White* Gentle Measures in the Management and Training of the Young
₱ 134.00
Kobo

Originally published in 1871, this work is a parenting manual by American author Jacob Abbott. He produced many works, most notably his 'Rollo' series, which aimed to instruct young people in moral virtues as well as to keep them entertained. This publication, however, is a non-fiction work that outlines his methods of successful parenting. We are republishing this work with a brand new introductory biography of the author. Here is a short extract from the opening chapter: 'It is not impossible that in the minds of some persons the idea of employing gentle measures in the management and training of children may seem to imply the abandonment of the principle of authority, as the basis of the parental government, and the substitution of some weak and inefficient system of artifice and manoeuvring in its place. To suppose that the object of this work is to aid in effecting such a substitution as that, is entirely to mistake its nature and design. The only government of the parent over the child that is worthy of the name is one of authority-complete, absolute, unquestioned authority. The object of this work is, accordingly, not to show how the gentle methods which will be brought to view can be employed as a substitute for such authority, but how they can be made to aid in establishing and maintaining it.'

Ralph Kingsmill drew a deep breath as he looked around. It seemed life had suddenly brought him all that man could desire. In his waking dreams he had pictured this, never hoping to see it realised. And now it had all come to him in most unexpected fashion. A week before and what had he been? A poor, struggling author, with one or two minor successes to his credit, burning with unsatisfied ambition, strong at one moment, lamentably weak the next; in short, a brilliantly clever man, cursed with the temperament that usually goes with the artistic faculty. He had had his debts and his dissolute companions, he had known a full pocket and a purse so lean that starvation had stared him in the face. The sordid side was the more painful, agonising, because Ralph had known the luxury of a refined home, and was an old public schoolboy.

White* Country Music
₱ 176.00
Kobo

C.w. Smith's award-winning first novel, Thin Men of Haddam, established him as a novelist of power and compassion, and Country Music offers up a shrewd anatomy of sexual and social stances that extends the range and depth of his vision. Country Music opens when Bobby Joe Gilbert, Hedorville's Bane to Virgins and Most Unlikely to Succeed, confronts an unwelcome question: "What are you going to do with yourself?" Desperate to escape his reputation and the limitations of his world, he makes a stab at college, but the effort dissipates in endless games of pinball and a stormy friendship with Polly, a lesbian pinball addict who resists his sexual advances and penetrates his psychic defenses. He weds Ginger, a gorgeous blonde who epitomizes his macho notions of womanhood, but the marriage is doomed by her childishness and his inability to cope with the intricacies of love and sharing. Warily, he returns to Hedorville and to the same-old, same-old crowd - and also to his responsibility for the death of a girl who trusted him, the ugly secret he must face before turning to the future. The women in Bobby Joe's life - Pinball Polly, his wife Ginger, and Nelda Sue, the girl he keeps leaving and keeps coming back to - are deftly created women. They and a host of others bring a world to life, while its creator rings changes on themes of sex, destiny, escape, and the complexity of human entanglements. This new ebook edition also includes an essay by the author about working in Hollywood on the film adaptation. "Smith's portrait of a troubled young man searching for himself he knows not where… is alive, funny, sad, and as real as it can be. Bobby Joe's thrashing around about himself and the way things are is country music in a new key." - Publisher's Weekly.

White* Closer Union: A Letter on South African Union and the Principles of Government
₱ 358.00
Kobo

This early work by Olive Schreiner was originally published in 1909 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Closer Union: A Letter on South African Union and the Principles of Government' is a polemical work in which the author argues for greater rights for blacks and women in South Africa. Olive Emilie Albertina Schreiner was born on 24th March 1855 at the Wesleyan Missionary Society station at Wittebergen in the Eastern Cape, near Herschel in South Africa. In 1880, Olive set sail for the United Kingdom with the goal of taking a position as a trainee nurse at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh in Scotland. Unfortunately ill-health prevented her from studying and she was forced to concede that writing would and could be her only work in life. In 1883, she produced her first published work The Story of an African Farm which she penned under the pseudonym Ralph Iron. This novel details the lives of three characters, first as children and then as adults, and caused significant controversy over its frank portrayal of freethought, feminism, premarital sex, and transvestitism. She became increasingly involved with the politics of the South Africa, leading her to make influential acquaintances such as Cecil John Rhodes, with whom she eventually became disillusioned and wrote a scathing allegory in his honour.

He investigated many 19th century practices and was inspired by their relatively tame side-effects. He believed that manipulation of the muscular skeletal system was the key to alleviating many illnesses, and developed his techniques into what he called Osteopathy (Greek roots osteon- for bone and -pathos for suffering). He promoted his system widely and founded the American School of Osteopathy, the world's first osteopathic school, in Missouri. White* My Religion
₱ 139.00
Kobo

My Religion carries on from where A Confession left off. Describing himself as a former nihilist Tolstoy develops his attack on the church he has left. He accuses them of hiding the true meaning of Jesus which is to be found in the Sermon on the Mount; and most clearly in the call not to resist evil. For Tolstoy it is this command which has been most damaged by ecclesiastical interpretation. Not everyone he writes is able to understand the mysteries of dogmatics homilectics liturgics hermeneutics apologetics; but everyone is able and ought to understand what Christ said to the millions of simple and ignorant people who have lived and are living today. Here is Tolstoys religion; and non-violence is at its heart.A Confession is Tolstoys chronicle of his journey to faith; his account of how he moved from despair to the possibility of living; from unhappy existence to the glow and strength of life. It describes his spiritual and philosophical struggles up until he leaves the Orthodox Church convinced that humans discover truth not by faith but by reason. The story begins when at the age of 50 Tolstoy is in crisis. Having found no peace in art science or philosophy he is attacked by the black dog of despair and considers suicide. His past life is reappraised and found wanting; as slowly light dawns within. As gradually imperceptibly as life had decayed in me until I reached the impossibility of living so gradually I felt the glow and strength of life return to me… I returned to a belief in God. Here is a quest for meaning at the close of the 19th century - a time of social scientific and intellectual turbulence in which old forms were under threat. Tolstoy looks around at both old and new alike and like the author of Ecclesiastes discovers that All is vanity. His spiritual discoveries first take him into the arms of the Orthodox Church; and then force his angry departure from it.

White* The TNT Punch (Waterfront Law; The Waterfront Wallop)
₱ 358.00
Kobo

This early work by Robert E. Howard was originally published in 1931 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'The TNT Punch' is a story in the Sailor Steve Costigan series and is about Costigan in a grudge match to raise money for another boxer's bail. Robert Ervin Howard was born in Peaster, Texas in 1906. During his youth, his family moved between a variety of Texan boomtowns, and Howard - a bookish and somewhat introverted child - was steeped in the violent myths and legends of the Old South. At fifteen Howard began to read the pulp magazines of the day, and to write more seriously. The December 1922 issue of his high school newspaper featured two of his stories, 'Golden Hope Christmas' and 'West is West'. In 1924 he sold his first piece - a short caveman tale titled 'Spear and Fang' - for $16 to the not-yet-famous Weird Tales magazine. Howard's most famous character, Conan the Cimmerian, was a barbarian-turned-King during the Hyborian Age, a mythical period of some 12,000 years ago. Conan featured in seventeen Weird Tales stories between 1933 and 1936 which is why Howard is now regarded as having spawned the 'sword and sorcery' genre. The Conan stories have since been adapted many times, most famously in the series of films starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
