Stephy Tang). Which side will be victorious? And which side will find their true happiness?

Hong Kong's favorite dim-witted piglet with a heart of gold embarks on a brand new adventure in McDull Kung Fu Ding Ding Dong! The third animated McDull film after My Life as McDull and McDull, Prince de la Bun, McDull Kung Fu Ding Ding Dong makes the sojourn to China where things are much different and yet the same for young McDull, now a bumbling martial arts apprentice. Sandra Ng reprises as the voice of McDull's get-go mother Mrs. Mak, while Anthony Wong returns as McDull's kindergarten principal and The Pancakes as teacher Miss Chan. Jim Chim and singer Wan Kwong also lent their distinctive voices to the production. Directed by Brian Tse, who wrote and produced the previous two features, the beautifully animated Kung Fu Ding Ding Dong again champions the bittersweet sentiments and humorous mix of juvenile jokes and spot-on satire that have endeared McDull to not only children but also adults. As the most straightforward and least episodic of the McDull films, Kung Fu Ding Ding Dong is accessible to audiences of all ages and cultures, while still retaining the same distinctly Hong Kong identity and charm Running out of ideas in Hong Kong, Mrs. Mak decides to try her business luck in China. She leaves McDull at a martial arts boarding school on the famous Mt. Wudang, where he makes new friends (that look a lot like his old friends), gets in trouble, and learns Tai Chi very very slowly. Whenever McDull feels discouraged and homesick, a gentle roly-poly giant panda with a funny accent comes out to give him a hand. But will that be enough to get McDull ready for the upcoming martial arts competition?

Spilling buckets of blood and then some more, Tokyo Gore Police has all the gore, exploitation, action, and sickly inventive use of body parts you could possibly ask for. Shiina Eihi from Audition stands tall and beautiful in the midst of the sadistic mayhem as the vengeful monster slayer in a very short skirt. Living up to its billing with eye-popping gore, comically over-the-top perversions, and thoroughly entertaining madness, Tokyo Gore Police is a must-watch for fans of gore and extreme cinema. Sexy katakana-wielding cop Ruka (Shiina Eihi) is part of a special paramilitary squad that maintains order in the tough streets of futuristic Tokyo by squashing violence with ultraviolence and merciless executions. Her latest mission is to hunt down a mad scientist known as the Key Man who has developed a virus that mutates humans into hideous killing machines. These monstrous man-creatures might be able to sprout wacky weapons from their wounds, but they're no match for Ruka who's been on a vengeful bent ever since her father was murdered. The case turns bloody personal when Ruka discovers that Key Man may be linked to her father's death.

Fried Dragon Fish provides an early glimpse of two of the greatest luminaries of contemporary Japanese cinema - acclaimed director Iwai Shunji (Swallowtail Butterfly and All About Lily Chou-Chou) and everyone's favorite actor Asano Tadanobu. Aired in 1993, this offbeat television movie hints of what's to come for both Iwai and Asano. A younger and thinner Asano first caught the critics' eyes with his charismatic performance in Fried Dragon Fish, while Iwai sprinkles the film with the beautiful bursts of vibrant visuals that characterize his later works. Hyperactive databank operator Poo (Yoshimoto Miyoko) takes up detective work when a rare and expensive red dragon fish is stolen. Her investigation leads her to oddball fish collector Natsuro (Asano Tadanobu). She takes an immediate liking to the mysterious Natsuro, but their burgeoning relationship keeps getting interrupted by assassins. It seems that the outwardly mild Natsuro is not only connected to the stolen fish, but also capable of sudden bouts of violence.

Choi Ji Woo, star of the mega-popular TV drama Winter Sonata and the 2004 comedy Everybody Has Secrets, takes on the lead role in The Hole, a pulse-pounding 1997 thriller about love, lies, and sordid family secrets. Alternatively titled The Trap and The Snare, this suspense-filled potboiler focuses its rapt attention on the beautiful Su Jin (Choi Ji Woo), a blushing bride enjoying her seemingly wonderful new life with her devoted, caring husband, Dong Woo (Park Yong Woo, from Musa: The Warrior and Shiri). Everything about Su Jin's life seems absolutely perfect, as she comes to believe that nothing could ever come between her and her husband, that is until the day she meets her brand new mother-in-law, Jin Suk (Yoon So Jung, from The Uprising) who soon takes up residence with the two happy newlyweds. As time passes, Su Jin slowly comes to realize that her husband's relationship with his mother may not seem as innocent as she first thought. Devoting and loving son that Dong Woo is, there's still something horribly creepy about how he and his mother relate to one another. Even worse, Jin Suk despises her new daughter-in-law, believing her to be nothing more than a silly little plaything used to occupy her son's time. While Dong Woo swears that Su Jin is his number one concern, his responsibilities at work begin to keep him away from home, a fact that provides Jin Suk the perfect opportunity to strike! Overcome with rage and jealously, the vindictive mother-in-law hatches a plot to take out Su Jin, a woman she immediately views as a rival for her son's precious affections! A twisted, fatal game breaks out between the two, but who will walk away the winner? The Hole earned Choi Ji Woo Best Newcomer acting prizes at the 21st Golden Film Awards and the 1998 Baek Sang Arts Awards, and is one thriller not to be missed.

Kawage Shunsaku makes his feature length directorial debut with Shining Boy and Little Randy, a bittersweet tale of a young boy and his pet elephant! Known in Japan as Hoshini Natta Shonen, the film stars Yagira Yuya, winner of the Best Actor prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his work in Nobody Knows, as Tetsu, a lonely teenager with an extraordinary home life. Unlike most kids, Tetsu lives on Hokkaido animal ranch run by his mother (Tokiwa Takako) and his stepfather (Takahashi Katsumi), both of whom make their living by renting out their animals for work in television and film. With a stable of creatures that includes everything from dogs and cats to even a chimp, one would think this kind of fantasy life would appeal to a boy like Tetsu, but unfortunately, his family's unusual business becomes a sore point at school, as he is constantly teased by bullies. To liven up their sagging business, the family purchases an elephant, and Tetsu quickly comes to like the new arrival. A second elephant named Randy is soon added to the mix, but quickly proves impossible for Tetsu to take care of. Initially, Tetsu is discouraged, but when he learns of a school in Thailand for elephant riders, he begs his mother to let him enroll. She eventually agrees, and Tetsu sets off for a new life, full of various trials and tribulations. With his folksy, tough-talking grandma (Baisho Mitsuko) and cute schoolmate Emi (Yu Aoi) cheering him on, Tetsu seems ready for this new challenge, but what happens next, no audience member will anticipate! Featuring a shocking twist sure to leave viewers talking about it long after the film is over, Kawage Shunsaku's Shining Boy and Little Randy is a winning, unconventional film that is certain to gain an even larger audience on DVD!

Renowned Korean filmmaker Lee Chang Dong, the director of Green Fish, Peppermint Candy, and Oasis, returns to the director's chair in 2007 with the critically acclaimed Secret Sunshine. This is his fourth film, and his first directorial work since his stint as Minister of Culture and Tourism from 2003 to 2004. In addition to Lee's long-awaited return, Secret Sunshine attracted much attention with its pairing of two of the biggest names in Korean cinema - Song Kang Ho and Jeon Do Yeon, who was named Best Actress at both the 2007 Cannes Film Festival and the 2007 Blue Dragon Film Awards for her amazing performance. Having recently lost her husband, piano teacher Shin Ae (Jeon Do Yeon) moves to her husband's hometown of Milyang. Still in a fragile state of grief, she takes solace in her friendship with rough-voiced, but kind-hearted local Jong Chan (Song Kang Ho). In love with Shin Ae, he follows her around and helps her settle into her new home. Life abandons Shin Ae once more though when her son is abducted and murdered. She then takes refuge in religion and, devoting herself to Christianity, slowly begins to heal. To find closure, she visits her child's murderer in prison to tell him she has forgiven him, but what he says in reply throws her into a new crisis.

In 2009, Overheard broke the box office record for a crime film in China and showed Chinese filmmakers that even police-related crime films can be made in the strict Chinese censorship system. Two years later, producer Derek Yee and writer-directors Alan Mak and Felix Chong (Infernal Affairs) reunite with stars Lau Ching Wan, Louis Koo, and Daniel Wu for Overheard 2, a thematic follow-up with different characters and a different story. The directing duo once again explores the nature of greed in the stock market, but they shift their focus to a hot social topic in Hong Kong: The power of the ultra-wealthy over society. In Mak and Chong's world, these villains' weapons of choice are price gouging and collusion, and their power reaches so far that they can control the entire economy with a few phone calls. After standing on the same side of the law in the first film, the three leading men go head-to-head against each other this time as three players in a complex cat-and-mouse game that will reveal a conspiracy involving these 21st century villains. With various twists and turns along the way, the three men can turn from allies to adversaries at any moment. In addition to the three stars, Overheard 2 also co-stars Huang Yi (The Road Less Traveled), Michelle Ye (Hi, Fidelity), Wilfred Lau (Fire of Conscience), Joman Chiang (The Drunkard), as well as veteran actors like Kenneth Tsang and Wu Fung. With an all-star cast, topical themes, and explosive action sequences (designed by Dion Lam), Overheard 2 was a massive box office hit in both Hong Kong and China, more than doubling the box office gross of its predecessor. Manson (Lau Ching Wan) is a successful stockbroker with powerful, secretive employers. After an automobile accident, Manson discovers that someone has wiretapped into his entire life. An investigation by righteous police officer Jack (Louis Koo) reveals that the man behind this complex surveillance system is Joe (Daniel Wu), an ex-soldier with a dark past. At the same time, Jack also discovers the existence of the Landlords' Club, a group of experienced stock fixers with enormous power over the stock market. What does Joe want with the Landlords' Club, and how is he connected to it?
