Xiaomi Mi Max 2 New Color Variant Now Available In Hong Kong
Last month, China’s biggest smartphone player launched its second generation Mix Max phone - the Xiaomi Mi Max 2. At that time, the device only came with one color option which is the gold variant. It was quite disappointing for many customers, especially those who prefer a different shade to their Xiaomi phone. The gold variant wasn’t really everyone’s favorite flavor, thus affected the phone’s appeal to consumers. However, just recently, Xiaomi finally answered the plight of its fans clamoring for a darker shade of color and launched a Matte Black color version of their Mi Max 2.
For now, though, the Matte Black variant is only available in Hong Kong and it cost HKD 1,899 (around RM1045, P12255, or SGD 335). So, unless you have a way to purchase this device all the way from Hong Kong, we’ll have to wait until any further announcement on its Matte Black variant availability in regions outside Hong Kong.
There hasn't been any official announcements about Xiaomi’s plans whether or not this new variant will be made available in other markets or even a global roll-out. However, to date, almost all variants of Xiaomi’s devices have already made its way globally, so it’s not really far-fetched to expect that they’ll be doing the same for the Mi Max 2.
In fact, rumors have already come out with this new variant. It hinted that Xiaomi might bring this new variant globally during its launch in India this July. The possibility is high considering that India is actually one of their biggest markets in Asia.
The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 runs MIUI 8 based on Android 7.0 Nougat. Being a Mix Max device, as expected, it comes with a massive 6.44-inch full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) display screen. On the inside, the Mi Max 2 is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 625 SoC clocked at 2GHz coupled with 4GB of RAM.

Xiaomi released the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 phablet last month in two storage models: 64 GB and 128 GB. Now, a listing of the Mi Max 2’s 32 GB edition surfaced on the popular benchmarking website – GFXBench. This variant of the Xiaoi Mi Max 2 is no different from its previous models that were released last month except for its smaller storage count, of course. This listing could mean that a 32 GB variant of the Mi Max 2 could be released in the near future with chances that Xiaomi will release it first in China.
The Mi Max 2 is the successor to the Xiaomi Mi Max that was introduced last year. It is a phablet with a metallic exterior, sporting a set of three capacitive keys below the screen and a fingerprint scanner found on its back. It packs a whopping 4 GB RAM and a ginormous 5,300 mAh battery, which should be more than enough to power its 6.44-inch full HD screen with a pixel resolution of 1920x1080. On the back of the handset comes a 12 MP camera, while its front sports a 5 MP snapper. The top-of-the-line Android Nougat is integrated into the Mi Max 2 with the Xiaomi’s MIUI 8 Operating System working alongside it. In terms of hardware, the Mi Max 2 is packed with the Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 with 8 cores clocked at 2.0 GHz. Not to mention, its decent graphics is fuelled by the Adreno 506 GPU. In addition, the Mi Max 2 sports a set of functional stereo speakers and a SIM card setup that supports both nano SIM and micro SIM.
As of writing, the Mi Max 2 is available in a Gold edition only, though there are chances that Xiaomi might release a new color variant of this handset once the 32 GB is released. The Mi Max 2’s 64 GB model is now available in shops across South East Asia and is priced around 1060 RM (which converts to 342 SGD, 12413 PHP, 1927 HKD).
Xiaomi Mi Max 2: When Can We Say It’s Too Big?
The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 does things in a big way. It showcases a wide 6.44-inch FullHD display (1080p) paired with a whopping 5,300 mAh battery that is bound to outlast every flagship device and every tablet there is. Apparently, it’s one of the most battery-packed smartphones that exists to date, and basically, that’s the driving factor why consumers love it (aside from its impressive specs, of course). However, has it gone too far…? Or maybe, too big?
This question was inevitable, especially for China’s biggest smartphone brand’s founder, Lei Jun. He stated that the 6.44-inch is the optimum level for one-hand operation with smartphones. For users, the Mi Max 2 may seem like just a few centimeters away from the tablets territory, literally, but it’s such a wonder how a fraction of an inch could make such a difference. It could spell the difference between smartphones and tablets.
Despite this direction, Xiaomi is heading to with their Mi Max series, ever since they stepped into the global market with their budget friendly but powerful smartphones, they have been getting a warm welcome from the consumers. Even the size of the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 didn’t stop the company from getting a lot of love from their consumer.
In fact, Xiaomi Mi Max 2 together with their latest flagship contender the Mi 6, is currently in short supply. The shortage was due to a flash sale that Xiaomi has yet again announced in China for the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 and the Xiaomi Mi 6. It wasn’t really surprising that they immediately ran out of stock for these devices because despite being such powerful flagship devices comparable to Samsung’s and other internationally recognized smartphone brands’ produce, they’re very affordable.
So, when can we say that a smartphone has gone too big? It seems like a 6.44-inch display isn’t a big enough reason for smartphone users to turn their backs on smartphones this size. While it may all boil down to our preference, it cannot be denied that people would gladly sacrifice a little portability for more battery. As long as the device is a performer and cost efficiently, it’s bound to succeed in the market, just like the Xiaomi Mi Max 2!
The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 is already out in shops across South East Asia.
