Paste Philippines: Adhesive Meets Art

Part of most kids’ hobbies entails creativity – creativity that will allow them to craft things with their hands and imagination. That is why art is part of kids’ basic activities in school and it is always encouraged for them to get into it because it promotes cognitive and motor development. Crafts and arts involved cutting, drawing, coloring, and even pasting. The paste is an art material that is more useful in complex art activities like making a collage because aside from its adhesive property it could also provide more texture to an art project.

Pastes are basically adhesives that are almost like glue. The only thing that sets them apart from glue is that they can be mixed with colors, glitters, and other materials that will provide more texture and shade to its natural yet dull color. So, why the need for texture and color?

  • For a more visually pleasing art that involves glue.
  • Aside from visual impact, pastes can also add tangible details to an art.
  • Offers a more fun alternative to a typical adhesive such as glue.

Unlike glue which is only limited to having different variants in color, pastes are more playful because they come not just in different colors but also in different materials. These different types are made to complement different art projects and crafts, adding more color and texture.

Acrylic Molding Paste

This type of paste uses an acrylic as a base that is mixed with a solid material which gives out a thick yet pasty substance. This paste can allow its user to control the text of the surface of the paste when it is applied to an object. This paste is also called modeling paste because it can be molded into any shape and form that you desire on any object with a flat surface like the cover of a book, table, or anything with a flat surface on it. The paste can be added with acrylic paint to add color to the finished product.

Fiber Paste

This paste is opaque and fibrous in texture which does not only work as an adhesive but also as a base for dry media, painting, digital imaging, and watercolors. When it is dry, it looks like a handmade paper and can be skimmed using a wet palette knife to mold a surface smoothly. This is the type that’s ideal for acrylic washes.

Starch Paste

This is the basic type of paste that is commonly used as an adhesive for sheets of paper. It’s simply made from potato starch or other plant starch. This paste is white in color and has a gel-like property which is also viscous in texture. This paste hardens as the moisture evaporate. Starch paste, however, isn’t really as adhesive as a glue, that is why it only works best for sheets of paper.
