5 Beauty Tips Before Heading to the Beach this Summer

10 May 2018 | MJ Mendoza

Filipinos are lucky. Most foreigners spend numerous dollars just so they could have a taste of tropical paradise. Being an archipelago, the Philippines is blessed with the most beautiful beaches that could rival Phuket, Bali or even Langkawi. In just a few hours (or even minutes for some), the most pristine beaches are right in front of your doorstep.

If you don’t have plans to go to the beach right now, then what are you even doing? Go out there and bask in the summer sun! And, don’t forget to bring your beauty essentials with you. Here are some beauty tips that you should know about before you experience the sun and sand.

Sunscreen, sunscreen, and more sunscreen!

If you don’t already wear sunscreen on a daily basis, you should this summer especially if you’re planning to hit the beach. Harmful UVA and UVB from the sun could hasten the aging process. Furthermore, if your skin is under treatment for acne or dry skin, these harmful sun rays could kill any new cells trying to renew your skin.

The first thing you would look at when looking for sunscreen is the SPF. Remember that the SPF is the amount of time you can stay under the sun without getting burned. So, an SPF30 sunscreen will last around ~30 minutes. Sunscreens wear off quite fast so you need to apply it as often as you need to. Furthermore, make sure that the sunscreen also covers a broad spectrum of sunlight.

Always moisturize

Besides the sunscreen, one thing that you should never forget to wear (besides your bikini) is a moisturizer. Even underneath a pancake of makeup, always moisturize during the summer. It helps create a barrier against pollution, dust, bacteria, and it also helps keep the moisture in. This is really important because prolonged exposure to the sun can dehydrate your skin cells, more so if you already have dry skin to begin with. So, underneath that makeup and sunscreen, make sure that you apply a decent amount of moisturizer for your day at the beach.

Have aloe vera gel in hand

Aloe vera has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years. Known to have anti-inflammatory and healing properties, this is your weapon against sunburn or any kind of burn for that matter. It calms, soothes, and re-hydrates your skin and you are less likely to experience that dreadful scaly dryness. Moreover, aloe also contains antioxidants that repair damage and minimizes free radicals on your skin. We highly recommend Nature Republic Aloe Vera Gel or the same product from the Face Shop!

Wear waterproof makeup

Slay even while you’re swimming with a bunch of waterproof makeup! Seriously, these products come a long way. Even with just simple products like brows, eyeliner, matte lipstick, and throw in a little bit of mascara and cream eyeshadow would do. It doesn’t always have to be about swimming. Waterproof makeup is also great for withstanding heavy sweat so that you can snatch that #VitaminSea look.

Always carry blotting paper

With temperatures averaging at 30 degrees, your skin is going to be oily, sweaty, and your makeup is going to pancake like crazy (if you’re going to wear one). Like with most things in life, the best solution always comes in the simplest and smallest packages - blotting paper. Whenever you are in dire need of a retouch, this would help absorb the oil on your skin, enabling you to touch it up nicely. However, you don’t need to wear a full face to use it! For our non-makeup-queens out there, it can also do the same thing!
