Seagate is an American company that is the global leader in providing data storage solutions via their self-developed products that enable everyone to store their data in a secure manner. As our technology advances day by day, so has our need for data storage capabilities; gone are the days where megabytes of data was enough. Today most of us deal with data storages that are massive in size, with hundreds and hundreds of gigabytes of data that are already increasing and transcending into terabytes - suffice to say, we will never have enough storage as we get more and more data.
"Data storage is more than just archiving; it's about providing ways to analyse information, understand patterns and behavior, to re-live experiences and memories. It's about harnessing stored information for growth and innovation." - Seagate, on what data storage is all about.
The Seagate company was the idea of Finish Conner when he approached Al Shugart about developing 5.25-inch hard disk drives (HDDs) which he predicted would expand quickly into the market of data storage. Seagate Technology was known as Shugart Technology when it was incorporated in November 1978. Operations began the following year with Al Shugart, Tom Mitchell, Doug Mahon, Finish Conner, and Syed Iftikar as the co-founders. The name was changed from Shugart to Seagate to avoid a lawsuit from a subsidiary by Al Shugart called Shugart Associates.
The first hard disk drive that they produced was the 5-megabyte ST-506, which was released in 1980. The type of hard disk used turned out to be very popular, which led to the development of the next hard disk drive, the 10-megabyte ST-412. The ST-412 would help Seagate to become a major OEM supplier for the IBM XT, which would be IBM's first computer to contain a hard disk. This OEM contract with IBM helped Seagate to expand fast in their early years and the expanded all the way to the Seagate that we know today.
Seagate makes a variety of different hard disk drives for our data storage. But of course, the most common form of data storage device that we see around is the external hard disk drive. Seagate is one of the most common brands of external hard disk drives around. Look around, the hard disk drive in your friend's bag could very well be either Seagate or another famous brand.
