5 Tips on How to Find the Right Smartphone

If you’re looking for a new smartphone, here are some tips that will help narrow your options and figure out exactly what device you want to opt for.

Don’t go over your budget

One of the biggest mistakes before buying a phone is shortlisting devices from favorite brands without thinking first of the budget. Bear in mind, smartphones come at various price points, which go up as devices get more or better features in terms of display, camera, processor, and memory.

Today, the price of flagship phones like the Apple iPhone X ranges from ₱45,000 - ₱60,000. The price threshold for mid-range phones like those from Apple and Samsung is around ₱35,000. Meanwhile, the price of low-end phones is capped at ₱15,000.

Research on the brand's track record

A brand’s track record is as important as phone specs. If you are unsure about how to look at a brand's track record, simply do cursory research on the phones they've developed, as well as how consumers perceive them by checking online reviews. Knowing these things will help you decide which brand offers effective smartphone products.

Don’t only consider the megapixels

If you love taking pictures, you’ll need a phone with impressive cameras. When looking at camera specs, don’t only focus on the megapixels. Keep in mind that the number of megapixels doesn’t equate to better picture quality. Other features like aperture, lens, and ISO are just as important. For instance, if you are in the market for a good camera phone that offers good results in low light, you’ll want something that has at least 12MP camera and an aperture of f/2.0 or lower, such as the Huawei P30 Pro or Google Pixel 3.

Check processing speeds

You’ve likely encountered jargons like Snapdragon, MediaTek, quad-core, octa-core, etc. when scouting for smartphones. If you are well-versed with these terms, you can determine how fast a phone operates just by looking at its processor. But if you are unsure, there’s another way of looking at processing speeds: simply check the phone’s processing speed in GigaHertz (GHz) - the higher the speed value, the faster it operates.

Also, if you do a lot of graphic-intensive mobile gaming or video editing, it’s best to pick up a phone with a faster processor.

Energy-efficient processor = better battery life

If you are the type who likes to do a lot of mobile gaming or video streaming, besides having a long battery life, you’ll need a phone that comes with a fast processor and decent amount of RAM. This is because battery life is dependent on a phone's processor - the more energy-efficient the processor is, the better the battery life.
