Five Hello Kitty Collectibles that could be Worth More than your House

02 August 2017 | MJ Mendoza

An icon of Japanese animation and pop culture, Hello Kitty is one of the world's most recognized characters and nobody can tell otherwise. Created in 1974 by Yuko Shimizu, Hello Kitty first appeared in a vinyl coin purse between a milk bottle and a fish bowl. Yuko drew inspiration for Hello Kitty from Lewis Caroll's novel Through the Looking Glass wherein early in the novel, Alice was playing with her cat Kitty.

From then on, this famous Japanese cat has starred in various TV shows, toys, clothing, and a bunch of other collectibles that we all know and love. The character has become so popular that rare and super-expensive collectibles have surfaced and would probably cost more than a house or a car. Totaling up to $450,000, you would not believe how expensive these Hello Kitty collectibles are!

Bedazzled Hello Kitty, $167,000

Created in 2009 for Hello Kitty's 35th anniversary, this jewellery-clad Hello Kitty doll was made to commemorate that event. Partnering with renowned Japanese jeweler I.K., the powerhouse created a stunning piece made from platinum and precious gems namely 1,939 pieces of white topaz, 403 pink sapphires, a pair of spinel for her eyes, citrine for her nose, and a 1.027-carat diamond for her bow. To own this kitty, you need to shell out as much as $167,000 or approximately PHP8.5 million.

Platinum Hello Kitty Figurine, $163,000

Considered as one of the most expensive Hello Kitty figurines ever sold, this Hello Kitty figurine is made from platinum standing 3.8cm x 5.6 cm and weighing 590g. Its bow is also encrusted with diamond, ruby, pink sapphire, blue topaz, and amethyst, selling up to $163,00 or PHP 8.3 million (definitely worth a house). It was sold in a Tokyo department store in 2006.

This Hello Kitty Clutch Bag, $100,000

Costing more than just your average luxury brand, this Hello Kitty clutch bag certainly screams boujee. Auctioned off in 2012, this bag is covered entirely in Swarovski crystals that would leave any luxury-brand connoisseur breathless. Proceeds from the auction went to the Japanese Red Cross as a work of charity towards Earthquake victims that struck in 2011. Today, you can grab this work of art from Swarovski for $675.

Hello Kitty Dog House, $32,000

With a twist of irony, one of the most expensive Hello Kitty items is a dog house. Made in 2007 and sold at the same Tokyo department store where you can get the platinum Hello Kitty, this dog house is tailor-fit for small dogs but for a larger sum. It is made from 7,600 Swarovski crystal beads totaling up to $32,000 or PHP 1.6 million.

Hello Kitty Guitar, $20,000

Another entry that you can get from the same department store as the dog house and the platinum figurine, this Hello Kitty guitar is a collaboration with American guitar maker Fender. This Hello Kitty guitar features a Stratocaster body in black with Hello Kitty's face at the center. It was created in 2008 and can be purchased for a whopping amount of $20,000 or around PHP 1 million.
