Data (collected as of November 22, 2019) from Google Trends show that between 2016 and 2019, search interest on Singles’ Day has grown by 97%. Hence, it comes as no surprise that the average basket size of each consumer this year is 10% more than last year’s.
iPrice Group, a Malaysian-based information aggregator platform, gathered and analyzed data from more than 100 online merchants & more than 35 million products in the Philippines to reveal the amount spent during Singles’ Day and the product categories Filipinos splurged on the most.
5 Interesting Insights from our Singles’ Day Analysis
1. Filipino Consumers Spent an Average of PHP 1,217 on 11.11
Filipinos spent PHP1,217 in one day, which is PHP628 more than the average household expenditure per day, as per the latest statistics from the Philippine Statistical Authority (PSA). That’s more than a thousand pesos on just consumer products alone in one day! The average basket size this year also grew by 10% as more and more Filipinos are starting to shift to online shopping.
2. Filipinos Still Spend the Most on Sports & Outdoor Items and Electronics
Filipinos splurged more on Sports & Outdoor and Electronics than any other category for two years in a row now. This year, the average amount a Filipino spent is PHP1,585 on Sports & Outdoor items, and PHP1,352 on Electronics. This could be due to the growing number of emerging gyms and outdoor amenities in the country. Surprisingly, Filipinos spent more on sports bags and fitness-related food supplements than gaming items and gadgets.
3. Automotive and Kids & Toys Categories had the Highest Surge
Interestingly enough, Automotive items had an 83% growth in purchases compared to last year, amounting to PHP1,124 from PHP615. Most of the amount was spent on car and motorcycle accessories, which makes sense because the Philippines has such a high number of vehicle owners. Kids & Toys, on the other hand, grew by 52%, amounting to PHP1,071 from PHP705. Much of this growth is attributed to the purchase of gifts and baby gear items under this category. Overall, both Automotive and Kids & Toys contributed the most to the growth of the average basket size this year.
4. Home & Living and Fashion items increase while Health & Beauty items slightly decrease
Both Home & Living and Fashion items had 25% more purchases than last year. Filipinos spent PHP1,177 on Home & Living items and PHP1,122 on Fashion items during Singles’ Day alone. However, Health & Beauty items had a 7% decrease in purchases.
5. 12.12 May Even be Bigger Than 11.11
Google Trends recorded (as of November 22, 2019) that the 12.12 sale had a 12% higher interest search than Singles’ Day last year, which can be an indication of how big 12.12 might be this year. Singles’ Day 2019 has even more interest searches than 12.12 2018, which goes to show the potential interest in this year’s 12.12 sale.
